There are several alternative ways of approaching Line and Wash. In this short video, Peter Woolley compares and contrasts two different methods. In the traditional, 'Urban Sketching' approach, the basic ink drawing comes first, while in the looser 'Fusion' method, it all kicks off with a loose, almost abstract watercolour wash...

It’s so helpful and at the same time I feel like watching a combination of a bbc documentary and a Bob Ross video ☺️ thank you Peter!!!

I like both. It strikes me that the second technique may be more effective once one is more experienced with water color alone. Great content!

Getting the building perspective is the hardest in my sketches, they always look flat
@seansixfive

Perhaps keep in mind linear perspective and atmospheric perspective. More detail in the focal point and less detail in the rest.

Loved this. I just did my first ever watercolour (at 67) a few days ago but I am drawn to this style. May I enquire what is the best paper for this technique? Thank you so much for sharing this
@peterwoolleyartist
@peterwoolleyartist 3 года назад
Since this is a collaboration between ink and watercolour, it needs to be done on watercolour paper - I use Saunders Waterford 200lbs, with a Rough surface (although some folks prefer a smooth - or 'Hot Pressed' surface for this technique). Thanks for the comment, and good luck with your watercolour journey, Rob!...

What was the grey colour you used at the beginning of the second demo? Thanks!
@peterwoolleyartist
@peterwoolleyartist 4 года назад
Hi Kate - My grey is mixed from French Ultramarine and Burnt Umber (start with the FU and add tiny amounts of BU at a time, and you'll see the two colours neutralise each other...) - I also like to drop in a small amount of Alizarin Crimson to warm it up slightly.

I’m new to watercolor and like your style of teaching. I’ve visited your website, and am trying to decide which method of learning is best for a raw beginner: 1) The DVD set Watercolour for Beginners, or 2) becoming an Online Member for an ongoing monthly fee. I’m looking for a step-by-step approach to learning the basics of watercolor painting. Thank you! Karen
@peterwoolleyartist
@peterwoolleyartist 4 года назад
Hi Karen, thanks for the comment. The two different choices suit different people - some folks like to have the physical discs, online membership is good for those who are happy streaming the demonstrations. For a full learning experience, featuring full-blown step-by-step instruction and one-to-one feedback, may I suggest you take a look at the 'Online Student' option, which is a little bit more a month than the member subs, but you could try it for, say, just three months to see how you get on with it, and then cancel it ir downgrade to a member option... however it suits you. A full 15-disc DVD set is also quite a comprehensive collection of material, presented in a logical, graded way. I hope that helps. Cheers, Peter
