Many of the common concerns with giving blood - shaky needles, elusive veins -- may be eased in the near future, thanks to the latest robotic and imaging technologies.
VascuLogic, a start-up supported by the NSF Small Business Innovation Research program, is bringing to market a device that aims to make the blood collection process safer and more efficient.
The technology uses infrared and ultrasound imaging to identify veins. A robotically controlled needle is then guided into the targeted vein. The whole system is designed to benefit patients and phlebotomists alike.

Sadly, you can't see it because of the ad for a video about ice in Antarctica. :(

Even though a robot drew the blood, a live person had to be there. I wouldn't want a robot to draw my blood! What if the robot malfunctioned and seriously injured someone?
@jepkofficial
@jepkofficial 4 года назад
What if the human makes a mistake and seriously injures someone?? Statistically, a human will make many more mistakes than a program.

I had nurses digging with needles, like they were trying to scrape the bottom of a crockpot. Needle in, scrape around, needle out, repeat 7+ times till the nurse gives up on that spot and tries a new one. This has happened SEVERAL times to me last year!!! I would love something like this!

People are pointing out all the things they think are problems with this machine. Remember technology only gets better and smaller with time. Soon a robot will be doing this and there will be no need for nurses or doctors. It’s coming faster than you think!

What about those of us whose pressure rises at the sight of the automatic BP readers? My veins would probably curl up and retract into my shoulders.

Yeah you say that as the healthcare system is self explanatory for everyone. I bet a patient with dementia would have no problem sitting still for a robot to docdoagnostics

Sure, fine and dandy, until the system gets hacked. No way I would trust this these days.
@DemetriosMallous90
@DemetriosMallous90 7 лет назад
Stay off the internet then if you're so frightened. Also, this system isn't running over the internet, so unless a "hacker" gains control of the computer, the system can't get "hacked". There's also a technician monitoring the system. You're more likely to get murdered by a horse fly than someone maliciously hacking a monitored device like this.

He didn’t pull the tourniquet when the draw was done. If a person is required to operate and do all the work before and after the venipuncture I see no point in using it except on very difficult draws.

This is silly, the guy is telling the robot where the vein is by looking at the ecography, what's the use? A nurse is probably far cheaper than this. 1 person vs 1 person + a robot
@stuartspence9921
@stuartspence9921 9 лет назад
Alphadan For sure. New technologies should always be commercially viable during every step of their development. Otherwise what's the point of getting half way? They should never have bothered.
@Alphadan
@Alphadan 9 лет назад
Stuart Spence That's not my point, i challenge you to find someone who would be willing to have their blood extracted by a completely autonomic robot, without physician's supervision.

+Alphadan The guy is telling the robot in this video. I would imagine the technology will soon be available where no human supervision or influence is required, and the process will become fully automated. Automated surgery following advancement in machine learning is bound to become achievable, I'd believe within my lifetime. The idea behind robotic assistance is to minimise human error and patient discomfort. It's easy to be a critic. Look at this video for what it is, an amazing demonstration of how technology has the potential to improve healthcare.

If you just wanna do blood test, you don't need this, you need the Theranos method, which takes a very small amount of blood and is painless.
