❤️Being a school counselor is one of the most rewarding careers you’ll ever have if you choose this! You get to make a positive impression on so many lives. I talk about two recent experiences that make the long, rough days worthwhile. The best part of my job involves being a role model for my students. I get to help shape their lives and mindsets at this impressionable age.

I'm about to be in 11th grade, Alabama. I've always wanted to be an English teacher, and an author on the side. Last year I got really interested in psychology and considered therapy. This video helped me realize I can stay on my path as an English teacher and help people realize their passions and help their skills through writing.

Watching from Phoenix. Former teacher working on the journey to becoming a counselor. Decided to stick with my professional counseling program and gain experience from the mental health side (most likely school-based therapy) and then if I am missing and eager to get back in the school setting and less about the therapy, then I can always become a school counselor. So, I really appreciated what you said about your experience and the skills gained from your time as a mental health professional. Thank you so much for taking the time to create these videos and sharing your knowledge. You are inspiring!

I've been a teacher's aide, summer school teacher, intervention LTS, and most recently, had my own full contract Kindergarten classroom. I decided not sign a contract for this school year, but have been currently day to day subbing to stay busy. Recently, I've thought about going back to school to become a school counselor. Felt the same way during your "why I left the classroom" section of your video.

This was really informative. You have a wonderful personality and so funny with the intro, especially the students asking to change their schedule, they do do that. I’m a high school teacher now and I got a position as a school counselor, but to be frank I am worried I won’t make a difference as a counselor like I do as a teacher. As a teacher I get to know the students so much more. I also, have had students come in high to school with red eyes and all and have made them focus on school work and come sober and solve problems in their personal lives too. I just worry that as a counselor I’ll be pushing paperwork instead of actually engaging with the students. Do you make a difference? Maybe I can continue teaching in the summer to help out and be a counselor during the year. There are options and I’m grateful, but I just want to make a difference.

Hello! I'm watching from Houston, TX and I am currently a tutor who is thinking about becoming a school counselor in the future. I liked how you clarified that school counselors don't exactly provide therapy but rather short-term counseling sessions to help students. I was wondering if a student had problems with anxiety or depression and needed help long-term, would you refer them to a clinical mental health counselor?

Hi there! I live in Houston too 👋🏾 And awesome! We need more counselors. As a Counselor, I work with students who have anxiety and depression. If they need outside therapy, then we refer them to communities agencies ☺️

Hi, I’m actually thinking about going to school. I’m 26 and I’ve always had a passion for working with kids. My sister was a guidance counselor at my school. But I was fighting with myself on what to major in. I was going to go to a community college and just do psychology and transfer to get my bachelor’s but they say with a bachelor’s degree in psychology it’s hard to find jobs. My main goal is to be a school counselor for sure. So I know I’m going to get my masters but I’m trying to figure out how to juggle school and finding a good paying job with bachelor’s degree for that time being. Never really been interested in teaching just always been more in the counseling part.

You can look into programs with a focus on mental health counseling and work in other agencies instead of schools. Good luck!🍀

School Counseling is a career I am interested in currently. Am I on the right track path? What communication classes are good for school counseling, especially ones that are related to interpersonal or more school leadership focus?

I’m currently going to school to be a school counselor. When I first enrolled at my local community college, my counselor recommended that I choose a major that could apply to a teacher for my bachelor’s degree, so I am an English major. However, you can choose history or math if you wish to instead. I would suggest talking to a counselor, which you need to do after enrolling because they help you with classes for your first semester. After I transfer and graduate, my goal is to get a master’s degree in educational counseling. If you choose to do so, you can also teach with your English degree while pursuing your MA. I have been told that gaining experience as a teacher can help you gain skills to become a better counselor. Plus, teachers will respect you more if you have been in their position before. I don’t know if that last part is true, but that is what I was told by someone who was a teacher. I hope this helps. :) The university that I’m transferring to has options to minor in children’s literature or writing as well, so that might be something to look into if you decide to major in English. I want to add children’s literature after I transfer in January.

hello! i know this video is old, but i have a question that you may know the answer too. it sounded like you said to the cacrep program so i don’t have to go back if i wanted to be a LPC. If i got my masters in school counseling at a CACREP accredited school, i wouldnt have to go back to school if i wanted to be a LPC??

Hi! Only if you complete a bridge program where you get your school counseling certification (degree) and simultaneously complete the courses needed for the LPC (mental health classes). It’s a dual program! Check with universities you’re interested in!
