Costly mistake and a big learning curve. Feel free to drop your opinions in the comments below and any advice that can be taken for next time. Thanks. "Isaiah 53"
Drew Nugent; that's right. all my 4x4 have come from good homes (like Dad brought it for mum to take the kids to school and shopping, low ks, never been off road, full service records etc. other wise you can be up for heaps.
Shark1076 too right. I did the same thing when I was younger. Ran into the deep end too fast and without the right gear. Car is likely a write off however...
OMG he is never going to make any real money out of RU-vid however it might help stop a few people who think they can do this and get away with it, we are not all experts
As long as he didn't try to start it, before clearing the water from the cylinders it should be "fine." You remove the spark plugs and crank the starter to let it blow the water out. But yeah there's probably some damage besides that. Edit: I said spark plugs, but realized this is probably a diesel
This video was terrifying... I went white and I wasn’t even in it. I’ve never seen the other side of a water crossing gone bad and this was just heartbreaking. Good on you for sharing mate. We need to teach each other and you did that with this video - huge respect!
@Da guy Tuckles A snorkel is a pipe of some sorts attached to the air intake on one end and the other end is mounted somewhere up high for example the cab of the truck etc. it allows fresh air in to the intake. As long as its mounted above the water level you are good to go.
No criticism for me, this is how we all learned ! From our own mistake only because if you only read and watch others you'll not have all the skill that you have
4x4 Camping and Adventures hi there I'm the grey Triton owner, we know it's rated to 500 mm water wading and it's rated at 600 when travelling below 5km/h and because the intake is in the right wheel guard it doesn't give water direct access so we took the risk hoping to get through Quick not expecting it to be that boggy and deep on the right side of the rut. And that was unfortunately the outcome. Lesson learnt for next time. Thanks for the comment.
Adventure Australia1 I understand checking the depth with a stick, personally I get in and walk through, no matter the depth. You may get wet and muddy, but at least you get a feel for what the base is like.
ahhh mate you really dont want to wade in around menai you dont know what your likely to encounter below the surface of the water out there ... its sad to say some people dump trash out there and there could be sharp metal or broken glass in those pools of water
hakanerdogan111089 the water didn't actually get into the cylinders which is why we were lucky enough to get it turned over on the day, however it did get into the turbo and intercooler so he's going to have to send it to another mechanic and Mitsubishi when he gets it back for a further check up as insurance did a terrible job checking everything. Thanks for the comment
Thanks for the educational video mate. At least youve got the guts to show people and teach people. Good in ya mate. Costly lesson and youve lesrnt from it. But in doing so. Youve done the best thing and that is youve shared it so others hopefully dont make the same slip up. It reminds me a little bit of ask the leyland brothers haha top show. Have fun in your awesome 4b
The only thing wrong with this is that you approached it too fast initially. Smooth, slow entry, smooth build up of speed (not too fast) to generate a bow wave, keep up that momentum, and you'd have done it. Watch the wave formed push up in front of the hilux, and take note of how little water there, even by the time you look at the front wheel.
How i wouldve gone about the hydro locked engine was to pull the injectors then cycle the engine over to push the water out. But youre incredibly lucky that the engine didnt send a rod thru the block.
Far to fast entry to deep water, no boat wave made so water get in engine right away if you 100mm deeper than truck built for you risk sacking in water and hydrolocking your engine, risk smashed valves, piston, splitting the block etc..... All in all a bit of a stupid move guys
Now you need to find a clean body of water & do the same thing to wash all the mud out... Seriously though thanks for an entertaining "What not to do video". Hope you get you Triton sorted without too much drama & are able to make many more vids.
Flyeroz haha thanks alot the triton will be back in about 2-3 weeks from the insurance company. And we'll be heading out to the watagans, thanks for the comment!
Looking forward to following channel too, pushing stock cars... I agree bro there is no end when you start with the lifts, tyres, reduction gearing etc anyone can throw money at a car and there will still be someones that makes yours look like kindergarten... look at the American mud trucks.. and people think they have big patrols here...
I actually walk through it if you need to cross, But I can see you could have gone around it. also went in too fast. Lesson learnt, hopefully, your car is ok.
I did the same thing with my petrol patrol. Air cleaner box full of water. I took spark plugs out and turned it over. 20 litres of water flew out and from the exhaust too. I left it sitting in the sun all day, put it back together and it started first turn. 15 years of trouble free motoring after that.
Scrolled through to comments to see if anyone recommended taking the plugs out. This is the right thing to do. Crank it to blow the water out, and you avoid bending rods and whatnot.
Adventure Australia thanks for the video. It educates so don't mind these dumb ass who write their hate speech. The world is full of them.Losers who have nothing else to do.You didn't have to post your video but you did and it's very education.Thank you.
Subdcribed! Now I NEED to know how is this going to end. I own a Triton (L200) myself. Its good to learn how its done, but also good how its NOT. I'm sorry it its at your expense. I have no experience off road. I have only done 2 river crossings. You can check it out in my channel. Anyways best of luck! Greetings from Panama.
Done the same in a 1980 defender 110 without a snorkel, got throught though. You must have some big brass balls doing that in a newish 4wd without mods mate. Hope you get enough veiws to buy you a new car!
Bro dont worry about the MALAKES that post NEGATIVE COMMENTS yeah... you Learn from your MISTAKES... LIKE YOUR OLD MAN WOULD HAVE SAID TO YOU A NUMBER OF TIMES TO PATHIMA EINAI MATHIMA OR OPOIOS THEN EXEI MIALO EXEI PODIA... BRO AS LONG AS YOUR OK DONT WORRY ABOUT THE CAR THE CAR CAN BE FIXED THE HUMAN CAN'T SO ALL THE BEST BRO STAY SAFE...
Actually I did this twice in the 80's with a hilux, drill is once you go under you Turn Off. You remove the filter, drain all water, take out the glow plugs, turn over gently to avoid a hydro lock. Any water should then be pumped out of the combustion chambers. Reassemble and good to go, EXCEPT your electrics in a modern diesel will need attention.
why have you done this to your car?? I don't understand! you basically wasted a lot of money and fucked your triton ? Well hope you've learned from that. have fun cleaning it! OMG
The triton is tough as nails mate, u just went over the air intake, with a snorkel you would have shit it in, you could have even put a tarp over your grill to stop water getting into the engine bay and make a wave as you go through,
Many years ago, when I didn't have as many Klms on my Odometer, I put a very large piece or farm machinery into a muddy ditch. I worked all day, I picked a nice hot , humid one, at getting it out. The owner of the farm returned from town, after visiting the dentist, a few minutes after I got it back on dry land. I thought he was gunna go Wombo! He looked around at the scene of devastation, there was mud everywhere. He said "Looks like you've had quite a day here, did you learn anything?" "Let's go up to the homestead and have a cup of tea". He saw the look on my face, and he said "You know, the only folks that never make a mistake are them that never do anything". I've never forgotten his words.
That was possibly the most dangerous, incorrect and dumbest pull out ever- you don't just drive as hard you can you go slow and slowly add pressure its actually insane what a rookie error the crossing and the tow out was
Actually I will add just to correct you. A snatch rope requires acceleration in order for it to use elastic momentum to work. This being the reason it's called a snatch rope and not a tow rope! Thanks again.
I don't have a triton but a navara d40. The dealership I purchased it from put petrol in it by accident. Warranty work was carried out. And 50,000 ks later its still going. All stock still.
good video and good on ya for having the balls to admit you did something stupid, if it wasn't for people like you people like me would be doing the exact same shit
Not the smartest move without walking it particularly without a snorkel.. at least you had the balls to admit it was not the smartest idea and showed the video anyway....
NOW SPRAY ONLY A BIT OF WATER IN THE INTAKE!!! THAT WILL CLEAN IT AND LEAVE THE ENGINE RUNNING WHILE YOU PUT A BIT OF WATER IN YOUR INTAKE TO WASH OUT YOUR ENGINE!!!
Exhaust spitting muddy waters, The type of story you tell and people be like nah bro impossible, story is fake up until they see the video and be like damn that's awesome. Love this channel
I disagree. You should know you can't cross water like this long before you've even thought of buying an off-roader. Learn the following the easy way (by reading and then doing immediately): Replace your brake fluid Replace your engine oil Replace your gearbox and all differentials' oil Replace all associated filters I would strongly suggest you open that engine up, clean every square mm and assess the internal damage, if there is any.
Mrcloc unlikely that there was any damage to the engine itself judging only from the sound it was making, but seeing as mud and shit have now found its way into every single tiny crevice of that vehicle it is going to have untold issues in the future, so he has done a lovely job of trashing his previously shiny and new car. His check engine light was most likely on due to the disconnected intake and airflow meter, and I would suggest the alternator is full of muddy water, hence the alt light. Your advice to change the fluids and lubricants is spot on, most Japanese Utes have nothing in the way of raised breathers for the diffs and transmission.
R Soul The old school sons got breathers this new junk hasn't even got decent bashplates, and the wheel bearings die quickly on new Ute's if crossing water alot,.
For some of us old wrinklies dealing with the bow wave problem in the days of our youth, there were ways and means of getting through up to about 1 metre deep water without snorkels with petrol spark ignition engines but it was far from perfect. One trick was a big canvas groundsheet tied off at the top, wrapped down in the front of the body and tied through underneath. A good trick was to chomp up a chewing gum and seal off the transmission breathers to avoid water being sucked in when hot diffs and gearboxes suddenly cooled in fresh cold floodwater. Some folk would pull off the fan belt to avoid cutting a circle out of the radiator core from fan blades bending forward hitting solid water. It worked for a while but only so long as you kept moving forward. If you stopped the game was over. There was also a wonderful spray called "Holts" which sealed ignition systems with a sort of a hard varnish. The beauty about the old cars was the lack of complicated electrical systems. Drain it, dry it, change the oils and relube and you were good.
Ive taken an XB falcon through deeper water than that, but it was a calculated gamble (we were out of beer!!!) and it was prepped beforehand- tarp over the bonnet and grill, tied to front door posts and underneatth), loosen fanbelt right off so the fan wouldnt punch through the rad, and a full bucket (4kg) of grease over dizzy and leads, plus it was a gravel track flooded (still and clear water)- was fun watching the water flow upwards over the windscreen! One thing to look for if you stall out like you did, after its recovered, pull the aircleaner first- if its full of water- DONT start that engine- petrols, pull plugs, diesels pull the injectors before trying to crank it, if its full of water ie hydraulically locked, when you try and start it- it WILL 99 times out of a hundred break a crank, blow a head gasket or even throw a leg out the side of the block- new engine time then- all for the sake of 5 or 10 mins with some spanners
Back in our youth we stole one of my friend's brother's Mitsubishi Colt and went to a national park. A similar thing happened. We were a bunch of stupid broke students. The owner of the vehicle still doesn't like us to this date. It has been over a decade.
This guy is a legend, most people commenting probably dont even own a 4wd or we even get one dirty. He probably would of made it if he went slow like the hilux did, when going fast it creates waves and back pressure in the engine bay which got sucked straight into the air filter
Just another tip. You should pull out any sticks/branches from the water crossing. They can punch through radiators, sumps or fuel tanks. Our motto when we went out is if ya didn't get stuck at least once a trip ya not trying hard enough. People who have fault free 4x4 fun only do front lawns and car park's. Put breather kits on diffs gbox and transfer case as well. Plum it all to a high point in your engine bay or what I do is put it into your air filter box so the high point is your snorkel. If you spent any real time in that water tgey would all have water in them
Funny guy. At least he pushed his car to the limit. He sorted it out at the end. Good on him. Better than sitting at home on your games machine or standing on a street corner with a bottle of booze like 90% of all today's youth.
Clearly you’re a muppet that needs to try again. I have a Triton and a Freelander 2 that have mad it through 500 &600mm easily. It’s about how you do it. If I rammed a hilux/patrol into the puddle they would also suffer.
Has nothing to do with it being a Triton, a stock Hilux/Ranger ect would have had same result. So many muppets out there ready to bag a car just because they don't have it or like it, if you actually knew anything about stock 4wd utes you wouldn't have written that ill-informed crap.
No criticisms from me Mate. You weighed up the possibilities, and even though you knew it might of been risky, you still 'had a go'. That's how we all learn, and if we were all honest, we would be 'fessin up' about all the dumb things we have done in "having a go". But yes, fit the snorkel, muddies and lift kit, then show us again how you go.
If you have the money to burn on your hobby then go for it. Nothing different than those who buy new phones only to hammer them to pieces. Having your money in a box sitting in your closet gives less satisfaction.
Just found your channel mate and subbed based off some of your other vids but glad I found this one as I'm about to start getting out there in a recently bought Triton. Your vids have been really helpful and I have to say that your calm acceptance of things that could have otherwise blown a mental head gasket is a great reminder to take any mistakes in stride. Good on you mate and cheers for the content.
All i can say mate is thanks for sharing 😁. Obviously u didn't have to because it went wrong this time but it hey we all learn from these things . Ps you kept very calm considering the situation 👍👍👍. Top bloke
Sorry to see the car get stuck like that. So enough said on that. Best thing is your honesty, copping it on the chin and good advice, especially about a snorkel. In my not so humble opinion, snorkels are worth their weight in gold.
we all had been young and dumb when we first started 4WD's. I would take note of the way the Hilux driver operated his vehicle, as most times you can spend mega bucks on your 4WD and have it looking the part. Just if the driver hasn't got the basics of how to drive, your stuffed. As 20 years ago, I also found the hard way myself.
Mitsubishi pick ups are the toughest available today, and have been since about 1996. Killing them is really hard. You just drank a lot of water the only reason the hills did it was because of the lift and snorkel. But we've all learned that way
You've sold me on the triton mate. Good vids. I don't wanna do anything crazy when I buy one but now I know it's potential. Cheers for keeping the language clean on your vids. My Little fella can watch too.
Been there buddy, done that on a Rhino. Without good mates my Rhino would be 30km off road in the bush still. I hope never to be in that position again, never in a nice 4x4 like yours. Get an old pig and do it up for hard core off road stuff and a-frame it to the play ground behind your nice shiny.
if you dont even know what hydro locking is why the hell would you want to mess around with deep water, and to get rid if hydro locking just take out the spark plugs and crank the engine, the pistons will squirt the water out and you should be fine.
Good on you for putting this up, it shows others what not to do. Too many people watching 4wd adverts and just powering on through. Of course you know now, but you went in way too fast, you should have had a snorkel, and you should have had a tarp over the radiator/grill. No crocodiles in that waterhole so you should have waded it first!
