There’s a tradition in Peter Pan adaptations that the same actor usually plays both Mr. Darling and Captain Hook. The same guy did it in the original play, the same voice actor did it in the Disney movie and here Jason Isaacs does it again! It’s a nice trick to represent how the grumpy father that disapproves children imagination can be seen by them as the Big Bad Guy.
Jason Isaacs had an interesting interview about how the father and hook are one in the same because the story of peter pan represents adolescence in girls. So it is kind of a play on that trope.
The chant "I DO BELIEVE IN FARIES, I DO I DO" is a running joke in my house that never stopped because my sister watched this movie non-stop for 6 months
This movie's score was done by James Newton Howard who did many more for so many iconic movies like: " Dinosaur", "The Hunger Games", "The Sixth Sense" and "King Kong"
This is probably one of the best Peter Pan movies ever (besides Disney and Hook). I really enjoyed Rachel and Jeremy's (Wendy and Peter) chemistry on screen. I like how they made Captain Hook somewhat intimidating. I'm also glad they made the Lost Boys not too obnoxious. I can say overall, this is a very serious film, which gave justice to the book. And that's a good thing. This movie is severely and strangely underrated...
@@MoviesinDepth It came out at the WORST possible time, being set against both Harry Potter AND Return of the King, which caused it to get buried at the box office. A shame, because it is probably the BEST adaptation of the classic tale.
My favorite fun fact about this movie is that the chemistry between Rachel and Jeremy (Wendy and Peter) was 100% authentic. I think that's what makes their scenes together so endearing, because you can feel how much they truly like each other.
As a literary fan you come across different communities and according to the Peter Pan enthusiasts (yes, that's a thing) this is pretty much the definitive adaptation of the story. Yeah, they did change a couple of things but they nailed everything they did perfectly and expanded the story in areas that didn't contradict the original story.
In my oppinion this movie did the best job adapting the original book. Things are added in but there is so much more backstory and time taken to really bring the book to life. It's my favorite movie.
This movie and this tale holds such a big place in my heart ever since i was a kid. The legend of Peter Pan, his adventures with Wendy, John, Michael and the Lost Boys. Peter is a wonderful young hero- although in a melancholy way tragic. Great reaction and video!
If you want a full on dark Peter Pan, you should check out season 2 (I think) of Once Upon a Time, he's exactly that and I love how the actor portrays him. Every fairytale character in this series is really well written (though imo its starts going downhill after season 3-ish, but that's just my personal opinion). It's still watchable after that, but I feel like from season 5 on they retconned so much of their own plot points and character growth, I couldn't bring myself to watch the last season.
@@xwinwinwinx I just checked and you're right, I was confusing it with season 2, because Wendy appears in the second last episode of season 2 and Peter's bestie in the last episode. Peter first appears in the 1st episode of season 3 (epic reveal imo :D).
Jason Isaacs was such a good actor in this movie! Also the timeframe for this movie was supposed to be the early 1900's in London, women and young girls were expected to act very trim and proper. It wasn't considered ladylike or appropriate for girls around 13 to play with her brothers. She also mentions wanting to be a novelist which was seen more as a man's profession unless women wrote poetry. They also married young, the youngest I believe being 12. Fun fact: the ship was made TO SCALE on a set so all the scenes filmed on deck including Peter and Hook fighting while flying was filmed on it. Although the zoomed out scenes of the ship sailing are CGI.
The whole “dad is the same actor as Captain Hook” thing has been in every Peter Pan adaptation/spinoff I’ve seen that included both characters. And in extension of what you said it seems to be saying something about the kids’ perception and I love it. 🥺 I’d say it def inspired the writers of Jumanji.
It took me a really long time to figure it out, but I actually feel sorry for the parrot. Yes, he's annoying, but when birds look like that (missing feathers) it's usually because they've ripped them out themselves. From stress. That poor bird is probably extremely mistreated and it shows. Peter Pan has always been my favorite Disney story. And this version I will never get tired of watching. It's just beautiful in every way. Thanks for doing this commentary!
@@MoviesinDepth This movie is how I got introduced to Peter Pan and the famous story and characters by J. M. Barrie when I was a kid. I couldn’t ask for a better introduction. I love the music in this film too.
I was almost 14 yo when I watched this movie, and it struck hard. Touched a lot of sensible fibers about growing up and leaving childhood behind. I love it.
I know this is an old video, but at like 5:05, Mrs Darling is talking about how Mr Darling sacrifices things that he wants for others as an act of bravery. It can be read as a throwaway line, but I can’t help but connect it later to Peter. He loves Wendy with all his heart but can’t bring himself to give up the one thing he loves most, being a kid, and in a way in creates a sort of parallel. Or, you know, maybe I’m reading too much into a twenty-year old kids movie 😂
I love this movie so much. Along side Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan is one of my very favorite stories. Have you seen the mini series that Syfy did called "Neverland"? It's a really good origin of Peter pan. Also if you want to go dark, Once Upon a Time went down that route when doing neverland. It's honestly one of the best arcs on that show and the one who played Peter is so good in the role.
Yessssss! I love Jeremy Sumpter's Peter Pan, but NOTHING will ever beat Robbie Kay's performance in Once Upon A Time. He did amazing with the darker aspects of Peter Pan, and I go back to rewatch that season all the time.
I was just about to comment this but yes once upon a time’s version of Peter Pan is probably my favorite because how it taps into the darker aspects of the Peter Pan character and tbh that’s when the show got good like 10/10
Hard to believe it will be 20 years old this year. This is underrated and in light of the new movie coming out, this film deserves even more attention.
If you want dark Pan then the Once Upon a Time version will be up your alley. He’s actually the villain of the arc, and his backstory makes him very much unsympathetic.
I LOOOVE this movie! Also 💯 yes on the stylized cgi and all the deeper themes. And 💯 on Jason Isaacs 😍 I am also a huge Peter Pan fan, Hook is my all time favorite, with this one probably coming in second? Of course the old classic Disney cartoon is great too. If you are a reader at all I highly recommend the book that was made off the original screen play, it is very sweet and also kinda dark in a couple places, closest probably to this version of the movie but with other details that didn’t quite make it into any of the films.
This movie will forever hold special place in my heart cause I'm pretty sure Peter's actor (Jeremy Sumpter) was my first character/celebrity crush, or at least oldest one I remember
If you love the story of Peter Pan, I’m curious if you’ve seen either the OUAT version of Peter or any of the Tinker Bell movies (which were all surprisingly good)?
Ok I’ve already commented on this video a couple times but I just remembered that the quote that u wanted a tattoo of “to die would be an awfully big adventure” Jeremy Sumpter who plays Peter actually has!! He had it tattooed on his ribs!
There’s definitely a darker Peter Pan film I think you’ll absolutely love - and it’s kind of a prequel. Called Neverland (2011) - a two parter miniseries. Such a brilliant set! Keira Knightley is Tinker Bell, Bob Hoskins is Smee, Charlie Rowe is Peter. Raoul Trujillo is in it too. Not spoiling his role, though. 😉
For quite some time I was pretty sure I remembered that Bob Hoskins played Smee twice. But for the life of me I couldn't recall which one the second besides "Hook" was, exactly. So I'm very glad to have received clarification now via you comment.
Yes! So excited that you're doing THIS version... I watched this one so often as a kid that I literally knew every word and could recite it with the movie. With all the Hook references, maybe you could do that one too at some point :3
You gotta watch Peter Pan Goes Wrong. As someone who knows the story so well and who does theatre, you will LOVE it. It’s about a group of actors who embody “the show must go on.” It’s hilarious!!!
I think the main reason why I love this movie so much is because it did Native American culture right. Past adaptations eather made fun of them or full on left them out to I’m happy there’s representation for them😌
I would say this is my favorite Peter Pan movie. Like you had said, the music is awesome! I originally had only seen it on VHS I believe, so I didn't know there was a delete scene for the ending. In it, Peter returns to the house and finds Jane, Wendy's daughter. And much like the additional story of Peter Pan, he takes Jane to Neverland.
I mean… if they did just a full straight retelling of the original book, it would get REALLY dark. It takes the kids time to reach neverland- they steal raw fish from the mouths of seagulls. Kids still age on that island, and Peter gets rid of them when they are too old. They sometimes “pretend” to eat when they can’t find food, and it is not satisfying. The pirates, the Natives, and the lost boys all go to war on the regular and DO absolutely kill each other. Fill in all the little details with no softening of blows and it gets dark pretty fast.
To be honest, I think this Peter Pan hits home a very important message; "Just because one must grow up, doesn't mean one has to stop caring for others." Hook basically represents everything that Peter Pans fears he'll become, a senile and cynical old man with no joy or fun in his heart, which in a twist of irony, makes Hook just as much a child as Peter. So out of fear, Peter remains a carefree boy in the hopes of avoiding such a horrible fate. Wendy proves both of them wrong, in a twist of fate that proves that even grown ups can feel joy in their life in spite of everything else.
Also adore the part where they talk about Mr. Darling being brave for putting away his dreams, this adaptation is really one of the kindest in its portrayals of the dad.
I love what he's saying because I love the 2003 live action movie: Peter Pan and the movie :Hook with Robin Williams and the Walt Disney Peter Pan that is the cartoon too!
I was the complete opposite, I had one on Peter and was terrified of Hook. Now that I am older and realized I am Ace, I actually just wanted to be Peter's best friend. Still a bit scared of Hook though ngl
I was goddamn OBSSESSED with this movie when I was a kid, Jeremy Sumpter was probably among my first gay boy crushes, and honestly Jason Isaac’s depiction of the dad/Hook, also pretty hot 😌✨
This is my favourite Peter Pan film. I grew up with this story and the Disney version, as a kid all I wanted to be was Peter Pan. I’m currently once again entering a Peter Pan phase (think it’s my brain’s response to having to grow up, I graduated uni this year) and it’s really validating to see your love of the story and this film come through. I agree the music is incredible, James Newton Howard I think. In lots of versions of Peter Pan Peter is played by a woman and that gives my queer heart a lot of joy. Think they made the right decision to cast Jeremy here though. The entire cast is brilliant. I’ve not seen Hook but it’s now on my list.
This movie always makes me wanna cry by the end, just makes me feel like a literal kid A more scary or adult Peter Pan would be cool not gonna lie, but this version is just perfect to me
Peter Pan is not a Disney character. He is a J.M. Barrie character. Disney made a cartoon about Pan in 1953. Barrie wrote the novel in 1904. Peter Pan (2003) is based on the work of Barrie, not the Disney cartoon.
The music was composed by James Newton Howard, also known for his work on The Hunger Games, The Dark Knight (with Hans Zimmer obv.), The Sixth Sense, and Unbreakable. Fuckin legend.
I always thought that if a darker Peter Pan was ever made it would be where Peter Pan is the real villain and Captain Hook was one of his original Lost Boys. It she show how Peter Pan never grew up while he was in Neverland but every time he went back and forth from Neverland to England he ages just a little bit and he would bring back orphans to be part of his crew. And the lost boys would still age but they age slower than average people and they could live about 30 years in Neverland and only age a year. One of Peter Pan's very first Lost Boys was named James who was an orphan who started to look about 13 so Peter Pan dueled him and he cut off James's hand and fed it to the crocodile and then he exiled James and so James decided that he was going to get revenge on Peter Pan one day but he didn't know how to get back to Neverland until one day he happens to stumble upon a couple fairies working on changing winter to Spring and he took their pixie dust and used it to get back to Neverland where he convinced other Lost Boys to join his crew. It would explore how Peter Pan would kill off the lost boys that aged into their teenage years... I don't know I always thought it'd be very interesting... also it would reveal the reason why Peter Pan can fly without pixie dust is because when he first met Tinkerbell she found him as just an infant and gave him a kiss that gave him the power to fly and speak to fairies because by kissing him she accepted him as one of her own and looked out for him until he was about 9 when she finally decided to take him back to Neverland.
This was my favorite movie growing up. I watched it so many times that I wore out/broke the DVD and my mom had to buy me another one! And Jeremy Sumpter as Peter Pan i think was my first crush EVER! This movie hold a VERY special place in my heart and i get goosebumps every time i hear the music
Omg I forgot to watch this yesterday I’ll watch it later but I’m excited I love love love this Peter Pan film it’s my childhood favorite. Love Jeremy sumpter and love your channel 💙💙
I am right there with you. Love this movie. Love all the little touches. Love how Sumpter just does the slightest aspect change to show you when he's forgotten something (which they first really illustrate with John, but do again to crushing effect at the very end right after he says goodbye to Wendy and you realize he's just forgotten all of them). Great actors all around. Isaacs is inspiring. So is the music which is just chills. Have you seen the animated series "Peter Pan and the Pirates"? It seems to have fallen down the time hole, but it's a really solid adaptation with so much character development and Neverland lore. You might really like it. Here's the intro: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PlgEH2IAKHI.html
Honestly I liked how this version had a much more serious, darker tone, wasn't racist like the 50s version. And I also thought Jason Isaac's was way sinister and sadistic
11:15 my grandma and mom had to put my allergy pills in a spoonful apple sauce every night so I could learn to swallow them. 20:25 That's something that's been part of Hook's character since he was created. 22:00 I keep TELLING people; It's bloody Captain Jack Sparrow! Please react to: Finding Neverland as well as Hook.
This is my favorite adaptation of Peter Pan ever, I also saw a dark version short film that came out in 2012 it honestly ruined my childhood and I always try to forget it its called East of Kensington I don't recommend anyone young to watch this but since Movies in Depth wanted to see a dark version I thought he might want to see this
The guy who did the soundtrack is James Howard Newton. He also did Treasure Planet, Atlantis, the lost empire, and the Dark knight series to name a few
there is a very dark and twisted version of peter pan called the child thief, but it is a book rather than a movie. it has beautiful art of the characters to accompany the reading and i would recommend reading if you want to explore darker versions of the story.
I LOVE this Peter Pan movie! It’s my favorite one out of all of them. I mean I’ll still always love Disney’s original and all. The lost girls which is a Peter Pan remake but it’s based on the darker version of Peter Pan & it’s about the generation of the darling girls. But the 2003 version will always be the best Peter Pan film of all time. I discovered this film when I was like 12 or 13 & even tho it came out a year before I was born I couldn’t even believe that it existed until I found out about it. It’s the best! Love your videos!
@@marrychrismas306 I personally don’t think he would’ve actually hurt them & no he’s not the villain. But there are a lot of different versions like in the original book he did actually cut the kids if they got to big to fit into their slides that leads to their house & that he didn’t know the difference between real or make believe so some of their meals wouldn’t even be with real food. I never believed He’s a villain bc I never really heard the original till a couple of years ago, I grew up on Disney’s version & then this one too later on. So it’s hard for me to even see him even as a bad guy. He’s just a kid who ran away from home and doesn’t have parents or any guardians to teach him what’s right or wrong. And he’s just a kid who doesn’t want to grow up bc he’s scared of what’s to come in the future.
The first time after watching this movie I ran to write a letter to Peter Pan, and I found fairy dust and a hand written reply from Peter himself! I did that often, sometimes leaving a book (the Chronicles of Narnia) for Peter to take with him to Neverland to read. To this day I still have the fairy dust in a velvet pouch and will always believe in Peter Pan.
Issacs is an amazing Hook especially as a stage version but no one out Hooks Dustin Hoffman as the epic story tale version. Jeremy was also very well cast as Pan. And there was killing in this one, for heavens sake Hook is eaten alive by the Croc.
Modern medicine is fine, but you have to remember in the Edwardian era there were medicines with shit like cocaine, arsenic, heroin, and mercury in them!
Please tell me that I was not the only one watching this movie growing up and wishing that someone had pet reactions to Wendy kissing him to me kissing them lol Goals to aspire to
