In an interview Hugh Jackman did for the film, he said that for the famous hammer scene, during one of the takes he thought he had done a take where he got his most anger out of him, and he thought that they would definitely use that take in the film and then Denis Villeneuve (The Director) comes up to him and says "That was good but I need you to get really angry" and then the next take they did was the one in the film.

The significance of the puzzles is a reference to the Greek story of The Minotaur and the Maze. The Minotaur was a beast that fed on children who was inprisoned in a maze. Eventuality Theseus was tasked with killing him but no one ever got out of the maze alive. In order to survive he was given a sword and a string. The sword was to slay the beast, the string so he didnt get lost inside the maze. In the movie both men are looking for the beast but only one of them keeps his wits about him. One man has the sword but not the string. Thats why he gets lost.

The dad is not ahead in the investigation. Loki has never failed a case. Nothing he has found can be used in court. He very nearly ruined his family and should be thankful for how everything turned out.

@TurntBucket
@TurntBucket 2 месяца назад
@@Ryan-ju4pn Yes, his intuition was good. But he wasn't ahead in the investigation. He might have been ahead in getting to the culprits but that is not all that an investigation is (the key info was given by the daughter's friend, which should have been made known to everyone immediately. Besides that it is unclear who would have figured it out first). He potentially could have gotten himself killed and his daughter would have died also. He is lucky Loki made it in time. Also, the father's interference led to the lady speeding up her timeline. That guy was still a key suspect. The police were supposed to be watching him. The police department messed up. I am talking about Loki being good, not the police department as a whole.
@Ryan-ju4pn
@Ryan-ju4pn 2 месяца назад
@@TurntBucket I agree with all of that but I don't think you're giving the father enough credit. It was his vigilante work that set up the key clue where the girl who escaped had heard his voice, allowing him to realize where his daughter was. I don't think his character wanted to share this information with the police because he lost his faith in them and because the pace of an actual investigation on this detail would be too slow. He wanted to get his daughter now. But doing these "what ifs" is hard with a Hollywood movie where suspense is more important than what would happen in reality. In the real world, I think the police would have executed a search warrant for Billy's house after his initial arrest, or the aunt would have killed and disposed of the little girls after Billy went missing, or the dad wouldn't have turned his back on the aunt in her house when he felt she was involved in the crime, etc.

Loki (Gylenhall) would have most likely found them pretty quickly. All the evidence was converging. Jackman was actually slowing down Loki's investigation because Loki cannot allow vigilantes and also the more Jackman acts out the more he becomes a suspect. If Jackman just waited Loki would have found their daughters nearly as fast or faster than they did. There is a lot of symbolism of Jackman losing his faith. That is part of the reason for the intro and his character being depicted as being very religious early on. And the torture building is his dad's old place and it's so run down because Jackman cannot face the fact his father passed away so he never got around to renovating it. Look into a breakdown of this film there is a lot of symbolism and a lot of subtext that shows what the characters mean and who they really are. Jackman is not a hero and actually partially destroyed his family. He should have been there for his son and wife. But he was playing vigilante. Making the detectives waste their time with his torture victim as a missing person. They could have observed his behavior but instead he was locked in a torture room. Jackman's son needed him and his wife went insane with despair. He was out torturing a suspect wasting everyone's time and ultimately torturing a partial victim and a retard.

Arguably, the movie disagrees with how you felt about the end of the movie. Hugh Jackman's character slowed down and distracted the investigation the entire way, put both his and the other daughter at risk of losing their parent anyways and only accomplished torturing another victim, who had the mental capacity of a 10 year old. He literally helped the villains continue to hurt this victim. More importantly, like the end of Seven, Hugh Jackman gave the evil woman and her dead husband a victory. They explicitly hate God and knew that stealing children turned people into "demons" as part of their insane war against God. They succeed because Hugh Jackman's character proceeded to spend no time during this time comforting or helping his family and only hurt everyone around him. More importantly, the movie goes out of the way to highlight how Hugh Jackman's character is a "doomsday prep" and was so quick to use torture because he was been looking his whole life for an opportunity to act out his violent fantasies. In essence, he used his daughter's kidnapping (although he does care about them) to instead finally act on his fantasies and cares about them more than actually being productive in the case. For example, even when he starts to realize that torture is not effective (it's widely know that a tortured person will only say what it takes to stop the pain, so you can't be sure if you can trust them even if they tell the truth), he can't stop. He always believed his fantasies would keep him and his family safe, like a "break the glass in case of emergency" last resort if things got too bad. But it did nothing (in fact, it actually held them back/wasted time) but he was such a prisoner to his fantasies that he didn't know how to do anything else.

@grasshopperye3593
@grasshopperye3593 5 месяцев назад
Precisely. The movie is also a great critique of how harmful hypermasculinity can be, imo. Jackman is the machoest guy around--extremely self-reliant, to the point that he puts no faith in community, and so is obsessed with strength, and believes he shoulders responsibility for the fate of the whole family. And his family echoes that--his wife doesn't act like a partner, she fully blames him for something totally out of his control. I always thought the anger Jackman has throughout the movie is not just a symptom of stress/grief over his daughter, but a symptom of a primal identity crisis. He can't reconcile his failure to protect his family with who he is. It's spinning him out in every way possible, and it makes him not just unproductive but enormously destructive. Alex is by far the most tragic victim of this story, but there is something tragic about the essence of Jackman's character as well. This spiral feels sort of inevitable, like with Azula in ATLA lol--like the seeds of psychological weaknesses were always there, the fall would be inevitable. Jackman's uber pessimistic world view and strong man obsession made his psychological stability so precarious, he really had no shot at navigating this situation without self-destructing. The first instance he's truly tested, when his daughter is taken, he's unraveling in the worst of ways, and his family is left in pieces by the end, and he's unwittingly served his enemy's plans by becoming the demon they wanted to unleash.

Eh, not really for me. My biggest issue is that it ignores what would be the fate of Keller, even if Loki does find him. Keller still tortured Alex, a mentality ill dude who suffered a whole amount of abuse. Keller's gonna wind up in jail or him and the Birches are gonna be facing a huge lawsuit on them for the pain and suffering they caused Alex. Sure, maybe Keller will take the whole blame himself, but he's gonna end up leaving his wife and kids struggling. And the fact that the movie glances over this and makes it seem like Keller did the right thing feels ludicrous. Not even the Birches have a moment to even feel guilty for be complicit in Alex's torture.

@@osmanyousif7849ah cry me a river mate, if Keller never locked up Alex then the kids would never have been found, the only reason Keller even knew to go to the grannies house was because Alex said it, which then led to the daughter that ran away saying you were there to Keller. @@dt73034 yeah, that’s another issue you brought up that I hated about this movie. And that issue is that I really don’t think Holly Jones should’ve been the twist villain, who kidnapped the girls. In fact, the whole “War on God” part of the plot should’ve been cut all together. I honestly would argue that it doesn’t add much to the film, other than some on-the-nose symbolism. It also distracts from what could’ve been a good set up in the first act. But also, the way it’s set up, in order for Loki to find the 2 girls relies too much on coincidences. And then there’s a whole reveal that it was Holly this whole time. What really gets on my nerves is why in the world does she not kill Keller when he finds out, let alone goes into a whole monologue? This is literally makes her look dumb. Especially when you see in a lot of movies, how some evil villain says that they’re going to have this person live so they can suffer, only for the hero to manage to escape and end up defeating them in the end. It also makes Keller look even more dumb that he does nothing to try and stop her. Dude is in his 40s, is a foot taller than Holly, and more built to be physical and agile. This whole thing could have been avoided, if he made a move.
@dt73034
@dt73034 8 месяцев назад
@@osmanyousif7849 yeah I agree with you on some of that, I think in the real world Loki doesn’t even find the killer as has been the case in so many kidnappings/murders where they don’t find the killer or kids till 20+ years, Jimmy saville for example I know he didn’t kill but he was in public eye for 20 years while being a sex predator, sometimes it’s obvious to the viewer but in the real moment it can seem impossible, while all also having to deal with bullshit rules like having to let Alex go even though he said what he said to Keller outside the station as if a father makes that up when his child is missing, I also think Loki did spend too much time worrying about Keller being the killer when surely the mother of Alex should’ve been a suspect all along, the fact Keller found her before Loki is also embarrassing on his part, I agree with Keller not making a move was stupid, but then again can you murder a woman based off a kid on drugs saying ‘you were there’ for all he knows she could’ve been just dreaming, but even then he goes to her house again knowing it looks suspicious and doesn’t think for a second that the suspected killer/kidnapper might not be armed and he was gonna get away with bringing his gun in his tools box, overall I think the pros outweigh the cons and it was a superb movie just because the acting and theme alone

I love this movie. It easily uncovers the prejudices, pre-judgments, and either rejection of the immoral actions contained in the movie perpetrated by the Father or an affirmation of his tactics by the viewer of the movie. Either you side with him and his emotional ad hoc rationalization of violence or you side with the cop and his "innocent until proven guilty" standard. It makes it all the more impactful that we know in retrospect that the suspect who was tortured is actually innocent and hence the father tortured a innocent person because of his emotions. The real monsters are Holly, the Father and his complices in the torture. Alex was just used by Holly to do the dirty work and considering that he is disabled, it makes it even more easier to manipulate him.

Denis Villeneuve is among the best Directors to ever live. As far as living, working, Directors; he's up there with Nolan, Tarantino, and Scorsese. Watch all of his movies! Police officers are not supposed to enter an interrogation room with a firearm for that exact reason. Desperate people do desperate things. I don't think they found him at the end. But I love that they left it open for both realities to exist. Schrödinger's ending.
