Your Water Softener brine tank takes in water to make brine for the water softener regeneration cycle but how do they actually work? There is only one tube going into the tank but what is this fitting on the outside? Sometimes I see water in there, other times I don’t, should there be water in there? In this video I’ll explain how does a water softener brine tank work starting right now!
Whether you’re a first time do it yourselfer, plumber or water filtration specialist, this video is for you!!
It would be easier for you to understand the water softener brine tank if you know how a water softener works, in case you don’t, check out my RU-vid video here • How Does a Water Softe...
When you look at the parts of a water softener, the brine tank is where the salt is stored. If you have a two piece water softener, like our HUM Water Care Clack valved water softener waterestore.ca/products/hum-d... the brine is in a separate tank. But if you have a one piece water softener like this WaterBoss waterestore.ca/products/water... the media tank is inside the brine tank but they work the same.
Brine Tanks consist of these components:
Tank or reservoir to hold the salt and water
Brine well to keep the float separate from the salt
Brine float to add water and remove brine from the tank and shut off water coming from the water softener in case something malfunctions.
Overflow fitting can be connected to a drain in case the float ever malfunctions or the tank overfills.
Tubing to connect brine tank to Water Softener valve.
If your water softener is the post fill kind, whenever the water softener is in service (not regenerating) there will be water in the brine tank with the salt making brine. Pre fill water softeners, like the kind sold at Big Box stores have almost no water in the cabinet when in service. So it’s normal to not see any water in there until the regeneration cycle begins. This video explains the difference between pre and post fill softeners • WHICH WATER SOFTENER i...
Basically, the brine tank holds the salt and water to make brine. If yours is a post fill water softener the brine has already been made and once the regeneration cycle has completed the backwash cycle, the valve switches to brine (or brine draw) creating suction to draw all of the brine out of the brine tank.
Once the brine is gone and the media has been regenerated, a pre determined amount of water flows into the brine tank to absorb the salt to make brine for the next cycle. The float does not determine how much water is in the brine tank, only the limit of water. If the water softener were to malfunction and not shut off the flow of water to the brine tank the float would automatically shut off the water before it reaches the overflow.
A couple of things to keep in mind
1) Water Softener efficiency. High Efficiency water softeners, like AquaMaster and WaterBoss water softeners use very little salt per regeneration, so you will find very little water in the brine tank which is why the cabinet is so small.
2) Water Softener settings for the quantity of salt used per regeneration ultimately determines the water level. Hardness and capacity settings make sure your water is soft without wasting salt and water during the regeneration. Have your raw water tested for hardness, iron and manganese and put those settings into your water softener. From there your water softener will determine how much salt you need and then add the appropriate amount of water. For example, one gallon of water absorbs 3 lbs of salt. So if your water softener uses 9 lbs per regeneration the valve will pour 3 gallons of water in with the salt to make brine containing 9 lbs of salt.
3) If suddenly you have significantly more water in your brine tank than normal, your water softener is malfunctioning, and you better check out my Water Softener Troubleshooting video here • Water Softener Trouble...

After having regenerated water softener, it shows 1200 Gal, which is normal. But it is not winding down as house water is used. What did i do wrong? System is 4 years old. Hi Gary. Thanks for the great videos. Learned a lot about my Clack Valve water softener. Quick question...going on a 3 week vacation and typically when we're away I turn off the well pump as a safety precaution against flood should a pipe burst when I'm not home. My softener regenerates about every 8 days or so (average) . Obviously, the softener is going to regenerate after 14 days and hence it will not have any water (I turn the well pump off when away) to complete. In the past with lengthy absences, I've come back to lots of air in the system. Just wondering if this does the softener any harm? Would it be better if I just unplugged the softener when we're away that long? If so, would I have to reprogram the softener when I plug it back in? Advice appreciated. Thanks. Vince.

Hi Gary, appreciate all the water softener videos, the salt in our brine tank is low enough that the water is close to covering the top of the salt. It is working fine and I could just add more salt, but why couldn't it keep on regenerating normally until all the salt is used up before adding more?
@GarytheWaterGuy

Any water that is above the salt will not absorb any salt so every regeneration will have an insufficient amount of sodium in it to properly regenerate the media.

If it is just in the hot water it is hot water heater related. If everywhere, it is a problem with the float in the brine tank.

Thanks for the great content Gary! I have an AQUAPRO 5000 SXT and its square brine tank has a salt grid plate at the bottom. You mentioned that salt should be in contact with the water to efficiently produce brine. This grid plat creates a 4-5 inch space without salt between it and the bottom of the brine tank. Is this OK or would it be better to remove the salt grid plate? Is it needed because our brine well is completely hollow, having no bottom.

Sir - your videos have been among my favorite resources for water softener care - especially so for my clack ws1 control valve. I am thoroughly cleaning my brine tank, and when I removed the brine line from the tank elbow connector (screw type) I discovered the poly plug you referenced in this video. The lip of it was brittle and crumbled when I attempted to tug on it to remove from the brine line to clean. The remainder of it is still in the line: Should I leave it in, or should I replace it. And if I need to replace, where can I find one (I couldn't it on your website)? Thanks, -Doug

Hi Gary. Thanks for your videos. My question is: how does the brine get sucked from the salt tank towards the valve? Is there a suction pump somewhere?
@GarytheWaterGuy

Great question. There is an injector inside the valve which has a venturi built in. As water passes slowly through the injector in creates suction which is used to draw the brine from the brine tank. No pump.
@kristi739
@kristi739 2 года назад
@@GarytheWaterGuy Thanks for answering. I researched venturi effect: it seems that to create a venturi effect you need a driving force to create the suction which would be used to draw the brine. Am I correct?

Hi Gary - Can I ask whether or not it's a good idea to clean out the brine tank periodically? Also, I broke my overflow elbow off and I taped over the hole for now. I assume the inner part of the elbow in the tube could wedge the float and I'll be in trouble. I'll watch closely and disassemble/repair when the salt level lowers (I dunno)
@garypaul1033
@garypaul1033 Год назад
Hey I did the same thing & broke off that overflow elbow connector. But then then a leak developed at the valve of the media tank at about the same time. As I wasn't in a rush to repair it, I just lived with very hard water (iron and calcium) for a couple years. It was OK & everything works (toilets, faucets, etc) but I'm looking forward to having it operate again. I replaced two O-rings in the media valve connection, which were quite a pain because I could not get the media tank to line up properly. Finally after about 4 attempts to align the O-rings it worked and no more leaks! But I also broke off the overflow elbow port as you have done (I saw them listed for sale on line so you can likely buy one there if you want it. Mine has a 3/4" hole). But really, according to this video, if I understood it properly, there should be no reason for one becuase if the unit (specifically, if the brine well is working correctly there shouldn't be any overflow so I suppose it is sort of just for a mild overflow situation or works if there is a malfunction with the brine well). So I'm gonna clean the brine well and then fill it with salt (the tank is entirely empty of salt now that it all dissolved into the old water sitting in there for 2 years!). The whole brine tank is pretty clean after many years of use and it has a good very large filtering doughnut down at the bottom of the brine tank to help keep salt from clogging up the bottom of the brine well, I suppose. It's huge (same diameter as the whole large brine tank) so it seems to have done it's job. I'll test it out tomorrow.

What if salt tank is full I manual regenerate will see water come up float tube ?
@liamschubel4739

If I put the tube of a dehumidifier into the brine tank, would it overflow or would it trip something to drain it?
@GarytheWaterGuy
@GarytheWaterGuy 2 года назад
Don't do it! It will overflow because the float in the water softener just stops the flow coming into the brine tank.

@@GarytheWaterGuy - Just curious. The extra water I put in brine tank, should drain out eventually during the next cleaning cycles right? The float will just tell the system not to add any water, and instead remove it?

Can u please explain why salt level needs to be above water level? Ours, the water is always quite a bit higher then the salt, even when the brine is full of salt or getting low on salt, is there a chemical or scientific reason the water shouldn't be above the salt? And how can we fix the issue! We r still getting hard water stains and calcium build up in and on our fixtures. Could this be the cause?
@GarytheWaterGuy
@GarytheWaterGuy 2 года назад
great question! The water must be able to touch the salt to absorb it to get the correct concentration fo brine to regenerate the media in the water softener. All of the water above the salt is not touching the brine.

Please explain how the water softener creates a suction to get the brine from the brine tank into the resin tank.
@GarytheWaterGuy
@GarytheWaterGuy Год назад
There is an injector with a Venturi inside which creates the suction like in a carburetor as water passes through to the drain.

@@GarytheWaterGuy I know that. I was asking you to explain it in the video. I think that is worth mentioning. People are thinking there is a pump or something.

As long as it keeps salt from falling into the brine well it is okay.

how does one know the correct level for the float; my float is high just below the overflow hole? Tank water is almost to the overflow hole, this is not correct i believe. I have a post fill.

Your float is set correctly, it's only purpose is so that if something went wrong it would shut off the water to keep it from overflowing. If you water level is that high something else is wrong, check this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZdA0aI1q22w.html

The video doesn’t explain the most important part of the whole brine tank. That is, the ball valve at the bottom of the well. That’s where the magic is. Valve (on top of filter tank) pulls a vacc on the line for the whole brine cycle (which is long, like 60 min). It pulls until that ball valve closes (like 5-10 min). So the ball valve stops water and stops air from being pulled in. It might pull 3 gallons or 6. But it pulls for a lot longer time than any system needs. Then later it (filter valve) uses time calculation to fill above when that valve closes. The next cycle will pull exactly what it put in because it stops when that ball valve closes again. So it won’t drift. To set up, put enough water to be well over the bottom valve. Advance valve to the sucking brine cycle. Wait until water stops going down. Now advance valve to fill cycle. That’s the height you want. You can have salt in brine tank before or after. Which will change height. But that doesn’t matter. It will always pull until the valve closes and fill based on time. It typically fills at 0.5 gpm. 6 min is 3 gallons. If you don’t have OCD. Just put enough water above that bottom valve (4-6 inches). And run a full cycle. It will self adjust. You can do that with or without salt.

You must have iron in your water and it is oxidizing the iron out of your water.
