You shouldn't give up on your book. Self publish it as a novella and move on to a new book. Having that book under your belt means that when you start promoting your next one, people who are waiting for it to release will buy the first book while they wait on the second one

I get that the feeling of writing a genre that's entirely new to the market, but I think that's the exact reasons why we start writing them - because we want to see and read something different from what's so-called trending

Writing is hard. Being a writer is hard. But I love and respect so much how you’re not giving up on your passion, even if you’re demoralized. I think that if you write something with your heart and you really love it, that story will find its people no matter how you publish it (if it’s trad pub, indie or an online platform like Wattpad). I believe in you and hope project ghost will see the light of day and reach us, in some way, because I really wanna read it.❤

Hey, I’m not sure if this matters much but if you ever decide to publish project.ghost, even as an ebook, I’ll happily pay to read it. The themes you mentioned relate so deeply to me and I think it might even help me through my own shit, if that makes sense. I’ve been following you for a while now and I’m so happy and proud of you for going through this and still thriving after such a heartbreaking experience. You gave me hope for my own writing, and I hope you know that you can and in some ways *have* already changed the world. I hope you’re doing well Ana

And also, totally get you with the marketability of a book. As much as people like to pretend that mere artistry and talent will get you out there in the traditional sense, having a genre that plays into current trends definitely helps, especially when it comes to fantasy. As a historical fiction writer, the struggle is all too real 😭

I totally get your feeling of being “legitimate” as banking on your success in traditional publishing. I feel the exact same way too. I definitely recognize that I push myself to get traditionally published in part to prove my parents wrong. I don’t know if I’ll ever get out of that mindset, but you’re not at all alone in that respect! And oh my god, I would eat up a poetry collection from you! That sounds incredible!

The thing you mentioned at the end of publishing is what I was thinking for a while. Making a collection of novellas sounds amazing! THAT is a perfect way to get project.ghost out there. and the fifth thing you said about how it may not be what's wanted right now is how I feel about my fantasy novel too. Keep your head high, Ana our time is coming.

Hi Ana! I've been watching your channel for a few months now and I just want you to know that you have inspired me (and so many others) to get back into creative writing! Although I only write as a hobby for now, I find your videos so relatable and helpful! It takes a lot of courage to come on a platform and be vulnerable and honest about your querying journey / writing journey. And although things may not seem to go well right now, remember that everything will fall into God's timing. 💖 Don't give up on your dreams. From your sneak peeks, I can tell that you are such an amazing writer and we all are here to support you on your journey! Project Ghost seems like it'll be such a good and heartfelt read; even if it doesn't fall into the "typical" novel marketing. I love books that includes things people can actually RELATE to (as many of my storylines also include topics like that). You don't have to be the next Colleen Hoover and that's what makes you as an author and your story STAND OUT. I would definitely love to read Project Ghost and your other stories someday! 😊

Honestly I would LOVE to read Project Ghost and I think a lot of the younger generation would because of the very traits that make it not marketable through a "formal" agency. I understand the stance of wanting to debut through traditional publishing with a marketable book. That will jumpstart your career and keep you motivated to write BUT I really really hope you self-publish Project Ghost one day, even if it's after your debut. I will gladly wait 😭

hi ana. i just want to take a moment to tell you that you have seriously inspired me to continue my writing journey, as it has been something that I haven't worked on in awhile. i wouldn't consider this querying journey as a failure, but a success because you are learning something from it! this series definitely shown me that querying and trad. publishing is a lot harder than little me imagined, and I can see that it could be very painful, for lack of a better word. to be honest, you could always self-publish project.ghost and build up some sort of portfolio to demonstrate that your marketing and social media presence helps sell. not only that, but you could self-publish each individual novella (if you have multiple, that is), and create a compilation novel of multiple novellas (think of Stephen King's "Different Seasons"), and begin to query that instead. PLEASE DONT GIVE UP ON YOUR BOOK. either way, if you go the trad. publishing route with a collection of novellas in one huge book, or simply self-publish it on Amazon and various other sites, i'll read it. ^^

I totally agree with you about how some books that go into deeper aspects of life aren't as marketable as others in today's age, but whatever you book you write I can guarantee it'll be someone else's favourite book. I honestly think self-publishing is more special and personal, especially with project.ghost, because you have more freedom to market and present it as how it goes into all those deep and meaningful things and why it means so much to you. But don't ever give up on a book because of other's standards, just keep going and writing what you love
@ninanatascha

I so relate to the niche genre problem... I have a book that I absolutely love, but don't think it would be very marketable, especially since it is also very short. My book reminds me of Project Ghost, not in the plot, but in how you talk about its atmosphere and feel. I won't give up on this book completely, but I am now focusing on other projects instead and someday may get back to that book of my heart.

Hey! I'm 90% sure my favorite author who is now pretty dang successful started out self publishing his first book at 16, and then it got picked up by a publishing company after that and they've kept him since! I am pretty typically a fantasy reader exclusively, however, I am definitely ready to snatch up a copy of your book. I've been watching for a couple months while I work on my own book and you are doing so great! I wish you luck with everything ❤

Failure is just experience, and all experience is good because it means you're moving forward. A lot of people wait until theyre much older to start learning and experiencing the things you are now (not that thats bad-- just that its brilliant that you have a headstart). So as long as you dont let it discourage you into quitting, youre doing quite well for yourself. Honestly self publishing is a good idea for this specific project I think. It shows future agents that you put the work in and have people who will buy your work, as well as it being yet another experience to add to your collection AND content for the channel. If you dont want to thats also perfectly fine, but certainly dont view the option as admitting a loss or anything like that. Its all forward movement.

I'm so sorry querying didn't work out for you, Ana. I don't enjoy seeing you so put down and upset, but I love that you are real with your audience. It makes you very relatable. I know that you know that there is the idea of self publishing, which I would love to see vlogs on if you ever decided to go down that route. If I could, I would love to read your novella simply because 1) you are amazing and I support you so much. 2) the mental health scenes you mentioned resonate with me deeply. But I have literally no money. Like at all, it's kind of sad. I don't. But seriously I really want to read it. Actually no I want to read EVERYTHING you wrote. There's also this weird thing going on with novella's where people just don't like them and I seriously don't understand why. I personally love them and wish I had more on my shelf. I'm writing a novella that I also hope to be my first published book someday, and it's in the same category as yours like you said where there's no smut, no tropes that people talk about all the time. It's just a historical fantasy with romance that deals with grief and acceptance. I really hope that things turn out better for you and your beautiful, amazing, wonderful, magestic book

I think for Novella's, it might definitely be worth looking into self-publishing. But I also want to say this; you don't need to prove yourself to anyone, whether that be your family, or fanbase, or whoever. It doesn't matter too much what others think, but rather what you think, because at the end of the day, life is too short to be worrying about others and we should be pursuing what we find joy and happiness in. It's also okay if you choose to not publish your book. I don't think that means you're giving up on it, because to me, giving up on it sounds like it no longer holds a special place in your heart, which doesn't sound like that's true. I can tell the book means a lot to you. And one last thing; lots of successful authors get rejected countless of times before they finally get accepted, so don't feel too discouraged. It does not mean you are a bad writer, and it also doesn't mean that no one will want to read your book. So keep your chin up and your hopes and dreams high; I believe in you :)

I totally respect your choice to move away from querying project ghost. It's okay to be realistic and make decisions that are hard. Just because you're no longer querying it now doesn't mean you can't do something with it in the future. Your stories are wanted somewhere.

don't give up on ghost!! you've inspired me so much, and I finally started writing again because of your content. I feel like I might actually have a chance of having my books read one day (if I can ever finish them) because of your content. I understand the feeling of hopelessness, but there's nothing wrong with self publishing either. you have so much more control over your book that way, and while I do understand the appeal of traditional publishing, it's ok to do indie publishing instead!! we will all support you, and if anything then you can tell your parents you were self made, self published, and earned this money COMPLETELY on your own. you could even self publish a few books, and query the others! I understand being so frustrated though. I've been so overwhelmed with college starting I've barely had a chance to even look at my projects and when I do im extremely overwhelmed. it'll be okay, you got this! we all support and believe in you

I know self publishing might not be for everyone, but just in case you ever self publish a book, know that we all would probably buy it as soon as it is released without another thought! Like, ANA WROTE IT?? CAN WE READ IT? YES, PLEASE! Of all the authors I know and have read, most of them are self published and are really capable of writing and publishing good books. Like, look at Mel Torrefranca. Abbie Emmons. Sarra Cannon. (Just to name a few of my favs!) All of them, and so many more, have a huge and dedicated fanbase even though they are self published! Even tho I don't know much about the others, we know for a fact that Sarra Cannon has sold almost a MILLION copies and, turning my writer instinct off and speaking as a reader, her books are AWESOME! (Also, she's a bestseller!) Don't lose hope. Querying is a long, unlikeable, irritating process. If you really want to go through the traditional publishing route, know that it IS going to hard, and that it is always this way if you don't have real recognisation yet. But once you take off, everything will pay back in the end! All the best :)

I love seeing the real side of your writing journey, including the tough parts. Keep in mind, every bump in the road is just another lesson learned! Don't sweat the querying hiccups. Heck, we all make mistakes and trust me, we learn heaps from them. Just remember, when one door closes, another one opens. And don't sell yourself short as an "authortuber". Building a community like you have, that's a big achievement. You're not just putting words on a page, you're inspiring a whole lot of us! About Project Ghost-kudos for being real with yourself and choosing your own path. Going indie isn't giving up, in my opinion. It's just a different road for sharing your work. All the best on this wild writing journey. :)

Hi Ana, yesterday I saw a video by Emily McCosh here on RU-vid and she published her novellas with the help of Kick Starter :D So maybe that could be a route you could take, if you like for "Project Ghost" and other novellas :) Also when it comes to self publishing, look at Sarah Sutton! She's rocking it and her books are loved! And starting out self publishing doesn't mean you can never query again and get published traditionally. You can always go hybrid :) I think mental health is a really important topic these days so I think your book IS important! And "The Virgin Suicides" was Jeffrey Eugenides' debut novel and that was a tough one! If authors would only write and publish what was in "fashion" many many great and brilliant books wouldn't be on this earth! Maybe for "Project Ghost" the self publishing would be perfect. That way it could be your debut novel after all but in self publishing and with trad pub it would be one your fantasy books. A double debut so to speak :D No matter what you decide to do, I'm excited to read your stories!!!!

Hi Ana, yes, apparently publishers couldn’t make a profit out of a too short book or a too long book, because they’d have to price it too cheap if its flimsy thin with no margin or too expensive to produce if its too thick. They have to adhere to the wordcount according to genre (averaging 90 k ish). So its not personal. Id suggest compiling 2 more stories to make it a book with a few stories (maybe something that have a cohesive theme❤ (I believe in project ghost+your other future projects, you can do this!)

Something I've noticed a lot from authors on X/Twitter is the reason they don't make any sales is 1) they didn't bother to learn marketing and 2) they're always tweeting complaints, and never positive things. Why would I buy a book from an author who's always complaining about how their book hasn't sold? You expect a pity purchase? lol no. The best selling writers aren't the best written, but they are incredibly well marketed.

I somewhat agree. I understand Ana's feelings completely because I feel the same way but it's not even about being a good writer anymore nowadays. I mean...look at Colleen Hoover! I do feel sad about the weird hatred for Novellas though...

I think it’s a bit of a blanket statement to say that the reason a lot of authors aren’t selling is because they’re not bothering to learn marketing strategy. the fact remains that publishers are offering less promo support and it’s valid for writers to feel frustrated about that. it can’t be reduced to authors just not trying hard enough. There are a lot of factors that go into a book selling well, and many writers ARE grinding it out on social media (mostly tiktok bc twitter isn’t the primary marketing platform to impact sales these days) but the algorithm is incredibly fickle. as for writers complaining too much-the vast majority of authors I see who are venting out their frustrations about this industry are not expecting “pity purchases.” (maybe there are exceptions, but it seems uncharitable to assume that widely.) writing is solitary and many ppl just aren’t lucky enough to have support systems irl. most writers are just seeking out community and support from /other/ writers. it takes a lot of courage to be publicly vulnerable about the hard parts of writing, to admit that the journey isn’t perfect, to document their process so intimately as Ana does despite how young she is. and many writers (myself included) appreciate that kind of openness because we’re experiencing the same kinds of frustrations too. it’s good to know I’m not alone in that.

Some people and popular authours to this day have started with seld publishing and if their book is recognized enough by publishing houses then they will take in your books to publish them all and the rest. So go and self publish. Thats what i am going to do, so dont feel that it isnt enough because to say u have written and published a book is already life changing. I feel like project ghost would make a really cute tv show or movie on netflix. Also, never ever ever ever ever ever ever apoligize for a long video my queen.

Hi again 👋❤ please read this... I know that you can still publish your novellas by yourself. Since I know that a lady author name by R. L. Davennor. Has written a good couple of them. I have two of them in my play books library. I heard about her from Facebook, where in the past I was about to help read two of her stories - or three, not sure on the third one Also there is an author RU-vidr name is Emily Mccosh. She is busy with her own novella. So I know that you can still publish your books. Don't give up 😢 Since you have the knowledge to do so. Even if you try to ask any of your followers if they are editor and book designers. You can still follow your dream to be an awesome author.🤗😎 We are here to support you all the way. Just remember that you have 70 000 odd followers that might be ready to buy your books 😁📚

Doubt you’ll see this comment, but near the end of the video when you’re talking about the meaning of what you write and its importance amid the sea of false art, I would encourage yourself not to write for others but for God and for yourself. He will always be pleased with art that glorifies him. He gives purpose to songs unheard. Just a meditation I have regarding my own writing.

Well you know.. it’s always exciting starting a new book:) it’s refreshing, and renewing inside when you start new. I have a lot of unfinished books due to my lack of experience and dedication. But I’m currently writing one that I really enjoy writing and even almost done! Took three years.. but I’m almost there 🫶🏻

Hey ana, fellow writer here. After hearing you describe your book to me, I feel cruel for being a person, if you know what I mean. Embarrassed, for being a part of people, of society that does this to young dreamer writers who only want to see their writing as a physical copy. I only have to say one thing... SELF PUBLISH YOUR BOOK NOW ITSELF I WILL BE THE FIRST PERSON TO BUY IT. IF YOU DON'T I'LL CRY. PLS PUBLISH IT AS SOON AS YOU CAN. IT'S NOT ABOUT PROFESSIONALS. IT'S ABOUT HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE WAITING TO SEE YOUR BOOK RIGHT NOW, ME INCLUDED. YOUR WRITING IS BEAUTIFUL. Trust me and do this. If not for yourself, for me.

If you write, you're a writer. Period. Having a work published doesn't make it more worth of being read.

I rarely comment on your vids but I thought I should say that you still may be traditionally published even if you first get your book out by self-publishing. You’ve got a massive platform (in my opinion) and I think many of them would leap at the opportunity to read your work and if up to 60,000 people go to buy your book at once traditional publishers will turn there heads and may possibly pick up it like I fell in love with hope did 🤍🤍
