As a two time national champion I can't begin to tell you how valuable this experience was for my career. SkillsUSA is for high school AND college and it's not just trade work. If you are going to school ask your administrator if they participate and if not change schools. It will change your life.

This is cool and very needed in todays world! I wish I would have had this when I was in high school! 38 years this year as a general contractor…. I learned on the job! This would have been such a head start!

Wisconsin SkillsUSA state officer for three years 1999-2001 right as they transition from VICA to SkillsUSA. We were preaching the trades then and warning just what the the developing push of 4 year degrees would have on the trades and it came true. So happy to see you highlight this program as it's been out there for decades helping fill those roles. Schools needs support to host these organizations, if you own trade focused business contact you area's high schools and get involved, if the program isn't in place in your district, help them get it started.

I went to a regional skillsUSA competition back in 07 for webpage design. Back before html5. It was a blast to see all the other skills competitions there. One of my friends was there for construction and had to build a shed that was up to code.

Matt, as you being a huge influence on me in the direction I choose to go in during life as me being a previous flooring installer and now homeowner with a passion of working towards increasing quality and performance and one day hopefully to be a GC myself, I am soooo happy to see you involved with Skills USA. Although a different industry, I myself was a participant at Skills USA. I competed two years in a row, my second year placed 3rd in state in collision repair and refinishing for the state of Illinois. I was so proud of my accomplishment during that time and continued on to school on a partial scholarship offered to me after that competition. I wish I had been more interested in the building trades back then. But it was a great time and accomplishment regardless, there’s so much opportunity given to the youth through that experience! I could not be happier to hear that someone of your stature and skill is getting involved and spreading the word!

Matt thank you for promoting the trades to young folk! I'm 33 and 3 years into owning my own general contracting and custom home building company. One thing I wish someone had impressed upon me early on, is that business skills are as crucial as any trade knowledge that one can acquire. Any young folks reading this please look up Matt's videos on the business end! Whether you have a desire to start your own business, or if you prefer to work for someone else, an understanding of basic business, law, and accounting principals is crucial to advancing your career! It's not as much fun but it'll pay off for you.

Very happy to see you highlight SkilssUSA. I have been a subscriber of yours for about a year in preparation of building a lake home in northern Wisconsin. My son's high school team actually took the Gold Medal in the Teamworks competition you showed. I am a very proud father. Once I get the plans finalized and permits lined up, he is going to be helping me build that cabin using a lot of what i learned from your channel. We are both very excited. Thanks again!!

Those in Carpentry school, if you continue on to college, there's construction management degrees or Architectural Engineering with a CM minor. Keep your tools through college. The Property Brothers flipped houses during college. You get your education and you can develop houses & commercial projects.

That is great, we definitely need that here where I am in KY, already seeing a shortage of electricians, and starting to also see a shortage all around building, wish I had had that in high school, I jumped in 8 years ago and just learned on the job, fast forward and now I am doing GC work. Love your Channel Matt, trying to up the quality of my builds and you definitely help.

Matt, what would you advise for older workers who have only worked in office settings but are looking to switch to trades? Is there a site where you can see which ones you'd be best suited for, etc, and the best way to learn, community college, trade schools, etc.? Thanks.

As a general contractor I would try and get a job with a contractor. We need people and will train you! There is a huge labor shortage in the trades! Just go for it!

Just apply no shame of being old, just go with an open mind and dnt let your pride get in the way because there might be a younger man/women teaching you ..

Every home builder and sub contractor should make more of an effort to hire interns, high school and college students, for the summer. Help the next generation in your community. Most will not stick with it after school but the one that do will get the benefit of learning on the job. Every company wants an experienced employee that can do the job alone. They miss out on training their next employee. The idea of a "helper" has disappeared. One man crews don't train the next generation.

Our country needed these trade schools at all levels, instead democrats defunded & shut them down in the late 80s - early 90s. Sadly, we are too late and face many generations lacking the most basic skill sets.

I was there in the High schools, in the mid to late 80s as a master electrician tearing out welding training shops, for instance and then installing rows of apple computers. Well guess what, everyone went into computers from grade school on up and not the trades.

Good luck. The skilled trades are over, Young ones don't want to work or learn a trade. Everyone wants a soft job if they take a job at all.

Because trades don't pay as well anymore. Outside of mechanical and electrical. I gave up painting after 15 years for 14 bucks an hour in the late 00s to go make six figures working in IT. The country doesn't respect tradesmen and the fly by night contractors don't either.

Welding pipe, pipefitting in oil refineries pays pretty good. Pretty easy to make 100-200k a year.

Mainly because we don't expose them to these trades so they know the opportunity and those that choose to not don't appreciate the skill and effort it takes to do those trades. I don't think it's because youth don't want to work, its that they aren't shown the satisfaction that comes from work.

I was in The Carpenter's Union For Nearly 30 years ! From What the men said; If your " Lucky " you might keep working. Even More So if you want to be Higher then a Journeyman Carpenter ! If you Display Excellent or Even Well Paced work, then you'll be Noticed by the workers And the " Higher-Ups " [ the foreman, General Foreman, and ' Super Intendent ' ] . Which by the way Isn't always good ! One Super once said of me; " D..m if That kid had 1/2 a Chance He'd make a Better Super Intendent then I am ! I was Laid-off at the end of the week ! Also if you go to the Library and Look up any Government Issued Books on Labor you'll find that the " Biggest Turn Over " ( Hire them And Fire them )( Or just Lay them Off ), is in the Construction Trades which are only 2nd to Culinary ! Do your Research,. Find what pays the best AND that you [ are apt for ] Like ! " If you Can " find a College That's Not an Indoctrination Mill / Where you can Actually Learn something and you have found Sound Advice Take That Course ! Even if in Construction you Might do good If the Lay of the Land Permits it ! Structural Engineering is Better / If any thing is being Built ! If I could do it all Over Again I would go into High Tech Electronics !
