Mike's statement "It's not my fault you don't like girls" can also be read as him knowing that Will "just isn't into girls yet." But yeah Will being gay is hinted at earlier in several ways: his mom telling Hopper in episode 1 that he's not like the other boys, his dad calling him the F slur, the bullies telling Mike Will's "in fairy land," Joyce talking to a possessed Will in s2e8 about his "rainbow ship." The clues are there.

but also hopper being so damn proud bc not only did el make a "not mike" friend, she made friends with a girl her own age, a Peer, someone she can confide in and feel connected to when all she's ever felt is disconnect i just. YES. GIRLS. GO GIRLS

I understand where Will is coming from, having had 2 back to back traumatic experiences, sort of freezing him in place. Even after surviving the first incident, he still had to undergo intensive therapy sessions, endure more bullying from the kids at school, his mom and brother becoming even more protective. He wasn't really allowed to move forward like the rest of his friends, Dustin being gone during that time everything was calm after season 2. Mike and Lucas both being in relationships, being at that age when you're girl crazy, at least from my experience, you tend to overlook your friends being all wrapped up into dating for the first time. Ok, here's my personal anecdote to why I now see Will this season in an entirely new light compared to back when this show aired. Back then when I was disabled, I had a very close-knit group of friends who we hung out all the time damn near. Like those shitty sitcom friendships like Friends or How I Met Your Mother. Before I got cured so to speak, I began to get sicker, so we didn't hang out as much, started rainchecking. Other things happened, mother died, prolonged legal battle with my uncle over my grandfather's, returning to work, a very long recovery from the "cure", family drama with my sister and having to leave all that behind when a cat 5 storm destroyed my house and I was living out of own for 9 months until it was repaired. They all had their own life changes like relationships, marriages, new jobs, and before you knew it, I'm effectively starting over, again, and they've all moved on with their lives. I don't resent any of them, we still acknowledge one another's existence, and I did miss that close-knit group at one point, I finally moved on myself. So, retrospect, I understand Will so much now, his perspective more than anyone else in this show. My experience always nowhere near as traumatic and insane as his, but it still aucks seeing the people you were so close to move on without you. I do think that Will is gay. However I don't think that's what Mike meant when he said it's because Will doesn't like girls. I think he meant it (as much as you can mean something said in a moment of anger) that he thinks they're more grown up for being into girls now, and Will hasn't matured to that level (is what Mike is thinking).

That Will gay is was already indirectly established in the pilot episode. Will had just disappeared and his mother ran into Hopper's office to ask him to look for him. There she said that Will is not like all the other boys, he is different. There were other allusions. The girl at school touched him and he recoiled, taking a distance. All pilot episode. Season 2 finale at the dance party he danced with a girl, he couldn't keep any more distance from her. The Russian is a reference to the Terminator. Every season makes such references. Season 1 included ET the Extra-Terrestrial, season 2 Halloween Michael Myers and many more. Here it is Terminator. If you know all the old movies, it's fun to see these things here.

I liked your insights about Will... he is dealing with a lot of trauma and he is feeling alienated because of it. Think about this too (from his perspective...) The only time he has value in the group now is when his connection with the mind flayer is at its strongest. So in a sense, his only value to the group now is that connection! That's a lot for him to deal with as well! Thank you for keeping your jump scare in the final edit!
