This video teaches you how to understand how much water in motion your skimmer and pond will allow for. Following up on the first video, you will understand how to assess your skimmer and your pond design in order to be sure you are not making a serious design mistake. Building a Top Heavy water feature (one that does not function properly because it has too much water in motion) is one of the most common water feature design mistakes. John is going to help you avoid making this one!
“Ponds With Skimmers” is the second “Water In Motion” video in the Water Feature Design Series. Video #1 Is about understanding & Calculating Water In Motion, Video #3 is about Pond-less waterfall design, and Video #4 is about Negative edge design. Stay tuned ;)

Just a thought but maybe tie this video to the first of this series. For instance now that I know Water in Motion and water available in a pond how do you use this, to design a proper water feature. What options does this give you knowing this info. How does this effect pump selection? Looking forward to the rest of this series.

Another great example John, here's the metric: 2.6m * 4m = 10.4m2 pond area = 10.4 litres/mm storage, therefore 10.4 l/mm * 50mm = 502 litres of water in motion capacity

Hi John, you explained math in practical application to ease understanding. Pond genius and great instructor!!! 😁 I am just wondering why you do not consider, in the calculation, the volume of water being pushed by a pump. Pump's label indicates the maximum volume of water it carries per hour (also max height it can lift water). I thought before that this is the only thing I need to know to understand how much water travels into the hose/pipe at once while the pump is operating. As well as, the water level that is lessen in the pond. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 2 года назад
You should have a check valve between the pump and the plumbing. Once that line is full of water it will not flow back into the pond so therefore it is not part of water in motion. If you need to understand the actual flow rates from your pump you need to use a total dynamic head calculator to make those calculations👍🏻😎

Thanks for the information John, but I was wondering how you build an overflow when you are not using a skimmer? My pond will have an intake bay with a pump vault. Cheers.
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 3 года назад
A drain basin (box) installed at the proper location and elevation right next to the pond. Ideally right next to the intake bay. This will allow for water to run over the edge of the pond and into the basin. I also suggest allowing for water to “run over” the box and away from the pond so it may still overflow even if the basin gets clogged. We have used this method and just laid some extra liner over and doing a compression seal between the basin and the liner, we have just set it next to the pond and let it be a leaky connection...not so great. From now on I plan to do a liner “flap at proper elevation and seam tape the liner to the basin. If this is not possible I will mortar the area. I’m not a fan of water seeping under my liner all the time! CHEERS ;)

Is there some kind of number for size of pond at which it's better to have a skimmer than an intake bay?
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction Год назад
Not really a rule ‘per say”. A skimmer usually works fine for ponds up to 16’ x 16’ for us (even if we add a wetland filter). I always do a wetland if I can, and then an intake once we exceed about 9000 GPH. Sometimes we do a second skimmer if needed but I prefer (if budget allows) to do an intake once a second skimmer is needed!

where did you get the "2" available of water available " in your equation come from and how do we figure this out with a intake instead of a skimmer
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 11 месяцев назад
The water in the pond- I prefer it to only drop 2” by the time it reaches circulation? That “2”? More than that the water is low in the skimmer once it reaches operational circulation.

Thanks for the courses, if I have not look at them 5 times each I have seen none, it help us very much to see the way to go. Up north around Montreal, i find nobody who seem to have a 1/10th of your knowledge...I still have questions just to make sure that I understand , In this tutorial you calculation give (120 gallons) that is available for my water in motion right? Isn't any part of the moving surface water of the pond that as to be considered water in motion or it is of no importance ? Lastly from your #1 course we calculated a stream that has 400 gallons of water in motion , if we take your drawing as an example pond the only solution is to upsize my pond to 16X20 ? Thanks in advance, looking forward for other tutorials.

The bottom pool does not get incl. in the WIM calculation because when you unplug, it doesn’t flow down, it just stops moving!

John, can you share why you shoot for water level to be 1" below the top of the skimmer? If you wanted to be able to handle more water in motion, do you lose something by setting water level lower?
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 3 года назад
It is only for proper operation. If there isn’t any space between the top of the opening and the water level its pulling sub-surface and doesn’t work as well😎
@TylerTervooren
@TylerTervooren 3 года назад
Modern Design Aquascaping Inc. Right. Is there harm in setting water level lower? For example, 1” above bottom of skimmer opening vs 1” below top. Now you have room for a lot more water in motion. Maybe have to add more water more frequently due to evaporation?

The feature won’t work properly. Watch the next videos in the series on Water In Motion- you will understand by the end of the third video how it effects a waterfall design :)

So if it is 120 gallons of water in motion, what size pump does one get 120 gallons per hour? Sorry for the noob question
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 2 года назад
I think we may be confusing the relationship between water in motion and flow rate. Flow rate is your gallons or liters per hour. Water in motion is what you’re talking about. You could use a 4000 gallon per hour pump and still have only 120 gallons of water in motion. Does that make sense or answer your question?

Hi John, I am helping to build and design a pondless waterfall for a charitable organisation (the trust may decide they want a waterfall with a pond) we are all volunteers and I have no pond or waterfall building experience but have some landscaping experience so it should be okay in this video you mentioned 2 inches, I’m a bit unclear of what you meant by 2 inches is that the depth of the water from the surface flowing into the skimmer?
@damianv8200
@damianv8200 2 года назад
And I’m just wondering how do you service the pump if it’s buried below gravel inside the Aqua box? Do you just remove the gravel and open up the Aqua box or do you buy a pump that doesn’t really need servicing?
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 2 года назад
I believe that was how much the water in the pond dropped before it was in circulation. You just can’t build so much stream that the pond level drops too much before it reaches circulation because you only have so much of an opening in the front of the skimmer. If the skimmer mouth is 8” tall and the water level goes down 4” before recirculating begins, you only have 4” of water going into the skimmer at that point. Pumps are always installed by us in a skimmer or in a vault for easy access. We don’t bury the pumps. Vaults have a few inches of gravel over the lid just to hide them.
