The transformation into donkeys wasn't because of anything in the drinks or cigars. It was the magic of Pleasure Island, where a poorly-behaved child who made a jackass of himself would literally become one, the flipside of the Blue Fairy's promise that if he proved himself worthy he could ascend to humanity. "Pinocchio" was absolutely a "morality play" from Disney.
@SwiftFoxProductions
@SwiftFoxProductions 3 года назад
Pinocchio is definitely a morality tale, though it should probably be pointed out that many of those elements are from the original Italian novel "The Adventures of Pinocchio", not from Disney. Walt Disney just adapted the story of Pinocchio, he didn't create it. There are certainly some elements that are unique to Disney's version but, specifically being turned into a jackass as a result of bad behavior on Pleasure Island (called the Land of Toys in the novel) is taken directly from the original story. Random Fun Fact: The novel, "The Adventures of Pinocchio" is, actually, the 2nd most translated book ever. The only other book to be translated into more languages is the Holy Bible.

That's right. It didn't make it clear why it took Lampwick so long to turn, though. Pinocchio was very cautious and not as given to misbehaviour as the other boys, which might explain why he was the last to start changing. I remember he only tried taking a major drag of the cigar because Lampwick teased him about the cautious way he was smoking.

A few things to note are: This was Walt Disney’s second animated film right after Show White. This was released in 1940 and they had to change the character of Pinocchio because in the original book he was absolutely horrible and killed Jiminy with a hammer. The reason for the books of Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan in the beginning background was they were supposed to be a teaser as what Walt had planned, but was having continuous problems with adapting them and due to world war 2 those projects had to be shelved and smaller less expensive films were made instead. Alice and Peter would not be made and released until the early 1950’s. This was the first in a long line of Disney films to win the Academy Awards for Best Original Song and Score. Which would not happen again until 1964’s Mary Poppins and then again until 1989’s The Little Mermaid. This is one of those rare films where the villains win. The boys are still donkeys, Honest John and Gideon have their reward and the Coachman will just keep continuing his operation.

I read the original book when I was little and it's soooo much darker. For instance, Pinocchio smashes the cricket with a hammer because he's too annoying (he still comes back as a spirit); the Fox and the Cat end up hanging Pinocchio to a tree to steal his money; the fairy fakes her death to guilt-trip Pinocchio for his misbehaviour; and Lampwick dies right in front of Pinocchio (a while after being transformed) because he's been overworked as a donkey. This movie was also released almost 30 years before the rating system we have today in the United States was put in place. The ratings to start were: G for general audiences, M: Suggested for mature audiences - Parental discretion advised, R: Restricted - persons under 16 not admitted, unless accompanied by parent or adult guardian, and X: Persons under 16 not admitted. It evolved during the 1970's-1990's). Before then from the 1930's until 1968, there was the Motion Picture Production Code (or more better known as the Hays Code). The story of Pinocchio is originally an episodic novel for kids written in Italy in the late 19th centuary. It's basically teaching kids to behave: go to school, work hard and honestly, respect your parents, don't follow bad advisors and so on. For that reason the original story is not really cohesive, it's just Pinocchio doing things and learning a lesson each time. To answer some of your questions during the movie: in Italy, childern got called "jackasses" when they were not studying (it's an old saying, I don't think parents use it anymore). So Pleasure Island is a not-so-subtle metaphore for that. Pinocchio and the other kids only thought of playing without doing their duty and that's why they get transformed into donkeys. No weird potion in their drinks, it's just their behaviour that transforms them. Moreover, in the original version, Pinocchio too gets fully transformed into a donkey and sold to a circus. He becomes some kind of donkey star in the circus, but one day he breaks one of his legs and his owner decides to kill him by drowning him in the sea. However fishes sent by the Fairy come and eat all the flesh, allowing the wooden puppet out from the donkey body (yeah, dark). In the Disney version they skip directely to him jumping from the cliff. On a side note, the original story is way way darker. In the Disney version, Pinocchio is very naif and gets dragged around by the Cat and the Fox, while in the original version he is way more in control of his actions and he is actively just doing what he wants, including selling the school book Geppetto bought for him by selling his only jacket to get into Stromboli's puppet show, following Lampwick to Pleasure Island, killing Jiminy (so his conscience), stealing, lying. Not really as cute and relatable as the Pinocchio in the Disney movie. And that is only one of the changes, some of the scenes in the original are really heavy. I think the darker one is the Cat and the Fox hanging Pinocchio after stealing his money, and waiting for him to suffocate (he plays dead to escape, as puppets don't need to breath). So yeah, hardcore teachings of the 1800. If someone is interested, a new Pinocchio movie by Matteo Garrone came out in 2019 (it was Oscar nominated for best costumes in 2021) and it's really faithful to the original story. Btw, I really enjoy watching your reactions! Keep up the good work!! :) (Sorry for the italiansplaining ahah)

"This cannot be a G rated Disney movie" This film actually pre-dates the film ratings system. The MPAA didn't create the ratings system until 1968, 28 years after this film came out. Some films that were made before the ratings system was a thing have been retroactively rated, although many have not and remain unrated. While I'm not certain, it's most likely that any films that were rated retroactively were rated G; because if they weren't suitable for general audiences they would never have seen the light of day under the Motion Picture Production Code which the ratings system replaced and was just an unambiguous list of things that weren't allowed to be in movies.

because of the smoking?
@Teelenth
@Teelenth 3 года назад
@@theawesomeman9821 No, not really. Honestly, for the most part, people in 1940 didn't really care all that much about smoking. It was understood that it was something children shouldn't be doing--hence the scene where Pinocchio gets sick from it and the fact that Lampwick smokes is a sign that he's a bad influence on Pinocchio--but people didn't really give a second thought to smoking in general because it was just a thing that the majority of adults did at that time. The stigma against smoking didn't really develop until the late 80's/early 90's. It largely came about because of a series of medical studies detailing just how serious the potential long term health effects of smoking actually were and the revelation that the tobacco industry had been aware of this information and had actively been keeping the general public in the dark about it in order to preserve their profit margins. That really turned a lot of people against smoking on principle and started making people concerned about the way smoking was depicted in media, especially media intended for children.

@@Teelenth Yes. I read that in the 70s, lots of pregnant women smoked. It was a really dangerous era, actually. Lead-based paint on baby toys, concrete around playgrounds...and to be honest, this movie would have definitely had a PG rating if it came out even 40 years ago for scary scenes.
@Teelenth
@Teelenth 3 года назад
@@strawberrysoulforever8336 40 years ago? As in 1981? No, this movie would definitely not have gotten a PG rating in 1981. PG was very different back then; it wasn't just a dumping ground for animated kids' movies that have maybe one or two mildly naughty jokes and a scene that overprotective adults think is too scary for children without ever actually asking any kids how they feel about it. You see, PG-13 didn't exist until the mid-80's; before that PG was the only rating between G and R. Back then a film didn't really get a PG rating unless it had something that was obviously not appropriate for younger audiences, like nudity or swearing.

The book is much darker. In it, Pinocchio kills the cricket with a hammer pretty much at the beginning. As a kid, we had big LP records of kids stories, and the Pinocchio one had the Disney picture on it, but was a reading of the original, so that was an ... interesting ... experience as a kid, to hear the narrator suddenly go "and he threw the hammer and BLAM! -" It went on to describe the cricket, all smashed against the wall even.

In the book, he was made out of a magical log, and was already showing signs of life, while Geppetto was making him, and causing trouble. Pinocchio was also meant to die at the end, being hung by the cat and fox, but the author's publisher made him continue the story, so that is when the blue fairy appeared and brought him back to life, instead of at the beginning, and the story continued with all the other things you see in the movie as well. The fate of the donkey kids was more brutal too in the book.

When You Wish Upon A Star is such a beautiful song that makes me choke up (trying my best to not shed tears in public or at work) everytime it's played or just thinking of it. Aside from being the national anthem of Disney, it's regarded as a Christmas song here in Sweden, as it reflects on the Star of Bethlehem and the song is played at the end of From All Of Us, To All Of You, which have been broadcasted on SVT (Sveriges Television, Sweden's Television) ever since the 60's, and the rest of Scandianavia.

This movie has so many little touches that just make it superb. The charm in Geppetto’s voice when he sings Little Wooden Head, the design of the Blue Fairy, I love the fact that she’s never fully solid, you can see through her entire body, really adds to the supernatural and otherworldliness of her character. I also love Figaro, how annoyed he was getting with Pinocchio’s constant questions, and his joy and little backflip into Cleo’s bowl to give her a kiss… I think what stands out the most for me with this film, none of the villains are defeated or face karma. Sure, Stromboli lost his headliner, but he still had the rest of his puppets and money, Honest John and Gideon got paid, the Coachman probably ended up finding Lampwick and selling him along with the other donkeys… it could be argued that Monstro died when he crashed into the cliff, but I never got that impression.
