I kind of liked the villains in Max Heart. The whole “wholesome evil family” dynamic was quite endearing to me and what kept me motivated to finish this series.
I just finished Max Heart and honestly liked it more than season one. Some things still bugged me and around episode 27 I just started questioning why I was even watching the show at all. But the last four episodes.. man, I did not expect to get so emotional (though I would also have preferred it if Hikari was gone forever). Oh yeah speaking of her I actually really like the three heroines, probably because of how much time is spent with them, but heck even some recurring side characters got some good character. Porun is still Porun and Lulun is somehow even more annoying but Nagisa, Honoka, and Hikari are great. Probably just haven’t got over the high of the finale but though it was too long and had lots of filler that was sometimes good and sometimes had me checking the runtime to guess when the baddies would show up, but when it decided to do plot stuff it was actually pretty good. It’s Futari wa Precure but with Heart to the Max (what am I even doing) Anyway I’m going to take a break and then watch Heartcatch, then Go! Princess, and then go back to Splash Star. Thank you for listening to my TEDtalk
I’m honestly beginning to think I am the only person on earth who likes the “futari wa” version of the opening song waaaay better than the “max heart” version :’(
I like the Futari Wa version better for the series but I do think that the way the Max Heart version is mixed would make it great for special occasions. Like, it would feel more special and impactful imo if it were just in the last episodes and/or maybe the movies. But yeah overall I’d rather listen to the Futari Wa version.
Honestly, I just thought the Max Heart version sounded very unnecessary. It's just the original theme but with "Max Heart" added in it. In my opinion, the theme isn't that special and it feels like it's disguising itself to be a better version of the first theme. Same with the Marble Screw thing too. The precure didn't need to say "Max" at the end of their Marble Screw attack just to show that it was extra powerful...
"Friendship is mmmph... awesome" I see what you did there... not sure why, but I see what you did. I get a feeling you don't like the "For the Evulz" trope at all. I get it, villainous backstories are hooks, but there's nothing wrong with having a villain that just wants to be evil for the sake of being evil. I personally think that the evil is better presented when there isn't some dark or tragic past. It lets you get a better sense of the character's actions, and it doesn't get distracted with the villain being a Woobie or being out for revenge. Take Johan Liebert from Monster for example. We don't get a backstory on why he's an Magnificent Bastard of an evil psychopath, but we do get what he did as a kid. He's simply being evil for the heck of it, and I feel like this aspect made him a much better villain than most villains there are now a days. I don't know... I guess everyone's different. I just like "Simple Villains" more than "Complex Villains" I guess.
Complex villains are less cathartic cause you end up empathizing with them, while evil for the sake of evil lets one enjoy violence without any particular moral hangups. It's the reason villains like Hannibal Lecter are so beloved, he lets us live the worst in us from the safe distance of a screen. After the movie, we can return being our generally well intentioned selves.
Funny how the team said this about Kiriya: "we'll be able to meet again someday, right?" "Of course" - he wasn't even mentioned in season 2 so why tease the viewers with such lines and him possibly being resurected?! His only appearance in the franchise after that was in merchandise as part of the PreCure boy idol groups. Here you can see him alongside Wolfrun, Julio, and Close. pbs.twimg.com/media/DCXDioLV0AADSkS.jpg In no way does this give us any kind of closure on his and Honoka's story but it's SOME kind of attention towards a forgotten character.
Excellent review. I've been meaning to get into PreCure lately. It will probably be on my to- do list to finish after Guilty Crown and Snow White with the Red Hair before the spring season starts up. Not to mention, finishing Shugo Chara (however long that may take)
That's quite a plate you have there. Lemme know when you get around to Precure & what you think. Out of curiosity, where do you plan to start? The rest of the Internet would probably say to go for Heartcatch, and I half-wished...eh, quarter-wished I followed that advice.
I started with Futari Wa Precure, and it turned out to be my favorite of the lot. (I've watched all seasons now.) But then, I seem not to follow along with the usual internet favorites. I did enjoy Heartcatch, but I loved Happiness Charge just as much. Honoka & Nagisa are my favorites, but Erica and Hime are also right up there. As is Milky Rose, who is hated by many. The ones seasons that I didn't enjoy as much were Splash Star and Go Princess Precure. I think the reason the situation with Fujipi and Nagisa didn't go anywhere is because its only purpose was to prove that the girls were, indeed, interested in boys and this could interfere with their relationship with each other. Building that relationship was the part of Futari wa that I found the most interesting. It was echoed a little in Heartcatch, in Yes GoGo with Milky Rose, and in Happiness Charge. But otherwise, the relationship between the girls was in general smooth sailing, making it not as interesting to me.
I'm really surprised you found Max Heart to be an improvement over the original. Honestly, I think they took everything bad about the first series and amplified it. More bland villains, less interesting character dynamics, and an even more repetitive story. Glad you managed to enjoy it well enough, though. Off to check out your Splash Star vid. Splash turned out, shockingly, to be one of my favorite seasons, so I look forward to seeing what you think of it.
That video description is so on point, I feel you didn't even need to bother making the video itself. That sentence just sums it all up. Max Heart is easily the most forgettable season. It is literally Futari Wa again and that is good sometimes, but doesn't do much to make the season stand out on it's own. Might as well also comment about something I adressed in the previous video's comment: stock footage finishing moves. Yeah... They are not going anywhere, as you probably realized already in the following 2 shows you watched. They get more interesting and varied, some later seasons have really cool looking attack, but your complaints about Shiny Luminous' attacks being long and reused all the time will remain true.
Excellent. Tbh now I'm thinking of watching ep1 and 15 of the first precure. Then watch part of this series skipping the movies besides the fight scenes
Once I was done with Futari Wa I was so happy because I was so bored xD Then, I tried to watch Max Heart and just couldn’t finish it because I just couldn’t sit through the same show but with one extra person. Luminous cannot fight, she’s just there to be there, to look good. At least she accomplished that much. Edit - I like Sailor Moon, but it is soooo much more boring than Precure, its just honestly sad the amazing manga was turned into repetitive episodes. Also, Pollun may be annoying but Chibiusa is so annoying I want to throw her out the window. Sailor Moon’s battles are always done in three ways. 1. Sailor Moon’s attack at the time 2. Tuxedo Mask says some dumb quote after throwing a rose, then Sailor Moon uses her attack Or 3. The other Sailor Guardians come, are useless and get taken out after one punch (like Sailor Moon) and then something happens, giving Sailor Moon a chance to use her attack. Sailor Moon is wayyyy more boring then any Precure Season. Seriously, 100+ episodes on Sailor Moon defeating this big bad evil then WOAH! Another big bad evil comes, they defeat it and ANOTHER BIG BAD EVIL APPEARS and they have to defeat it! And each big bad evil want the same thing. World domination or are evil just to be evil. I used to be a super big Sailor Moon fan but after discovering Precure I think I just realized Precure is much more fun to watch than any season of Sailor Moon.
鉱山「Mina Chaan」 Yeah I second your opinion on Sailor Moon. The manga is great but the 90’s anime is... meh. Out of curiosity, what did you think about Sailor Moon Crystal (if you watched it)?
Ethereal Sky Daddy I honestly went with what everyone else thought before watching it (hating it bc its not the 90s version like a jerk) but after I saw Season 3 I learned the theme song and loved it. The animation was super cute and the villains weren’t as random and pointless. I also love the way season 3 resumed the already made plot but introduced everyone at the arcade, their classic meeting place. Overall Crystal is definitely better than the 90s whirlwind of random crap :)
I kinda agree with you. manga potential was great but wasted, although its still a good anime, may not borning but its getting more faster. but honestly Sailor Moon villains are much better than precure ones.
so basically, unless you're into Luminous or is in need of some nice action scenes to clip for an AMV or whatnot, there's no point in watching this series :P man I love Hikari's civilian form, wish they had better merch of her in that form :X
Any way I could contact you? I'm gathering multiple opinions on an idea for a Futari Wa Precure series, and I was hoping I could get your input since you know more about Futari Wa Precure specifically.
Where'd you find the movies? I've finished watching just about every episode available episode and want to move on to the films, but can't find the non-crossover older movies.
I think your script could have used a little more drafting, the order you said things in and the semi-repitition in which you said them kind of hurt the video's quality.
