I'm playing Gordeau's trials in Under Night In Birth, but I also got something important to say to every person out there who thinks fighting games are hard, they're not good at them, or think they can never improve. I talk about those plus other things such as thoughts on Guilty Gear Strive and preparing for that and also what I look for in a fighting game

The hardest part about fighting games is learning your first game. After that hurdle it’s really easy, you’ve learned a previous title and although their might be some system mechanic the main rules are still there. You pick your character, learn a few ez bnbs/make up some easy but absolute cheeks combos, figure out a game plan for your character, boom hop into games. Run into a problem, training mode it for a few minutes or watch someone else and see how they beat it. Loop the cycle

Really the hardest thing about fighting games (otehr than muscle memory) is re-wiring your brain to understand that the "defeat" screen doesn't mean you lose. Coming from games like LoL and CS its hard to accept little victories like landing a new combo or blocking that mixup, but still not winning the match. I think a lot of people quit early because they see "YOU LOSE" and think they gained nothing or wasted their time.
@Juno4Uno

You gotta hype yourself up about the little things in fighting games I’ll get folded like laundry in real matches but if I blocked a mixup or two I’m practically beaming because my defense is improving even though I lost
@OniLink96
@OniLink96 3 года назад
I mean, even in League, seeing that "Defeat" screen doesn't mean that you wasted your time. What was your KDA? Did you play lane well? Did you make good dragon calls? How are your mechanics? Which mistakes lost the game? Don't play to win, play to improve. That'll get you the wins.

@@OniLink96 I've never really been a fan of people making this distinction between playing to "win" and playing to "improve." I think it's less that fighting games are hard and more that getting good at fighting games is a big time commitment. If you wanna' be able to play at even a mid tier level you gotta' put in the hours. And for some that's a deal breaker. It's only recently that I've started getting over that hurdle.
@guhlump8267
@guhlump8267 3 года назад
While that's true, that's also true for fps's, or moba's or what ever your multiplayer game of choice, if you've never played a shooter before, CoD is pretty hard to play, and take a long time to become a "mid tier player" it is an optics issue. Losing usually feel bad, I think what makes FG's feel notably harder than othing things like FPS's, for example is there are less clear goals that the game encourages the player to strive towards, the game doesn't reward you heavily for anything outside of the flashy win screen, learning to anti air is invaluable in gear, but you sort of have to decide to do it on your own. and if you don't because you get rolled, which is understandable why people give up, most games didn't really give you an explanation to solve those problems.
@vocalcalibration8033

@@guhlump8267 All very true. I think the issue is simply bad teachin tools. While detailed tutorials are startin to become the norm it's a new thing for the genre. I guess more accurately fighting games are a big time commitment and tey don't really teach you how to play them.

People complain about fighting games being hard because they're used to losing a lot! In games like call of duty even if you didn't win the match, you get kills which is a form of winning to most people. In fighting games, you can delete someone's health bar but the satisfaction comes from actually winning a round from your opponent.
@seraphiim444
@seraphiim444 3 года назад
that’s pure perspective, i mean if u look at it differently a good read in a fighting game can give the same satisfaction as a kill in a shooter if you realize you made it and do it on purpose. same can go with any good decisions in the game, it all depends on how u look at it

@@seraphiim444 For a lot of people, there's no instant feedback that the game itself gives you for doing something good, unlike a FPS like CoD or even say Rainbow 6 where you get points for capturing objectives and destroying traps and what not. Fighting Games don't reward the player directly outside of literally winning the match, maybe a round, however winning a round is a means to winning the entire match and the game will gladly say you lost if you did not win the amount of rounds it said to. Getting to the point of *knowing* you made a good read is a long road, and a skill you don't hone in on at the start as it's not part of the core fundamentals. Making a good guess on what your opponent is going to do is more of a secondary skill, not a primary one when you're starting out. And that's not getting into the game *not* rewarding you, that's you being competent enough to not only know that you're doing it but that you did it correctly.

100% true, fighting games aren't necessarily hard but some games just don't "click" with the player. Blazblue is the perfect example for me: I love it, but no matter how much I play it, I cannot figure it out for the life of me. On the other hand, I can stop playing UNI or KOF for months, yet when I go back to them, it all comes back to me near-instantly. Fighting games aren't too dissimilar to instruments in this way: a bass player plays bass, because it clicks.

@metalgeartrusty
@metalgeartrusty 3 года назад
Isnt that what makes things hard? Our ability as humans to “click” with them? If you want to use a word that isnt “hard” feel free, i guess you can use the word accessibility?(as in how ez is it for something to click with a human) your ability to come back to games after a few months is just an indication of your personal ability. I get rusty/ forget my buttons after a week of not playing.
@shiwanmi
@shiwanmi 3 года назад
This is an interesting thought. Is something "clicking" another way to describe talent or natural ability? How can we overcome that hurdle to do well at things we don't inherently "click" with I wonder?
@BiFoxxo
@BiFoxxo 3 года назад
I definitely agree, as someone who didn’t click with SFV’s gameplay, including links, the neutral game, and the system mechanics. While I enjoy games that have slower neutral, like GBVS, I just couldn’t really vibe with SFV, as much as I want to. The instrument analogy is actually pretty smart, IMO, because every instrument is different, and even though some instruments have similarities (such as brass instruments or stringed instruments), they still play very much differently, much like how fighting games may share mechanics yet still play differently and vibe better with certain people.
@hazeventura2768
@hazeventura2768 3 года назад
@@metalgeartrusty Yes and no: take algebra for example. I don't understand it, and never will. In high school, I could not get past grade D in it, that was my ceiling. That doesn't make it hard tho: it simply means that my mind does not possess the tools necessary to do well in it. It's hard for me, and that's it. Fighting games are no different, and I don't think accessibility has anything to do with it. Let's consider the music analogy again: the piano, to me, is not an accessible instrument at all. I find it complicated. Having said that, I've met piano players who do not understand bass - an instrument commonly regarded to be simple and accessible. It all comes back to "clicking" again. I cannot click with Blazblue, but not because it's hard or inaccessible: it just doesn't click. I'd say a lot of the Guilty Gear games are just as difficult and complicated as Blazblue is, but I fare a lot better on GG - because it clicks with me more. I hope this makes sense as this is a very abstract concept I'm attempting to describe here 😃 my point is that you cannot assign hard-labels like "difficult" or "easy" to things that take natural skill. Another example is chess: you either get it or you don't (I certainly don't lol).

Then we had Lord Knight, a pro player who excels in multiple fighting games who made a fighting game tier list and placed BBCF near the top, and now we have this video with yet ANOTHER pro player who plays AND excels at multiple fighting games named KizzieKay saying BlazBlue is his favorite fighting game series. Been with the mainline series for a decade now, and no other fighting game has yet to come close in replicating some of the things this series does. The fact that is arguably the most unique AND complex 2D fighter on the market, but isn't talked about hardly at all in the west was always baffling to me. Especially when I read comments, and watch videos of people in the FGC CONSTANTLY complaining about how boring fighting games have gotten recently, or how easy they have become, and yet will REFUSE to give the game a try. It felt like was literally only mashing (and I honestly don't understand how the game is as big as it is, after trying it, though that may be on me), there was no rhythm to what I was doing, so I didn't have fun. As complicated as Rev 2 sometimes seems, at least I'm having fun trying things out.

These combos are insane (like 20 parts consecutively!) That said I tried doing very simple stuff like this on DoA6 back when it first came out cause each of the characters had a similar move list you could follow through on screen. I think the biggest motivator to practicing is how much one is enjoying the game, and for me that's the characters. Right now I love one character going into Strive, Ramlethal Valentine, which is enough to practice on. But if they're gonna start chopping & changing her due to all the public hate I won't have anyone left...

Its not like Smash Bros where one button does it all but theres like 4 different buttons that do attacks and I’m just like, wow this is hard. Even the movement feels hard to execute like a simple dash requires precise double flicks instead of jerking the stick twice in one direction. I hope to get better at these sorta games. One issue with fighting games is that people don't see the Work that happens behind the scenes. Knowing why you lost a set sounds like it should be easy to figure out but it can be tricky as a beginner. Also the concept of practice and training isn't discussed enough.

The tough part in getting into new fighting games IMO is the knowledge and execution barriers, which can vary depending on the game but in general are always present in a game. Like Street Fighter has barriers in needing to know and be able to do the links and a lot of frame data. Not just the frames for your character but also the opponent's. Tekken is a slew of knowledge barriers with needing frame data but also stuff like even "which direction to sidestep and when, and should I step or walk?" Games also don't structure the means of teaching combos very well, at least not in general. Trials tend to give combos that test for mastery rather than giving players ones that they can apply easily in matches (though I just picked up Uni a couple weeks ago and its tutorials are really well designed in general). SF is pretty easy but even then there are beginner walls like getting stuck in block strings without having any method to punish or on the inverse being if you're against someone like Guile and unable to put up an offense because overheads suck, the can throw out safe normals, and you can't jump due to the ease of being anti-aired. Fighting games often have players thinking, "So I just can't do anything against this?" And there may be solutions or may not be and devs leave it up to the players going into the lab to find them instead of giving advice in either tutorials or just directly. And if you ever want to switch characters you need to completely rework your game plan since stuff like buttons you could use to poke, timing for your anti-air, and the moves you use to punish all change.

I got into fighting games about half a year ago and recently found a discord group where most players are from my region, so now I don't have to worry about lag, esp in Rev 2. Thing is, whenever I match against most of them I get my ass beat every time. Lately I've learned that I should "hold 4 and don't fucking let go until you see an overhead" and practice and memorize different sorts of combos before you try and make some up yourself straight away in a match; to get a feel of the character and understanding what can cancel into what. It's tedious because I'm still in that "hold 4" phase and am having trouble defending against mixups, so right now it's a game of "how long can I block and not get hit"

Maybe I'm noob... But I'm finding Rev2 really hard to pick up coming from Killer Instinct / MvC / 2019 SamSho / SC6 / GranBlue VS. The biggest reason why I find Rev2 so difficult is because there's sooo many universal mechanics that it's really hard for me to pick up on. There's blue burst and gold burst. There's 3 types of RCs (those weren't actually hard to pick up on, specially coming from KI). There's Dead Angle, there's launch combos from Dust (which you'd think would be easy for me to pick up on cause conceptually they're really similar to MvC3 and I's but I do dusts and my fingers go "HUH PRETTY LAUNCH"), Faultless Defense, Blitz Shield, Blitz Attack, and most characters have unique mechanics on top of all the universals........it's just a lot. I feel like when I play Rev2 I'm given a deluxe hamburger and I stupidly only eat the buns because I don't know how to even approach the everything inside cause there's so much, but I got general sense of combos, mixups, approaches, throws, ya know...the generic stuff lol. The most boring part.

Guilty Gear has a lot more mechanics compared to Street Fighter. That said, I can say first hand fighting games have less complex game systems to learn compared to to a game like League of Legends or Rainbow 6 Siege. The hardest part of any and every game and a nessisary part of growing as a player is going from thinking "I need to overcome this mechanical barrier to be good" to "What do I have to do to win. What's my win condition and how do I win it consistently." The mechanical aspect is always the least important part while fundamental concepts like positioning and decision making always matter so much more.

For me, who has played SF since I was younger, learnt how to play DoA and VF at tournament level. I will say one issue is when I go to different games , not accepting that they’re different right away. Can’t find a main. So, I hop on easier FGs so that I may learn at an acceptable pace to fight my other friend or it plays like SF where I can use my skillset. I can’t see myself go through the process of learning and feeling like a noob again because I payed my dues already. Played with the old heads and learnt/now teach others here and there. I know what’s it like to beat up noobs all day and don’t want people to feel that burden when I decide to play outside of my comfort zone. Fundamentals are there to an extent but other times, I feel like the process of transferring my skills isn’t happening at all. That what I know feels useless. Feels like an old dog can’t learn new tricks scenario. Even if things do seem to be going well, I grow bored of the game. Happened with UNI. Was doing ok but got bored.

To me the hardest part of fighting games on a fundamental mechanical level is charge characters. I cant for the life of me figure out how a character archetype designed to be easier for players who can't do complex motions ended up being nothing but a hurdle for everyone Ive ever known play fighting games me included. It breaks my heart for me to see an awesome character, want to put time into learning them, only to find out they are a charge character and I cry as I go back to my shoto bois because they work and make sense. Quarter circles? Child's play. Half circles? Easy. 360s? Yes please. DPs? DPs make me feel safe. The pretzel? That one scares me but I can do it semi consistently. But charges? I never know when Im done charging and either get blown up because they don't come out because I didn't charge enough or I get blown up because I wasted my opportunity charging too much. They suck and I hate them.

To me there are factors that dictate if a fighting game is "hard" - Resources for learning (Tutorials in-game, guides online, lots of people playing it to share tech) - The age of the game (If a game is too old it might be very obtuse, and have less new players and lots of "necros") - The execution barrier (Some games have less reliance on frame perfect inputs, precise windows and overall god-like execution to do the more advanced stuff. Older games usually had engine quirks and glitches/exploits that were hard to do, but now are fully accounted for in newer titles, for example)

Marvel vs Capcom as a series is also pretty close to FighterZ, but there’s not much that exists rn that’s got anything close to 1:1 similarity with FighterZ. Skullgirls is probably gonna treat you better though, plenty accessible with a crazy high skill ceiling. What's hard about fighting game is the learning curve. When you pick a game, you can struggle and then, you get much better, but you fall back into that plateau-like state, and you have to learn more than you did before. Again and again.
