I have been experimenting with granulation for the last month and I am in love! This video was super helpful. Thank you so much for doing this! It's so much fun!❤
Thank you so much for this video. I have hemmed and hawed about so many daniel smith colours and you have made some of my choices concrete. What a fantastic set of colours. I love blues and these are gorgeous, especially the sodalite and the teal, and i love the violet umber. i will definitely be investing in some of these. I already have a tube of mayan blue but have found it goes on very streaky. You have given me food for thought about different application methods, so hopefully this will resolve my problem as it's a really delicious hue
What a lovely collection of colors! Years ago, I thought granulation was a flaw in my paint, but now that I follow your wonderful advice, it’s a positive! Never miss one of your great videos.
😍 What beautiful and immediate texture! I use the Hematite Violet Genuine over non-granulating, lighter brown hues when going for a natural wood texture look, then before it dries I scratch sporadic lines into the area with a small dot tool and the deep pigment settles into the crevices and instantly creates a wood grain texture. The Sodalite Genuine makes some wonderfully moody deep greens when mixing with any deep yellow hue, especially Quinacridone Gold. Love it!! Thanks for sharing! 🙏😊 (Edit...) Speaking of using all the watercolor paper scraps, I take all my off-cut strips of paper, stack them up, and staple one end, then use them for swatching paper. The smaller booklets are easy to have accessible on your desk at all times and when one paper piece is used up, just tear it off and use the next one. Super handy and nothing goes to waste.
Wow, I enjoyed this video so much! I found the experimentation with and without Granulation Medium on cold pressed and hot pressed paper fascinating. All the colors are simply beautiful and now I want to buy them all! This is one of my very favorite videos, Jean. Thank you and I'd love to see more like this.
Thanks so much! Just LOVELY colors. I want them all! Maybe eventually. I have a lot of Mission Gold. And would like to incorporate Dan. Smith, and M. Graham granulating colors. Thanks for listing the Brands and colors. Happy New Year to you! - Messy Mendy 🍃🙏🏻🖌
I just love all these granulating colours and textures! I need to order a few of those paints and the granulating medium. Your abstract landscapes are some of my most favourite art of any channel. ❤
Love the look of your little landscape with moon. Sure wish I could take some classes with you. I want to learn the granulation technique. Thanks for sharing and your work is fantastic.
I have most of those colours but never thought of combining them in the manner you did so I am excited to try them out. As usual thanks for your great lessons.
I really prefer hot press paper so I’m delighted to see how you achieve these effects using the smoother texture paint surface. Daniel Smith watercolors make such wonderful pigments! I can see there’s going to be another trip to the art supply store soon!
You've made me very excited to try more granulating colors, and I think I have some granulation medium from years ago I have to hunt down and hope it's still good. This is super inspiring. Thanks!
Thank you. Very useful what wonderful effects on hot press paper. Always thought landscapes with rocks etc do better on cold press and it was hot press for details and botanicals. Apparently I was wrong😁
Thank you Jean. Fun to see the comparisons. I have most of the colors and I have to agree with you about all of them. I always enjoy your videos so much
I also love granulating watercolors. Maybe I am a little lazy, so I love to have the paint do some of the "painting" for me. Thank you for the review of some great granulating colors. Just in time for me to add a couple to my Santa List. Thank you so much for all of your great advice and lessons.
A really useful video, especially as you show the difference not just between salt and granulating medium, but also between hot and cold pressed. Thank you!
Thanks, Jean. I bet you had a lot of fun with this exercise. I have to admit, apart from the fabulous effect of the granulation, I couldn’t help but thinking about the ‘ch-ching’ 💰💰 effect as you went through your new colours!! Still, I’m very excited about adding these colours to my paint box. 😊 Also, it’s so interesting to see the differences on H/C pressed paper (I still can’t decide which paper I prefer working with.). I’ve never had much luck with salt. Time to invest in some granulating medium.
Thank you, Jean Lurssen, for such an interesting and helpful video. The granulating paints are gorgeous and I love the way you have used them in your little demo.
Wonderful tutorial...thank you. You should look into Rockwell paints both the "Charm" and Magic series for some extraordinary granulation effects...especially on hot press paper
Mayan blue dark is gorgeous! Maybe a close comparison would be to mix the Mayan blue you have with the genuine blue apatite. I read the info because some of my favorites say hazardous to aquatic life, something to think about. That is why I carefully look now.
Hi Jean, Today I got hold of some samples of Stonehenge watercolour paper, not and hot pressed, and experimented with the granulation medium. Either the granulation medium they sell in the US is a different make up to the one they sell in the UK, or your paper is part of the reason you get such great results on the hot pressed. I certainly get better results on the hot pressed, but still nothing like as good as you get. Perhaps the medium also reacts to the type of sizing on the paper?
Hi, I really love all of these colors! Thank you so much for the demonstration. What is the little tool that you used to "erase" the paint to create the moon in your painting?? Thank you! 🎨😍❤️
@@JeanLurssen Thank you so much. I thought it must be a scrubber but I hadn't seen one like that. I love your paintings and really enjoy your videos. 😊
I really love the painting and the granulation. I never knew much about this. I thought it was a flaw in my painting. I've got all those colors in my Amazon basket. Maybe I'll get a few now and the rest for Christmas. Which ones would you recommend first. I could see me using the gray titanium. The other colors are beautiful. Do you prefer the raw sienna in Windsor and Newton over Daniel Smith? Oops maybe I'm asking too many questions. Love the video.
I agree with Jean I prefer W&N raw sienna to the DS version ...but I've discovered DS raw sienna 'light' is very like the W&N raw sienna if you find it easier to get DS
That was very helpful Jean, do you add granulation medium together with paint on palette or when paint is on paper and drop it in, many thanks, blessings from Australia
Lovely painting and inspiring instruction! I’ve never thought to experimenting with granulating paints on hot press paper and can’t wait to try it! Also, what was the brush you used during the demo, specifically the one with the red tip on the bottom. It looked like it had a really nice spring to it.
Hi Jean, I have been doing some research on granulating medium and the type of water you have affects the way it works: hard or soft water. I am on very hard water from a well. I wonder if that is part of the reason I can't get the sort of results you get. Do you know if you have soft or hard water?
@@JeanLurssen I have just ordered some Arches hot pressed so it will be interesting to see what results I get. I will let you know. So many variables to watercolour aren't there!
WOW! What fun! You've just inspired me. I have a lot of these colors because I love Daniel Smith watercolors too. YOU certainly know how to use them. Thank you for the demo and great ideas. Now, I know what I'll be doing tomorrow : )
