I just updated my watch to the Garmin s62. I had the Garmin s60 before but a family member really liked it they were constantly asking for yardages so I gave it to them and got the new one. I had a Nikon Coolshot 40 rangefinder before. It was okay but it was no use really to hazards, or if you couldn't see the pin. The watches are so much easier and for those arguing for the preciseness of the laser for flags. Most watches now have a move flag function which then gives you the exact yardage to the flag. No need to worry about if you got the flag or the tree behind. I think the best evidence that the watches convenience is now much greater. I was playing with a friend a few weeks ago. We played 7 rounds in 4 days. He swore by his top of the range laser on the first day. But when it rained (like cats and dogs) and we played a very hilly course the laser was much less use. He kept asking me for the yardage. Last week he called me asking which watch I had and could I check if it had his course home course (Royal Norwich) on it as it's a brand new course. He as since ordered it and played his first round on Sunday with it. His words exactly were "It's so much better than the laser. It's like having a pro caddy on your wrist."

I use a bushnell when in the scoring yardages and Golfshot on my Apple watch for general distances and keeping score. Best of both worlds.

I used to use a hand held range finder but have purchased a Garmin S60 Approach and love it. If you sometimes zigzag your way up a fairway like I do, the range finder can be a bit useless as it requires line of sight to the flag which may be obstructed. This is never a problem with the watch as it has a flag compass arrangement which will give you exact pin direction even when obscured. Each to their own though because I can see benefits of both but as I’m a mid handicap player, centre of green is all I need.

I use the V1 Game app for my iPhone and Apple Watch. I purchased the $20 version which allows me to have the flag distances on my watch and the app knows when I swing the club so I can keep score. The swing feature works well when taking full swings and my watch vibrates to let me know it tracked a swing. I select the club I just used and then go to my ball. When I swing again the watch uses those two swings to track the distance I hit the ball. It doesn't automatically track chipping/ putting shots so I need to enter those manually, but I really like the app. There are more expensive versions that claim to act as a virtual caddy and give additional features, but I have not tried those.

I bought the watch and am quite happy having it. I do understand knowing the distance to the flag is helpful, but as I know I cannot guarantee I would hit the exact distance I feel once I see the flag colour which tells me if it is front, middle or back, then I am happy to know the distance to the middle, front and back of the green to estimate the shot distance to hit. Of course when the golf cart has a gps, that is also great.

Garmin G10...it's a clip on version of their basic watch (I haven't worn a watch since small mobile phones hit the market). You can move the pin on the green and I have found it to be at most 1-2 yards off the yardage my playing partner's range finders are giving -- which is way more accurate than my shot making. Keeping score, fairways hit, putts/GIR stats, and the matching web service are really nice features (I'd like a bit more data collection but that probably means Arccos or the like). Note: if you track your index, Garmin is missing the ability to upload the scorecard into your course's/association's official handicap tracker.

Most average club golfer’s don’t even know how far they can hit their clubs. Or at any rate have a rough idea only. Any of these devices would be of assistance. A golf range finder is also useful at a driving range where you can check the distance to a pin you are targeting. Even the cheap ones are pretty accurate. If your a shooter then it can double up for you for target practice or hunting!

I have tried most things from Lasers to GPS, phones to watches, I have settled on the Garmin S62 watch and CT10 sensors, I found laser range finders too unstable, I have a Garmin G80 I don't use other than as a launch monitor, I still have Arccos sensors boxed back up ready to sell when I get round to it, I have tried various apps on my phone, but the Garmin S62 and CT10 sensors do everything I need, they give me my yardage and track my shots and I wear it as an everyday watch.

Heard rumors that one of the major companies is working on a small GPS position transmitter that fits onto the top of existing flagsticks. They also work on a universal software interface so that the position signal can be picked up by GPS watches, smartphone golf apps and GPS screens on electric trolleys to show the exact pin position on the green. That would be a fantastic feature!

To be honest 95% of golfers aren't good enough to to hit the ball within a yard of the target, meaning GPS is easier, quicker and more than adequate. If I was elite, it would be rangefinder all the way. As I'm crap, GPS is the way forward!

doesnt really make logical sense because if lets say the pin is 149y away and your range finder gives you that exact figure, your average miss is lets say 139y to 159y for the sake of argument. Now if you use a watch and the pin is 149y away the GPS might show you 144 or it might show you 154, which means your miss would be 134y to 164y thus still less accurate.

@@benwilliams2354 I get what you're saying. I use a Garmin GPS and it has never been more than 2 yards out from my buddies Bushnell while also giving me a lot more info/options such as hazards or dragging the marker to where I want and (trying) to hit the ball there all on one screen. The trade off in accuracy for me makes no difference as like I mentioned, I'm nowhere near good enough.

I use also both, laser and watch, and in my opinion watch is very convenient. E.g. Garmin S40 or Apple Watch with Arccos. Very fast and easy to get accurate yardages (or meters in my case). I rarely use or need to use laser, usually only when some really specific obstacle or hazard like water, ditch, bunker etc. which usually watches show too.

I play off 12 and find the watch perfect. I know I'm not good enough to hit the exact yardage everytime. To be honest I have played with a lot of low men, who mess about with lazers to get the exact yardage, then play the shot over the green or short and in the bunker. Point is I think you would have to be nearly pro level to get the best of what the lazer offers

Im in search for one of the 3 now. I keep gravitating towards the handheld gps because I don’t like wearing watches in general so I won’t like the watch. I also can’t see myself picking up the laser every hole to look through it, I know that sounds lazy but I’d rather just pick up the gps take a quick glance and then decide on the club and then hit it

laser is really only useful for the accomplished player. most weekend hackers don't need that kind of accuracy. a reasonably accurate measurement to the center of the green with GPS is more than adequate. also, there is the convenience factor. laser you have to take out of its case and hold it up to your eye for each shot. a GPS unit you just glance at.

What I have found is that people who have the GPS watches (and handhelds) always seem to forget to charge them, rendering them useless. Lasers with replaceable batteries last a couple of seasons. Another option they didn't mention is the relatively inexpensive voice "caddies" that give you a yardage to the hole regardless of where you are on the course, eg. blind shots, two fairways over, (lol) etc. Voice caddies also give you the distance from the tee, which on par 4s and 5s are typically too far to "shoot" with a laser. I use both a laser and a voice caddy to cover everything short of hazard distances.
@ChristopherDowning
@ChristopherDowning 3 года назад
Yes to the charging issue - its a pain - the laser is in the bag and always works for everything. You get pretty good at getting a reading fast and that's it - then if your golf coach nags you as mine did - you can get a back of the green mound or tree, front of the green top of bunker or false front, the actual pin, etc. Easy peasey. Then practice is easy as well - hit a ball - zap it - that's the distance. With a GPS watch like I had it's a walk to the ball - or at the public range that's a no go..

One benefit of the laser rangefinder they overlooked - gps doesn’t do anything for you on the driving range. All the ranges around here are horrible for telling the distance to each flag, or they act like every tee box is the same distance to each flag.
