Q - Aarie73 - I just found an inch of water in the drivers side rear passenger footwell of my MK7 GTI and I can hear water squishing around under the carpet including under the drivers footwell carpet also. No water in spare tire well or passenger side footwells. Last week we hade major rain come through the area and the car has not been driven. I don't have a sunroof the windshield was replaced in 2017. Where do I begin? Should I take it to the dealer, tear out the interior? What would be the best way to get the water dried up from under the carpet? Would there be any electrical devices under the carpet on the drivers side?

Going to disagree with the ‘take it to the garage’ advice. Rear and front leaks stem mainly from the water crossing from the wet side of the door to the dry side - often by the speaker and leak across the lower door rim. This then runs in to the foot well. Telltale signs after rain are a wet track across the door rim from under the door card. Door card need to be removed and the seal in the speakers replaced where they are attached to the door.

As much as i love VW, this is not acceptable at all! THIS IS MY STORY: My car (2014 Golf) had a strange smell that suddenly became stronger and more consistent. I went nuts trying to find out what was causing the awful smell. My girlfriend are describing it as cigarette like smell. I had read about water leaks from speakers causing water in the rear footwells, but no one is mentioning that it smells bad, and since my carpets weren't soaked i figured that it must have been something else. A couple of years ago i spilled some housepaint in one of the rear footwells (No that's not what caused the smell), and i tried EVERYTHING to get that paint stain to go, with no luck. So i decided to change the whole interior carpet, myself. A lot of work pulling seats, plastics and basically the whole interior that touches the carpet, but i found a good condition carpet at the junkyard. THEN, when i pulled the whole carpet out the smell got even worse! I looked at the isolation that covers the whole floor and i found MOLD, lots of it! Pulled out the isolation and i found mold at both sides. So i guess i had a water leak after all.. I drenched the isolation in vinegar and other strong liquids, scrubbed and let it dry. Since the smell traveled to seats etc i now have to get one of those Ozone-cleaner machines to get rid of it permanently. So VW, take care of your customers, do a recall of ALL golf mk7s !!!! This is obviously a very common issue on these cars.

my mk7 w/no sunroof just started leaking during the last few months of SoCal rainy season. It pooled up many inches in the spare-tire area and underneath the front passenger-side carpet. Now everything smells like mildew... SOooo I'm amassing tools and watching videos on trim removal. I have a few chemical cleaners in mind to clean the carpet, but I'm just worried about how good a job I can really do with this. I'm going to put silicone around the 4 speaker seals, the rear vent seals (behind the bumper), and the taillights before I do the water test just because those are super common, and it'll futureproof them. I'll also check out the rear-camera drain tube. Then there is the issue of cleaning out the A/C because now it smells bad with the recirculated air setting. Some people suggested using an ozone generator for a short time, aside from merely replacing the cabin filter. But obviously avoiding overuse, since I've heard horror stories of the interior materials offgassing for weeks. Anyway, it's just really stressful, and I cannot currently afford this problem. I'm hoping that I can get it done over the course of a couple days and resume my life.

Diagnosing water leaks in some European VW dealership costs about 700€ (that's 840$) JUST TO DIAGNOSE some of more than a few design flaws every modern car has - so it should be free of charge, even once out of warranty. In my case the rear badge drain pipe is loose (the grommet came off) so I have some water beneath the spare wheel that came up through the rear right seat. The culprit also may be the two pressure vents at the back quarter panels, I need to remove the rear bumper to see. The car is 6 years old, out of warranty so I could be facing maybe 1000EUR worth of silly job anyone can do if I go to the dealership. So I will do it myself. All I need to worry about now are the drains beneath the windshield in the front. Once they get clogged, that is. But luckily that's a DIY job too.

It's the seal around the speaker, happened to mine. pulled drivers side rear door card and sure enough was coming in around speaker seal. pulled speaker and re-sealed and no more leak. I know there's a thread on the forum about it.

Same issue with my 2017 GTI, plus the drain in the boot was busted. I love that car, but I find it mind-blowing that the engineers at VW don't know how to make a waterproof car.

Have a golf mk7 1.4l 2014 and in the front passenger seat there is a leak in the footwell. The thing is there is a problem with the coolant aswell it finishes quicker than it should do so there must be a leak there aswell. Either it’s 2 separate issues or the coolant leak is going towards the front passenger seat footwell. Not sure what to do now as we bought it about 4/5 months ago and got tints on the car and replaced the brake pads and discs and a lot of other things so spent a lot. Not sure what to do now. Either try get it repaired because there was a problem when we bought it with the coolant leak, so try see if they can repair it again (if they even fixed it in the first place) or try to sell it. MOT and service is soon aswell

Its from the boot opener , there is a drain pipe where the VW logo opens the trunk

Leaking rear wash-wipe pipe drains in to the rear wheel well. The cable goes down the right side as you face the back. Look at the rear right tie-down point for corrosion - often with a. Blue tinge. It’s that pipe thats leaking

Three leaks on my 2017 GTI already. The entire carpet and padding had to be replaced. I am glad this was done under warranty, but I am very disappointed in VW since it appears to be a known problem for the last 10 years. Who wants to drive around in a moldy car? My parents' MK1 and MK2 never had leaks. The GTI is great to drive, but I will definitely stay away from VW from now on.

I have their same issue on my 2017 TSI, it’s been inspected at the dealership and the leak is confirmed to be coming from the speaker like in many other cases. they submitted the information from their inspection to the third party company “warranty solutions”, and it’s come back as denied so far. I have not yet spoken with them nor Volkswagen of America yet, but this really seems like something that would be covered under warranty for a 4 year old vehicle to be rusting from faulty/poor quality control. Any tips?

Denied, r they for real. I've a 6 yr old mark 7 , have spent this Christmas analysing ingress of a Lake of water in boot, also had to remove back seats. I'm no auto engineer but some of the basic water control is downright scandalous in the golfs, multitude of videos on line with same problem. Starting with the back top break light, disastrous poor seal, i put silicone Grease on it .the back door latch drain n grommet be are Sh*te too, must order a new one , i removed back lights and external cleaned drains of muck. Finally I haven't removed the back bumper to check vents, i might use a plastic bag taped just over the top of vent to allow water flow over the vent and still allow vent to work, just going to tape over top of plastic sheet n let it hang loose so I don't have to remove vents, we use this trick at work to protect screens during big washdowns of plants, i haven't even got to the speakers yet ... Endless list of appalling shi*e engineering.

Unbelievable they won't cover it. Sorry to hear. My golf had the issue with the rear speaker seals flooding the car THREE times in the first year, 15000kms of ownership. They obviously know its a problem by now and they should be covering it. Twice on one door, once on the other. Then now, at 40,000kms, 4 years old I've got the dreaded sunroof leaks too.
@StevieMoore

@@Austin-nx1kl yeah it’s shady. I fixed it on my own. Stealership wanted $1000 to fix a $20 (albeit annoying) problem. I just caulked them up. Now it’s repeating on the other/right rear door. It’s a know material quality problem and wouldn’t take them hardly any time at all to fix.
@StevieMoore
@StevieMoore 3 года назад
@@Austin-nx1kl I dunno about that, I only had the issue in the doors. But I’m sure it’s the same cheap ass material causing both problems, because... of course.
