Watch What Happens When I Put A Mushroom In A Terrarium
I’ve had this terrarium for 6 months and in that time the Millipedes, Woodlice, Springtails and Snails have multiplied and created a vibrant ecosystem. I feed them a variety of vegetables but their favourite seems to be the humble mushroom. In this video I’ll show you what happens when I feed these critters their favourite food.

awesome footage! Did your terrarium grow any mushrooms ever in that area where you dropped the mushroom?
@stephenchurch1784
@stephenchurch1784 Год назад
Short answer: there's no way mushrooms would grow from a single dead fruit placed in substrate. Longer answer: the conditions mushrooms love also makes mold happy. To cultivate mushrooms, you first need to inoculate a pasteurized bag of medium and let the mycelium grow without competition. Once the mycelium is established, you transfer it to a growing substrate to expand and begin producing fruit (the mushrooms that you see above ground). In nature, there are huge mycelium networks putting up millions of fruiting bodies, which each flood the air with spores. By sheer dumb luck, some tiny fraction of those spores manage to inoculate the ground before being eaten by mold. In a system this small, the tiny amount of spores left in the dead mushroom don't stand a chance of surviving

Thanks for taking your time to explain to laymen like me who want to start this green journey. i of course have thousands of questions, but here i narrowing them down to 3, hoping you would have the time to answer them. 1st, can i use rain water to water my Terrarium ? 2nd, occasionally i find some small snail in my own garden, can i use them in my Terrarium ? 3rd, i see that your DIY kit is only available in the UK, will there be a chance, in the near future, that you'll cover Europe as well. It's very difficult to find the right ingredients as suggested by you in Germany . Thanks in advance if you'd have the time to answer my questions. By the way, Your tone of voice has a very calming effect, much like what i feel when i'm looking at your precious Terrariums.
@greenjars_
@greenjars_ Год назад
1. Yes, rainwater can be used in terrariums because it has very little mineral content in it. 2. From what i know, you can use any snails or mocrofauna in terarriums, just make sure they have adequate space and are well fed so they dont end up with deficiencies. Do your research on what the type of snails need. 3. You dont nscessarily need a kit to start terrarium making, you can buy all the ingredients for substrate and drainage on most online retailers and garden stores for fairly cheap, and you can find plants and containers almost anywhere :)

@@AnnasViolets Oh, no need! I can tell you now what they all are. Based on the footage I'm very confident this cleanup crew consists of a fairly standard set, being millipedes, springtails, isopods and snails. Snails obviously are mollusks like you said, but as for the others they're classified as follows: Millipedes are myriapods, springtails are entognaths _(though they are still hexapods),_ and isopods, contrary to popular belief, are actually terrestrial gill-bearing crustaceans that only resemble insects superficially in appearance. Hope this was all a bit informative! Invertebrates can be very captivating. ^^

@rudzulten3659
@rudzulten3659 3 месяца назад
It would make me so happy, as you said there are some spores and also some mycelium in the body of the mushroom, the mycelium of the fungi could technically grow but it would take time and there would be the risk of elimination by the existing fungi and the lack of nutrients for a weaker fungi

@greenjars_
@greenjars_ Год назад
Insects and mocrofauna are usually bought as cultures, and placing them in setups like this allows them to breed and make more. I also believe the snails came about in this terrarium unexpectedly, so sometimes they can arrive in soil or other random ways :)
@brikozub
@brikozub Год назад
There are some microfauna that lay eggs that remain dormant while dry, as well. You might scoop some dry dirt from your yard into your jar and when you water the terrarium, it begins the process of the eggs hatching.

@greenjars_

The soil is observed, and when it starts to appear dry it is sprayed down with filtered water so it has the consistency of a wrung out sponge. Terrariums need very infrequent watering, its all about observing the soil. He does also have an acrylic lid over the top which helps keep the humidity at a good level :)
