I think Jake is being too harsh on Furiosa for just having the problems inherent in being a prequel, but I'm so glad he's come around to Fury Road being a masterpiece! I totally understand Nadia having that perspective because of watching Furiosa and I like that she appreciates what Furiosa did great as a movie and really focussing on Furiosa as a character.

The film is surely called "Mad Max" for branding but I think he and Furiosa are dual protagonists. Max's arc and choices affect the plot as much as Furiosa's, as he goes from being entirely survival-driven to making the choice to capture the Citadel for Furiosa and company. Also, I think Fury Road is the second coming of Christ.
@Haldered
@Haldered 3 месяца назад
Agreed, but I totally understand why a first time viewer would latch onto Furiosa as a protagonist more since she essentially has the hero's journey arc. Whereas if you're used to the character of Max from the previous films, you'd be more likely to view him as co-lead. His arc is essentially the reverse of his arc in the original Mad Max. I love the opening of Fury Road so much for establishing Max so quickly and effectively as a character. "A man reduced to a single instinct: Survive"
@SchulzEricT
@SchulzEricT 3 месяца назад
@@Haldered I mean, the thing is that the series is an anthology of sorts with Madthew Maximus at the center, hence the title convention. While Furiosa gets the arc in Fury Road, the next Mad Max movie will have Mad Max in it again, with a new character centered. It's the murder hobo trope, right?

I feel like Jake really miss on his take of Furiosa's character development. Calling Furiosa didn't change through out the movie until Fury Road is weird because she does change in Furiosa. Her entire struggle in Furiosa is finding revenge or finding her personal hope. Like the very last moment is literally Dementus talked out loud her vengeance will bring her nothing but pain, and gladly let her embrace that pain just like him. But in the very final narration part, the history man told us about Furiosa used her own vengeance to build hope for women who suffer the same fate as her. I also think he suffer from expecting Fury Road 2.0 than seeing it as its own film that slowly lead to her next arc in Mad Max: Fury Road. Furiosa to me is kinda similar to the very first Mad Max, except the ending, where Max really gone mad with the world around him, Furiosa chooses to stay sane in post-apocalyptic world to hope for a better future. Would be cool if you guys watch other mad max movies, too.

Furiosa tattooing the map to her home on the arm she eventually loses is great symbolism and adds so much to her character without the need for dialogue. It's what prequels should do, add meaning and subtext to things you didn't know was there and never knew you wanted.
@justadude8845
@justadude8845 3 месяца назад
See, the thing I didn't like about Furiosa's development is that the whole "vengeance turns into hope " thing was literally only said in the final narration . For a franchise that is known for "show, don't tell", the fact that Furiosa's arc was just stated in one phrase at the end really bummed me out. Why not have a scene with her and the wives interacting after she gets her revenge to show that "Oh, there's more to Furiosa other than hate and vengeance, Dementor man was wrong". But to each his own, I guess. Still really liked the movie.
@stvltiloqvent
@stvltiloqvent 3 месяца назад
@@justadude8845the final shot is literally of Furiosa smuggling the wives into the truck. How is that not showing rather than telling??
@justadude8845
@justadude8845 2 месяца назад
@@stvltiloqvent that just felt like a prequel thing of filling in the blanks when you didn't need to. I already know that they were smuggled, what I wanted to see was the interaction beforehand between Furiosa and the wives. Idk, I just felt like the revenge plot and the saving the wives part felt really disconnected and was only glued together by that narration line at the end.

It's funny watching this argument between husband and wife, because these two films were made by a husband and wife. I feel like Fury Road has a very masculine approach to storytelling, in that you're going to make this incredible machine of storytelling to tell an incredibly simple story. And Furiosa has a feminine approach in my opinion, because it is more patient. It wants to spend more time with characters and emphasize the emotional context that drives their actions.

I definitely felt the thunder of every shot and the impact of every bullet in Furiosa. I thought the shot composition and direction created some really visceral, adrenaline inducing moments. I constantly feared for Furiosa, despite knowing she'd make it through. The visuals and the sound direction had me on the edge of my seat in several of the action sequences. Anya portrayed Furiosa with a great, captivating intensity and that alone carried her story for me, despite some of the character development perhaps not being super tight towards the end. Excited to rewatch Fury Road in the wake of this and I'm honestly not sure which one I'll end up preferring.

A point to be considered, Furiosa the movie is about Dementus. In the way the Mad Max movies are always more about the world around him than they are about him, Furiosa is about the wasteland and what it does to people, and like Max was the avenue through which we saw the story unfold, so is Furiosa. She wasn't supposed to have much of an arc, Dementus had the arc, going from ambitious and capable warlord in his prime to despised, outsmarted and defeated old man.

I think fury road is one of those things where it requires a second viewing to really figure it out and appreciate the ways it stands out. Impeccable pacing and a granular attention to detail are the sorts of thing that washes over one when experiencing something for the first time, but stick out more and more upon revisitation. What makes Fury Road so great to rewatch is just how breakneck it is, there's never a sense of a moment being wasted.

When I listened to the Furiosa review and you said "Some people talk about it like its the second coming of Christ" my instinct reply was "Because it is" and because I remember I started loving that movie only after I rewatched it, I kind of expected you to go "I get it now" after rewatching. Something about Fury Road really makes you appreciate it way more after rewatching it because you get to appreciate all of the little stuff more, and the movie is full of it.

My friend had a similar reaction. We went to see Furiosa together. He hadn’t seen Fury Road yet. He loved Furiosa and said it was almost a perfect movie to him, and he was super excited to watch Fury Road, so I expected him to absolutely love Fury Road. But I was surprised to hear that he didn’t like it as much once he had watched it. To him I think it was because of the story and villain. He really liked the story in Furiosa, and he really liked Dementus as a villain. I also really loved Furiosa. I haven’t rewatched Fury Road yet, so I need to watch it again. But yeah, I thought the CGI was a little too noticeable sometimes in Furiosa, especially early on in the movie. There were a few green screen shots where the compositing looked pretty bad to me. I definitely think the movie got better as it went, both the story and the visuals. I think the first act was the only part that felt a little too slow to me. It felt like the story was a little aimless for a bit until after Furiosa escaped Rectus. I feel like everything after that time jump was excellent, when she’s a little older and working in the citadel. The story really picked up, and I was totally invested in the rest of the movie. I thought it ended almost perfectly, and that great ending really helped me love the movie a lot more.

im with nadia on furiosa's development in the prequel. yes, she's always been badass, but that's not enough to emotionally survive. she has to grow from an angel of death to a potential saviour, because revenge doesn't make her whole

I wish in 2015 we had the whole Mad Max Franchise blow out the way there was the Matrix blow out. The Furiosa Anime, connected game, comic books. I think the disconnect and wobbly Canon makes movie to movie to game story review and comparisons tricky.

I didn't think Fury Road would be so divisive. lmao No wonder the Blu Ray and 4k have gone up in price. EDIT: having seen more of this video, I think this is basically the same situation as Mad Max (very first film) and Road Warrior (second Mad Max film)--if you watch the Road Warrior first, you will most likely not like Mad Max as much. And if you watch Mad Max, you may not enjoy Road Warrior as much, while still seeing they're both good films. As another video stated, All of the Mad Max films are very different, and can actually be classified as different films. One is explotation film of the 70s, another is more of a western, Fury Road is a heist/car chase film, Furiosa is more of an action/origin/character study. This is a big reason (I think) for Miller's success. Unlike other directors who keep making the same film over and over, Miller doesn't make the same film twice. And I love that he has the flexibility while still keeping his Miller magic.

I currently agree with Nadia, however I do trust Jake and other reviewers who hold Fury Road is significantly higher regard so I wouldn't be surprised if my long term view changes. For now I've only seen Furiosa one time (first experience in this rich mythical world) and then Mad Max Fury Road one time. Furiosa to me was a grittier movie with a better villain, more variety in the set pieces, and just overall really fun to watch. Fury Road came off as repetitive and boring. I do think warboy Nux was my favorite character in Fury Road and for how generally action-packed Fury Road was, it did have a good story to it. I want to rewatch both.

I agree with Jake, Furiosa was pretty cool but the whole time I was watching it, I was like "this makes me miss watching Fury Road". I can't articulate it as well as you guys, but for me Fury road was one of the sickest action movies with little dialogue, which is why I fell in love with it. Furiosa's character feels like the same character the whole movie (rough and tough badass type). While in Fury road I feel like I saw the softer sides of the same badass, it felt like a character with more depth. Idk basically I think everything this movie tries, Fury road did a bit better, I was more invested watching it.

Saying that Furiosa was made “intentionally weaker” in Fury Road is just missing the forest for the trees. There are many scenes where she is shown to be better than jack at fighting or shooting or driving. And even if she didn’t need his help in every single situation, part of the movie is about trusting others and relying on your relationships to survive the dangers of the wasteland. It’s not about who’s more badass or who is more of a protagonist. They have equal roles in Fury Road and their journeys are meant to mirror each others.

Jake seems to really be holding onto his bias about prequels generally which paints his view of Furiosa, and his overall view of her arc in the prequel makes me question if he was paying attention to the film. Her being a badass is character trait, but not her emotional arc. Furiosa, in whole, is a revenge film, and what she comes to learn by the end through her climactic conversation with Dementus is that revenge is not worth it in the world of Max Max. It won't bring anyone back. You have to hold onto that grief, as Dementus has. BUT, that doesn't mean you have to become a villain like Dementus has. Thus, she uses his body for good, to quite literally grow a tree from as a symbol of rebirth and growth. Fury Road is *purely* about her journey back to the Green Place. THAT's the arc in Fury Road. Entirely different. Also, yes Jake, Furiosa's relationship with the wives was most definitely made clear in the prequel in the lead-up to hiding them in the War Rig in Fury Road. They take her in when she's taken by Immortan Joe, spends so much time with them and comes to care for and relate with them.

Been really interesting seeing you guys talk about these two movies from different angles! I just saw Furiosa a few days ago and I did like it, thought it was cool to see more worldbuilding and loved Dementus' character, but I think I agree more with what Jake is saying about it, I didn't feel that it concludes without Fury Road, since she sets out to go to the Green Place at the beginning of Fury Road, essentially. The revenge plot with Furiosa and Dementus I think could've been more honed in on and perfected, it did feel a little disconnected starting from when she moves to the Citadel, and I guess the prequel could've made it clearer that her desire to go home would be fulfilled in the next film (which a lot of people knew, but those starting with Furiosa would obviously rightfully think that she goes home at the end of it). I'm not sure I agree with Nadia that Furiosa went back to the Citadel to plant the Dementus tree (?) with the purpose of supporting the community there, either, I mean all they show us is the tree planted in her secret spot atop the Citadel, and then her smuggling the brides into the Rig, so I'm not sure she ever had an interest in supporting the Citadel or its denizens. And on the topic of the brides, there seems to be a disconnect regarding Furiosa's motivation to bring them along, too - in Fury Road, Miss Giddy tells Joe that the brides begged Furiosa to take them, implying that she was pretty self-driven up until the events of Fury Road, whereas in the prequel, she seemingly offers them to come along and offers them the promise of a better life by showing them the fruit from the Dementus tree? Again, thank you guys for the videos on these two films, really enjoyed hearing your conversation and it actually changed my own perception of these movies too. Definitely looking forward to the next Mad Max film if they're able to make it!

As someone who watched MM:FR for the first time a week before going into the Furiosa screening: I agree with Jake in that the prequel is not as good, but I disagree that Furiosa showed no growth. Furiosa was in an everyman-for-himself revenge mode in the prequel. By the end of the film, she decides to move past the revenge being her sole motive and help the wives escape instead. Fury Road is all about community building and allyship, which is the result of the GROWTH that Furiosa experienced in the prequel. Without her transformation in the prequel, she never would've taken that path in Fury Road. Still not a well paced prequel though.

for me, it is just as simple as fury road is such a tight, simple, perfect film that is stunning to watch while furiosa is a bit of a slog without much emotional grip. she almost escapes with jack but that's short lived, and she gets revenge but it is pretty empty. both great films, but i have to prefer the one with great pacing that hits all its marks over the one that is a little long and slow in parts, perhaps aims higher, but falls short. (also, super annoyed the mom didn't just end the lady in the tent with her slingshot. it could have all been avoided! and i know there's no movie then, but that is an example of what makes it weaker, imo. another example is why have furiosa and jack even go to the bullet farm? why not just escape at that point).

We all wish we could go back in time to better times when things get rough, but that is not how the world works. Of course, it is a disappointment to see that the Green Place no longer exists, but that is just because we cannot go back in time, we can only move forward and try to make our "now" better for our future. IMO Furiosa is amazing and makes the world feel a lot bigger, vibrant and complex, and it makes Fury Road better by making it the big climax of an epic tale, and yet, being a big no nonsense climax makes Fury Road a more satisfying film. Love them both

Also, I feel like the whole takeaway is that Furiosa IS The Green Place. It's cheesy to say but it's all about BEING THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD 🌎. Some things, NO ONE can take away from you because it's WHO YOU ARE & WHO YOU ARE MEANT TO BECOME. It's all about changing perspective. That's part of why Nux being WITNESSED at the end is soo powerful. That's why Furiosa's main line is REMEMBER ME. She's saying WITNESS ME, but with a whole other context.

Jake's reaction to Nadia's score hahahaha. From what I understand Miller already had Furiosa's whole backstory in mind and told Charlize that during the making of Furiosa. So I guess Nadia's expectation of there being more cohesion between the portrayal of Furiosa in both movies is fair. It's not like all the stuff in Furiosa is retroactive story telling, her arc was already mapped out pre-Fury Road. Heck a lot of the world building and characters in Furiosa were already seen in the video game from 2013.

I think a big difference is whether you felt the emotional journey in Furiosa or not, how much you relate to her, and whether the acting by Anya Taylor-Joy and that other young actress really vibed with you or not. I don't need to see Furiosa do something or say something in particular to really feel like I'm on that emotional journey with her, seeing her experience all that she experiences was enough and like I said the good acting by both actresses really helped. I also think Dementus provides a foil to Furiosa's character, both experienced great trauma but processed it differently and ended up as different people in the end. Just my thoughts as a guy who saw Fury Road a long time ago before Furiosa, and actually prefers Furiosa but both movies are 5/5 for me.

it's funny, i agree with jake in the sense that i don't think prequels are a great fit for the world of mad max. the world feels richer when things are left unexplained and generally i don't see much reason for getting into the weeds of backstory. however, i really enjoyed furiosa on its own merits and might even like it more than fury road, exactly because it offers a richer connective tissue for the characters that goes beyond balls-to-the-wall action. the action definitely isn't as good but there's a lot furiosa offers that fury road doesn't. it reminds me of MI:rogue nation and MI:fallout. the latter is definitely more beloved for its insane action but to me rogue nation is the much more impressive movie, connecting emotional and character beats with great action perfectly.

In short, everyone's mad for Mad Max, and no one's furious for Furiosa.

Yeah, Fury Road is one of my favorite movies. Its amazing in its depiction of its world, similar to Berserk, aka probably one of the best stories ever created. You should really check it out! It's a lot of fun?!

I think Furiosa could have been designed as a stand alone piece, but as it stands, what betrays its lack of confidence for that to be the case are all the "flash forwards" to Fury Road at the end of the movie. Furiosa was awesome in its departure from the more focused scope of Fury Road, expanding the understanding of how this wasteland actually "functions", and even adding depth to the previously more one-dimensional villains, but with that (for better or worse) comes a discernible amount of fat (probably about 30 min worth) relative to the taught assembly of Fury Road.

I watched it in the right order but I'm still on woman's train. I thought max in fury road felt redundant. There was no story and it was just a big car chase scene. Its cool. But its not much more than that to mee. about the lore dump aspect. I thought that fury road lacked lore so I was happy to get more of it. But even then I wanted more lore after seeing furiosa

Funny, because I agree with Nadia about the CGI in Furiosa elevating the experience. Let's be honest, Fury Road also had a lot of CGI, but I think Furiosa used CGI to elevate the scale of the stunts/action scenes, and also allowed the scene to stay in frame longer. There are SO MANY long shots in Furiosa, whereas Fury Road opted for more sharp cuts to deliver it's action style. All in all I think Fury Road is the slightly better action movie, simply because it's breakneck pacing, but I honestly like both films about equal. Because Furiosa does things incredibly well that Fury Road barely even attempted (Fury Road has no "real" villain to struggle against)

I must say, I liked Fury Road more for production value, I still remember watching behind scene video with stunts, people acrobaticking on moving cars etc It's a beautiful movie with cool visuals (flaming guitarist fuck-yeah!) and tom hardy's grunts, and it was funny and brutal... So why did Nadia not like it? XD

I always thought the guitar guy was sending out orders to the other cars through music, which I always thought was super badass & clever, but I could totally be wrong.

I like the confusion about it being a "Mad Max" film. A lot of people were annoyed about the change when it came out. Thankfully the pre-mordial "anti woke" crowd was drowned out by the praise of the movie

I really respect Nadia's take here, I hadn't previously considered how these movies compare to each other if you watch Furiosa WITHOUT having already seen Fury Road. And although I love Charlize's portrayal, I wholeheartedly agree that I preferred Anya Taylor-Joy's portrayal. (Not that we have to compare two queens, they are both brilliant)

The "Mad" in Mad Max isn't about anger, it's about the madness, or insanity, that the world was lead to from a gas crisis. In the first film he quits his job on the road because he doesn't want to become one of the road crazies.

Fury Road is the greatest action film ever made, completely spellbinding and nearly flawless in its execution. It's also a covert feminist film in that it hijacks the action genre (the same way Furiosa hijacks the war rig) to smuggle its themes to a predominantly male audience. Furiosa is a decent companion piece with many rough edges. It quite obviously didn't receive the same amount of planning and care, the same masterful editing and not nearly as tight of a script. The music is another tell. Where Fury Road's soaring soundtrack is perfectly synced to the action almost like a music video, the centerpiece action scene in Furiosa (the rig being attacked by gliders) had only low-level drumbeats in the background the entire time. The title character in both films is deceptive because Fury Road is more Furiosa's story and Furiosa, while it stars her, is actually more about filling in lore gaps that Fury Road left. Furiosa is a great character, but the franchise will always be Max's. He's the ultimate avatar of the wasteland, embodying madness and the will to survive.

I think Furiosa is meant to be watched back to back with Fury Road as one movie. I don't think Furiosa is as good as Fury Road, but I think it manages to elevate Fury Road a little bit

I agree with Nadia, watching Fury Road after Furiosa is kinda disappointinting, Fury Road was a masterpiece in my mind for 9 years, but Furiosa is operating on a much higher level in terms of action and character, so when I rewatched Fury Road right after Furiosa, it lacked that oopmf that Furiosa has and was disappointed.

I thought both movies were great and neither of you are wrong in your opinions. My only disappointment was Miller’s decision in including all the clips of Fury Road over the closing credits of Furiosa. Furiosa leaves you wanting to jump right into Fury Road but then all those clips just ruin the anticipation of doing so. Also spoils a lot for people who have never seen Fury Road. Again, strange film making decision.

13:59 he says it’s implied in the screenplay. First off I hate when people talk about the screenplay without reading it. Read a screenplay before you say something is implied in the screenplay. You would know if you did two seconds of research that there way not a screenplay for Fury Road. I’m not trying to criticize I just think that’s a funny how they argue about this and I’m on his side but even if wouldn’t say that her story is implied in the screenplay. It’s implied in the story and Theron’s performance. The screenplay is non existent and even if it was, as an avid screenplay reader myself, the screenplay many times ends up being completely different from the final film in terms of tone. Love the video just want to add my thoughts
