With a brand new tent -an Isola 4 by Lite Outdoors and a tent stove by Firehiking ,I set out for my first ever hot tent overnight. As this is a tent without a floor I experienced water ingress during some heavy rain which challenged me to keep my bedding dry. Overall the experience went well but I need your experienced ideas on keeping water out. Please send them along in the comments. With thanks, Wendy. #hottent camping #liteoutdoors #firehiking #solocamping

Carbon monoxide monitors need to be 1/2 way up your wall, not at the top. Hope someone shared that with you. We are new to your channel ages 78 and 71 and thoroughly enjoying watching your outdoor videos. Thank you for sharing them.

Wonderful video! You might consider tucking the snow skirts into the tent, then placing a large waterproof tarp/ground sheet over the entire floor, including skirts. Any water entering the space will go under the skirts, then under the ground sheet, and out the other side. There will be puddling in the low spots under the ground sheet, so keep any eye out, especially on the perimeter. Happy Holidays. Lou, in Colorado.

Yes that works by tucking the flaps under and putting a tarp over. I do this with my tent with no floor. One year it poured rain and not a drop was inside. Great videos Gina from Ore.

Wendy, you are full of surprises! I love your attitude! I showed this to the hubby. He can’t believe it! He has a hard time understanding my love of sleeping in a tent and having a fire😂 He doesn’t camp. I go by myself which he doesn’t like but it makes me happy. He would rather I go with a friend but it doesn’t usually work out. Plus I honestly love that alone time. Keep them coming! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!

Now I have some questions. When backpacking a person cooks outside away from the tent to avoid attracting animals. Why was it okay to cook inside the tent? Was it a location with no animals, or does the fire/stove keep them away? Bears are hibernating? Thank you for showing the stove setup.
@wendyoutdoors2230
@wendyoutdoors2230 6 месяцев назад
The bears here don't hibernate much as our climate is temperate. The areas I have been to so far with this tent are very unlikely to have a bear problem. I do still put all dishes and food away in a vehicle. I assess the risks carefully- If I was in the backcountry I would cook outside under a tarp and hang food or put in a cache if available. Very sensible questions. thank you

It looks like a ground sheet of some sort is needed, perhaps fashion your bathtub style floor. Kodiak Canvas makes a high quality ground tart that is quite affordable (10'x10' is $40 USD). Or you could go with a silnylon ground sheet for weight savings, make sure it is rated for 1000mm or more, preferably 3000mm. Also, of course, location is very important. Good luck Wendy! It's good to see you out enjoying nature again!

I’d suggest trenching around the outside of the tent, if not also adding a drainage channel. That seems to work for me, back in the days when I did a lot of tenting… in particular in West Coast rain forests!
@wendyoutdoors2230
@wendyoutdoors2230 9 месяцев назад
thanks George- I agree about the trench however the campsites are made of packed road bed and I would need a pick to get through it. However, that method would be most helpful under normal ground circumstances.I will remember that for sure.

come across your channel today, & enjoyed watching your videos. if you haven’t done it yet, i suggest you get a lightweight camp cot ie. naturehike. it it rains, you wont get wet. still have to watch more of your videos. i love camping, but i don’t like camping where there’s no mountains😂. i have to drive at least 4-5 hrs to get to the mountains. will be following your channel

We have a hot tent, and had a similar experience at a rec site during an unexpected three of days of torrential rains in a week long camping trip. We stayed dry thanks to a large thick tarp on the ground (no stove because the fire ban was still on), but there was definitely water under the tarp, even with digging little trenches around the tent to try to guide the water away. Our future plan is to cut and tape the tarp to create a bathtub floor, although we're still deciding how to make that work with the stove - we might have to do just a half floor.
@wendyoutdoors2230
@wendyoutdoors2230 4 месяца назад
Yes Alison- I have considered that myself. I wonder if a fire proof mat over the tarp would be enough . I best experiment outside a tent-!! I have been told that you can get a fabric especailly for that. Would need further research. Maybe another viewer out there has some proven ideas.

What if you bought a tarp that would fit inside as a ground sheet. Or cut one to size and use small stakes to keep in place. At least to cover your sleeping area.

Hi Wendy, just found you and your channel. Enjoying watching the travels and the tips! I too have never had a hot tent. I am very interested in this tent and your stove. Just looked on the website for the tent. Which pole did you choose and or which do you recommend? Also, do you mind sharing your height? I'm 5'4" and like to be able to stand up and move around in tents. Can you stand up in it? Curious what your thoughts are about the Fire Hiking tent with the mesh side to keep the no-seeums out!. I'm in the states and bugs are a concern even in the fall. Did you consider the Fire Hiking hot tent? Or perhaps a better question, what made you pick the Isola over other tents? Hope you don't mind me asking all of these questions! Look forward to watching more of your vids. Take care, KK
@wendyoutdoors2230
@wendyoutdoors2230 5 месяцев назад
I have the standard pole as I am not planning to back pack with it. The main reason I chose this tent was because the company is Canadian and I was able to phone directly to the people and speak to the person in charge and ask questions. Which he answered very well for me. I have also had prompt responses to an email question I had. The service was tops. I am just over 5 ft so no problem standing in the middle!! I wont likely use this tent in the summer months so the bug thing is not an issue for me but a liner would be useful in the summer for sure. Hope this helps

Wendy, if you are close to areas you want to tent at, maybe check them out after it has been raining a lot and mark where there are no small lakes or just take a picture and come back later. We live in a beautiful country. Enjoy.

Most of your moisture comes from cooking and your body, you will need some ventilation while cooking and sleeping. Happens to me here and there, then I just open a little hole and all is well.

thanks so much for your comment. I have two top vents and I leave the bottom of the zipper open a few inches as well as pulling the top zip down about 6-8 inches, I still get condensation up from the bottom about 18 inches. Thankfully the remainder has remained dry while I keep the stove going. it seems adequate but it may be possible to improve yet. I can't really leave gaps along the bottom in rain but could do during dryer weather. really appreciate hearing from you.

Once camped at Disney and came back to a flooded tent. Then we noticed what everyone did was string up a secondary tarp to any of the trees near by as a second cover. Sometimes that not always possible but I would get even thin painters plastic and drape it over the tent. Seems to work and it’s not heavy and cheap enough to throw away if you had to.

@@wendyoutdoors2230 Hello there. We purchased 3 and 1/2 inch memory foam to put underneath us. That and sleeping bag rated at least 5 degrees better then the weather is perfect. The ground saps your body heat when you sleep on it. Most people use air matts which also wick away your body heat. The best is honestly a fur skin of a large animal like elk or buffalo but those are very expensive to buy. That is why we went memory foam. Have a wonderful holiday season. My Ellen and I are headed to Goldstream park for our second winter camp ofnthe year on New years eve. Seeing your vid just makes me want to go sooner!
