Watercolor Poppies - Drawing and painting

In this video I will be sharing my method of drawing and painting poppies. Right now, these are covering the hillsides with beauty and color.
I created and painted a couple different versions showing various angles of the poppies, including a few buds.
I have chosen to use mainly primary colors and allow the red and yellow to mix together to create a beautiful hue of orange that I couldn’t buy in a tube.
This is primarily a wet-in-wet technique aside from the first layer of petals wet on dry paper.
My paper today is a beautiful and thick 100% cotton paper by @arches, “rough” 140# watercolor paper, which has A LOT of texture and absorbs a lot of the water from my brush.
I would not recommend this for a beginner, as it can be a little tricky to get used to. I have provided a link below to the Arches 140# cold-pressed paper, which I typically use and is of great quality.
I am also helping the paint to blend by “pulling” the paint specifically in the petal I dab or dot in the red paint and then go back with a dryer brush with less water and help pull the paint into the yellow petal with the tip of my brush.
I thought it might be fun to make this little practice painting available for you in my Etsy shop!
You watched me paint it, and I priced it very attractively for you!
What fun, right? Your purchase will help me and YOU! What's included?
* painting from tutorial signed dated and tutorial episode name
* my pre-recording swatch I created with colors for reference (all handwritten)
* more pre-work, showing brushstrokes, descriptions
These are all my behind-the-scenes notes and prework.
Every painting is on different papers, depending on what I was teaching, different sizes, and meant for supporting you although can be framed as well as a fun piece!

I am using @Winsornewton paints in the following colors-
Cad yellow
Cad red

Paynes Gray
When you are ready, here are some supplies I use and suggest.
Good supplies will last you a long time when taken care of properly.

This is five months old, so Im doubtful anyone will see this, but you've inspired me to pick up my brushes and watercolors again after my dads passing. I made paintings for him. Its been a few years....thank you 🤗

Yes, It was one of my first videos when I started 5.5 months ago -ish. First, my condolences I can't imagine losing a parent. I'm happy that watercolors is a source of happiness for you. I'm sure there is a way to feature older videos again, but I have not figured that out as of yet. I'm curious how you came upon it? Trying to figure out how to keep some of my tutorials like this in front of everyone as I think these are helpful. Thanks for your thoughts.

Thank you for slowing down and taking the time to show me how you are using your brush. I am a total beginner and I have a really hard time following tutorials when the teacher moves their hands around really quickly, swoops and dabs their brush and calls it “easy”. You are a really good teacher. I can’t wait until summer when my own poppies are in bloom again.

Im so happy my teaching style supports you! I have felt the same. I do tend to say EASY! lol FAst moving hands around the screen and quick tips is sometimes very confusing when it is your first time learning them. Thank you and I hope I can continue to bring you helpful techniques and little watercolor tips to help you. Please let me know if you have something specific I can help you with or something you would like to see. Id love to share my free ebook with you as well. It is not only pretty and filled with my own watercolors but is a good reference for the brushstrokes I talk about. The link is here tr.ee/b5mjIs9fyF and also in the description above. See you soon, my new artist friend.

@@lanastehle9274 It's so important to find a teacher, or mentor that you can really connect with their teaching style (that's why there are so many of us out there). We all learn differently, and I found when I connected with their style of painting, and teaching style it made a huge difference. My goal is always to ensure that my students, especially when in-person workshops walk away feeling like they learned something, and grew a little, and my favorite is ALWAYS when they can't believe what they were able to create! That's my passion and the why of doing this I hope I can get you to those places. My goal this year is to figure out, learn how to create an online class. Fingers crossed that's a big goal for this "non-technical" woman!

I loved this tutorial. I find it very helpful for the artist to first show us how to draw the subject as I understand the importance of being able to draw your subject I love arches, but I love many of the 100% cotton rag watercolor papers and found the cheapest way to purchase is to get the full sheets (22x30) and then just cut them down to size. I wish I started out using 100% cotton as wood pulp paper only frustrated me. Often times I would think it was something I was doing wrong when my work looked nothing like the artists and found a lot of the problem was the paper I was working on. I feel it’s totally worth it to start out on 100% cotton paper and there are some that are cheaper than arches to do more practice on but helps since 100% cotton. I only use the real cheap stuff when swatching colors. Just wanted to share some issues I ran into when I first started out when it came to the paper which I find is the most important supply to spend money on over brushes and paint
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy Год назад
Absolutely Christine, I agree. I always share with students if they can only afford to upgrade one thing, make it your paper! Paper can make a huge difference. I have giant rolls I buy, and I Cut it also into different sizes to work on. I actually have that on my list for a project this weekend! (I ran out recently) I paint A LOT, obviously, so I do all I can to get the best paper and to do it in the most efficient, cost-saving way. I will mention that in an upcoming tutorial. Thank you Christine!
