From some reason, I thought it'd be a great idea to watch all of Precure and make a video about every series. It's official: I'm a no-life nerd.
Note the video quality for the show in question is DVD. The video was rendered and uploaded in HD only for the little bits that aren't the show.

You can't compare Futari Wa Precure to Cardcaptor Sakura because the first precure series is meant for a satire to all the traditional magical girls anime. That's why they only have one magical attack and mostly use hand-to-hand combat during the battle. Unlike the other magical girls animes, the less magic item you used, the more stronger you are in precure's lore. Though I highly disagree about your opinions in Futari Wa Precure, but I'm glad someone did review the first ever precure while some other reviewer mostly review the more recent precure series. I'm not a fan of the magical girls anime but I love the older precure series due to the over-the-top action and simple slice of life story. I do love Heartcatch precure, but that's the only one who can top with Futari Wa Precure and the sequel. The other precure series which is either range from just good to.....painful to watch *cough* Happiness Charge Precure *cough*.

@@conradojavier7547 yeah, it actually was meant to be a "Shonen for girls". The producer was asked to make a show for little girls by Toei. He didn't have a clue of how to make a show for little girls, so while he was watching Kamer Raider, he wanted to create an exact same thing, but for little girls. He said that when he was young, he used to see how a lot of girls used to excel at sports over boys, so the producer made Futari Wa Pretty Cure based on the slogan "Even girls want to rampage"

I really want to do this!!! I’m only a few episodes into Futari wa, and I’ve seen a few other magical girl shows - Sailor Moon, Madoka Magica, Princess Tutu, and Shugo Chara specifically - and have really come to adore the genre. I really want to get into Pretty Cure. From the episodes I’ve seen, it’s pretty by-the-book, but the slice of life is fun and I don’t hate Nagisa and Honoka at all. Really, it’s just a fun Saturday morning cartoon to put on when I feel bored. I’m watching Panty and Stocking and Assassination Classroom right now too, and there are so many other shows I want to start but more than 3 at a time seems too much. Basically, Pretty Cure seems worth my time, but at the moment, it’s a side thing; Assassination Classroom is too freaking hilarious. Perhaps one day I will truly be able to say that I’ve seen every episode and movie of every Pretty Cure series, but I’ll probably be out of college by the time that happens. (And I’ve got a couple years of high school to go.)

Well, I haven't watched a lot of magical girl shows other than Sailor Moon, and I have to say that the transition from Sailor Moon show's style to that of Pretty Cure is very pleasing. The fights are more intriguing and dynamic, and the magic attack is not a ballet shooting a spiral of hearts. And the male love interest doesn't take a big screentime and importance in the plot

Cardcaptor Sakura It is a parade of characters wearing their paraphilias and romantic deviations making us believe that there is "magic" behind all that. Futari wa precure is about girls figthing Lovecraftian entities in postapocaliptic scenarios by bare knuckles. There is not point of comparation

I don't quite understand your problem with their finisher. I mean, maybe it's because I'm used to watching Tokusatsu, or just monster of the week shows in general, but I don't see the problem with the hero's finishing move being the same (or a handful of different ones, but still "resolving the encounter the same way"). As you said, the animation and some of the back and forth in the fights is entertaining in their own right, I don't get why just the finishing move would ruin it so much. The fact Futari Wa's finishing moves are so uninspired and repetitive is more of a problem to me than the formula they are inserted in. I agree with most of your other criticism, especially about the boring villains and everything to do with Fujippi's pointlesness and pretty much being Nagisa's character developement anchor. The crush stuff is so pointless and weirdly done that I have to wonder if the sole reason his character keeps being brought back and reinforced as the object of Nagisa's affection is an attempt to not make Nagisa and Honoka look too much like a couple themselves. Because holy shit they do. I also don't mind the fairies, but I won't argue they are annoying.

Yeah, I admit to being completely inexperienced when it comes to tokusatsu. The finisher was cool the first few times, but seeing the exact same thing over and over and over had me going "yeah i get it," and left me wanting something different/more. I've gotten more used to the whole finishing move thing as I've moved through the series; I guess it was a matter of expectations. Also thanks for all these comments man, glad to know someone's getting something out of all these videos.

I totally understand not liking it. It's just that I grew accostumed to that kind of rehashing I think. And yeah, I'm watching it. Found your channel through your recent Symphogear video, and noticed you had a series on Precure. Always nice to see someone biting the bullet and watching from the first instead of just watching Heartcatch and being done with it like so many. While most of the series have problems and the first few are probably not the best, there are some pretty good and overlooked shows along the way. Though I usually recommend either Yes! Precure 5 (which was my first precure show) or whatever the currently airing one is as the first experience, then going back to watch the whole thing instead of working their way up because of how dated Futari wa feels.

Hmm most magical girls always use the same move over and over again. But I am guessing he wants them to be a bit creative with their finishing move. Like how goku using his kamahameha or Naruto's rasengan. . Its kind of the same move but using it in a nice creative way. All we are seeing is them doing the same move. Until we reach max heart when they can actually split their attack so it can hit their mark. I think that was max heart episode 31.

In fact, I think the producer stated that he was kinda forced to introduce a male interest for Nagisa, so he added Fuji-pi, but (as you well said, and the most of the people would have noticed) he wasn't added to have a very real purpose. I think Honoka and Nagisa are really meant to give some lesbian hints, since the same lesbian hints were displayed in the directly next installment with Saki and Mai (I even remember an episode where Saki compared Mai to an star and Mai got flushed and said "That was kinda romantic"). In Futari Wa Pretty Cure Splash Star it also appeared the inconclusive and pointless male crush for the protagonist, Saki

I agree with a lot of your view points on Futari wa Pretty Cure. Only thing I can say it's the first season so you can't be too harsh on it. (Not saying you were harsh on it.) But I will admit something about the first season can be draining to watch. But the first season has it's own cute charm that not many other magical girl anime had for it's time. It broke boundaries with a major audience and a younger demographic. I will say one thing you did not mention in your review was the music. The music is okay-ish in the first season but the music really shines I think when it comes to the vocal tracks during important moments in the show. Sadly I watched Pretty Cure out of order. With Go! Princess, Fresh, and now Futari wa Pretty cure. But I'm gonna watch your reviews in order. You make fair points and im glad to you decided to review all pretty cure seasons. I was thinking about reviewing the series but im not cut out to make youtube videos lol. (Too Shy) And as for me I'm gonna watch the Pretty Cure series in my own weird order of what I feel lol. (Since I already messed up the order lol) But so far I love the Pretty Cure series and I can't wait till you get to go Go! Princess and watch your other reviews. Hopefully you will give Sailor Moon a try after Pretty Cure?

@@explorer_123 Cruchyroll is known for shady business practices and they talked down to fans during the 15th anniversary movie. Not to mention they left Futari wa in low quality for years because they obviously didn't care about it. My options on them have changed over the years.

The OG Pretty Cure was an intentional destruction of some classic magical girl tropes, which opened up the world to male-oriented magical girl shows. Future Pretty Cure shows added elements from classic magical girl shows like more magical attacks really to soften the ton of the show since it still primarily aims at young girls, but the OG, well they are intentionally limited to one main magical attack that does not even work well without weakening the opponent first. The director of OG Pretty Cure was the guy directed Dragon Ball Z for crying out loud. The original first season really should split into two seasons, with the first 26 episodes being one and the remaining 23 being another. The show's original order was 26 episodes long, only to be extended to 49 after it proved its worth as a male-oriented show and attracted a following mid-season. As of Nanoha you mentioned? Well that show wouldn't be there without OG Pretty Cure proved that guys will watch Magical Girls if given the adrenaline rush of close quarters combat.

The Subtitle of the Original Precure sounds like a Japanese Word of "Dick Girls"(Futanari).

I wouldn't call it a male-oriented show just because it has tough fights. The producer intentionally said that it was a show inspired by Shonen, yes, but delivered to little girls (but he was clearly aware that it could attract both girls and boys and both kids and adults)

@@thetailsspeed5397 Maybe the better working would be “gateway”. Precure itself appeals to both young girls (the traditional audience of magical girls) and adult males (a new demographic for magical girls back in 2004.) While Toei played it safe retaining compatibility with young girls, it proved the critical and financial viability of a magical girl show intended for a male audience. Then we have Lyrical Nanoha coming out in 2H 2004 that went full force with the adult male audience. Nanoha has historical baggage preventing it from ever being a young girl show at all, being a spin-off of Triangle Heart 3 which is an R-18 game. Then we have the critical success of Madoka Magica, a magical show fundamentally unsuitable for kids, now opening the genre up to a much wider adult audience, breaking it out of the girl show ghetto.

I have to agree with some of the other comments. I think you were a bit too harsh on Futari Wa and comparing to Cardcaptor Sakura isn't a good way to explain your thoughts. For what Futari Wa was at it's time, it was great. Good action, characters, and story. There's an actual romance that at least ends in a confession in Max Heart. Anything after Max Heart until Fresh doesn't really do the romance as well or it's just non existent and horrible to watch. Futari Wa was supposed to end after 24 episodes. Then, it was popular enough to get 50-ish episodes and that was popular enough to get a sequel season. In other words, Futari Wa past the first 24 episodes was unplanned. So, any faults along the way were also unplanned. Which is why I'm more forgiving of it. I still think you brought up a few good points. But, I'd appreciate if you did just a bit of background research before diving into anything. Especially regarding Pretty Cure. That way you won't be as frustrated by things that are commonly done in the series or shows like it

I have to say, the romance stuff in PreCure 5 was done well with what they were working with. Of course they can never commit to anything in a kids show, but considering that they even had a kiss scene in the movie (even if it was to break the mind control) was more than I ever expected and is in principle a confession as well.

@@Modie I mean yeah there was definitely romance in Y5 but Coco is older by Nozomi by a few years at least. So it makes the romance awkward to watch from a moral standpoint in some aspects. Also I don't like the idea of kissing someone like that to free them of mind control. It just feels like it sends the wrong idea. Considering again. It's Nozomi and Coco. A hug probably would have gotten the same idea across without feeling as weird imo.

@@sakaki_chrono I mean, that's probably one of the reasons why they couldn't fully commit to it. Though, that goes for a lot of other romances in the series as well, especially the ones between girls which are only ever hinted at, but never go through. Personally for me, it didn't feel that weird, because it wasn't just a random person, but they hung out together for such a long time that I didn't have a problem on a moral standpoint. For me, at some point I just looked at the characters, not the age. This is not to say that one should replicate in RL though. But as a fictional series, I didn't mind it that much (and I personally also feel that people get way too upset at certain relationships in fiction anyway). As for the second part. Again, for me personally, it worked fine. Because from the beginning, we always saw Nozomi imagining to go for a more romantic relationship, but never having the courage to do so. Therefore, her actually going for the kiss was at lest satisfying with what the series was able to do. Would a hug have been enough? Probably, but this was not just about breaking the mind control, but also Nozomi finally doing what she always imagined to do (if I remember correctly, the whole movie was also about them being more or less on a date in that kingdom). At the end, I don't think anyone will ever watch PreCure for their romance plotlines, because everyone knows they can't/won't really go through with any of them. But I thought, PreCure 5 with them actually going as far as they were going was a nice addition that set it apart a bit more, because if I remember correctly, only few series ever had a real love interest in the first place (some of the girls liked the look of a boy, but most of these plot points never develop into anything even remotely romantic, though it's been a while since I watched PreCure tbh).

I seem to be the only PreCure fan who's not fond of how HeartCatch looks. I love the Canadian Dub of the first series, it's great. 'Big Fuck You Laser" is what I'm gonna call that attack all the time now. The best of thing about PreCure is that it knows it's secretly actually a Yuri franchise. Fortunately most future season don't try to force a Het love interest into it. I've had trouble getting into Cardcaptor Sakura.

More and more people seem to be returning to the OG series. There has been a slight surge of Honoka x Kiriya AMVs (I accidentally chose a good time to upload mine) and not a single Nagisa x Fuji one, that sure is telling. Maybe, just maybe it's got something to do with the fact that one pair in a few episodes went through more development than another did in two whole seasons.

I attempted to watch Futari wa Precure a couple years ago, and almost dropped it after only 5 episodes. The only reason I didn't is because I thought that might have been a bit harsh and gave it a 2nd chance, only to drop for good at episode 15- most I could possibly tolerate. Reasons I dropped it include: those goddamn mepos were ungodly annoying (verbal tick, high octave voices, dialogue mostly consisting of whining and complaining or exposition), the girls' powers only work when they're together and yet spent a lot of time apart and thus frequently caught off-guard when a villain would attack (you'd think they'd try to stick together so they can transform at a moment's notice), the villains knew their identities and yet barely made any strategic use of that info, the first villain had a stupid name (Pissard, seriously?), whenever their monsters were defeated the villains wouldn't follow it up- they just left (though to be fair, that's a recurring issue of the franchise), it was kind of pathetic that these top villains were being so routinely defeated even back when the girls barely knew how to use their powers- kind of makes the "top generals" look weak when they can't even beat a couple greenhorns. In contrast, I gave Cardcaptor Sakura 30 episodes before I dropped it. And even though I did drop it, I can still cite a number of things I liked from it. While it did improve over the episodes I watched and I didn't doubt it would continue to improve, it was also pretty slow in quite grabbing me and was not getting better quickly enough for my liking.

To be fair, Precure is different in design to most anime series. Most series, while having a weekly episode, still follow a certain narrative. Precure is one of those "monster of the week" shows which are basically designed to run for a long time with one episode per week. Because even if you miss an episode you usually don't miss much of the plot and therefore you can just watch the next one without feeling left out. Couple this with the fact that Precure first aired during a time where streaming wasn't really a thing and it becomes clear why the show is structured in the way it is. Of course, this also means that if you want to binge watch it today, it can get boring pretty fast. That's not to say your reason for disliking it is wrong. But I think one aspect that a lot of people forget when evaluating a show is the time period. And I think it's especially clear with Precure.

I had a similar feeling as you after I finished this season, but it wasn’t until the second half that I felt that it was truly taking the nosedive for me. Starting after the Dark King was defeated for the first time, the show went into a stagnation for me, mainly because of the numerous slice-of-life plots in almost every episode that were barely connected to any other part of the story, and the wasted potential of the three villains that looked like they were going to have some sort of backstory and motivation, but it just never happened.

you might not like sailor moon. it has more characters and they do have more to them than a single character trait (usually) but the fight scenes are pretty repititive though the monsters and villains are quite varied. it does tend to have villains who aren't simply motivated by EVIL.

I have started watching Sailor Moon since this video, and I do like it, but I'm not as in love with it as everyone else seems to be. It has a lot of charm born from its age and characters packed with personality, so points for that.

Also abot that fight scene. Before that fight scene they call each other using surnames, mean they are still not really friends with each other as the speech is still formal. After that they started calling each other using given names, means they are now actual friends that can be casual with each other.

Sorry for being VERY late for this comment as I just got this video and watched them. I think I can answer some of the your problems with the repetitive scenes and what not. While part of the reason is because of Precure being a animated girl version of Tokusatsu series, another reason is because Futari wa Precure was supposed to air for 24 episodes, but because of the series popularity it is then extend to 49 and a sequel.

Pretty Cure has the Fairies as their conceit. Card Captor Sakura has the Clow cards, Sailor Moon has the maguffin of the series trope. Most magical girl/Tokusatsu end with a final attack, It's started with Ultraman with his beam weapon finishing the monster. New Tokusatsu shows like Garo, try to mix things up (He has a time limit to using his Garo form). Pretty Cure has evolved, but it still uses the final attack option.

So I finished Futari wa Precure today and my thoughts on it are basically what you expressed in this video. I liked it to some extent, but compared to Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura, it’s mediocre as hell. A couple things that really bugged me: Literally everything with Fujipi, the repetition, the CG queen, fucking Porun, basically the “plot” and villains... yeah basically most of the show. I didn’t mind these things too much, except Porun, who’s just a brat. I want to continue with Precure, but I’m unsure of what to do next. 1. Watch Max Heart (Go in order like you are) 2. Skip to Heartcatch (Out of order by MAL score and how much I want to watch it) 3. Watch Ojamajo Doremi (Another long magical girl show before diving back into Precure) I’m leaning towards option three right now. Yeah, I’ll probably do that. And other anime too still. Oh and by the way I’ve been keeping up with HuGtto Precure and it’s definitely better than Futari wa in terms of... well basically everything, but especially the characters. Hana is a great lead and Lulu’s arc is pretty great.

Yeah this is actually a lie because they don't always finish with the marble twister and it doesn't always work so please watch EVERY episode before judging Edit: the other attacks were the precure rainbow therapy and precure rainbow storm and may I remind you that this was made in 2004 you're just trying to make the show look bad so if you hate the show so much don't watch the other precures

Going back to Sakura constantly is comparing to an outlier; should have varied it up. On the other hand, you're not wrong with the points you make. Futari was possibly the worst slog in the entire continuum because outside of fisticuffs (which, if you look, recycled a lot of character layer cels) their only ability is Marble Screw. Great review man 👍. I feel that you're too biased by Cardcaptor Sakura (I don't blame you, when I pass to another pretty cure installment, I'm also a bit afraid of not liking it because I got used to the previous series' style). Luckily, I came from watching Sailor Moon which has the same negative features you criticized, but to the tenth power. And, instead, Pretty Cure's finisher is a lot cooler and fights are a lot more intriguing. It kinda missed for me that you comment episodes like the 42nd or the final season episodes that were added a lot of spice

I’m going to make my own precure fan series. Yes, I am a goanimator. It’s fucking rare for a goanimator to make a decent series, but it will be done in FlipaClip and medibang paint. Yes, I will trace the transformation and attack scenes, but it will mostly not be recycled. I will make new attack scenes and take everything you said into account. Let’s hope my fan series will do pretty well. After I finish my series, please review it.

I wonder what he's going to say about sailor moon because literally every battle in the later season of it she finishes the bad guy off with the same move. I didn't really care about that so I probably enjoyed the series more but I think nagisa and honoka are really mnice main characters.

Crunchyroll has the first season (last I checked), but the quality is potato. The rest of the series...well, you are on your own for that.

Thanks for this review!! I love PreCure but I'm sorry, I dont like Futari wa, maybe it was okay when it was airing, at that time, but nowadays its just soo boring.. Nagisa is soo meeh.. Although I loved Honoka, she didnt had much focus.. And I dont think the fights were all that good, HeartCatch, GoPri, Yes 5 GoGo and even Suite had better fights. The fairies were terrible! Its my least fave season and I feel bad for that cause it is the first season, the one that made PreCure exist XD I still respect this season for that.

the one thing I hate HapCha season is the cure on other world but the rest is OK the fight scene on HapCha is great unlike kirakira and mahou HapCha is best that's all..

Futari wa was the ONLY GOOD ENGLISH DUB IT still FAILED as one in Canada add in the CRAPPY Smile and Doki Doki ENGLISH dubs and Precure will NEVER get any more ENGLISH dubs so far 17 seasons of Precure are NOT in English dubbed and they NEVER WILL.

But CCS doesn't fight like DBZ !!!! I kinda think that was a major selling point of Precure that was overlooked .... lol ... Also it's first party Toei Franchise Merchandise Fodder (Like Super Sentai and Kamen rider) , of course it's going to have recycled stock transformations and finishers.
