I keep coming back to this video after a rainy day to remind myself about the Kuiu jacket. My favorite part is watching you struggle with the Arbortec and your helmet. It's much easier with all three zippers open.
Thanks Dan for that video. I’m looking for a solid jacket for ground work. But for climbing in heavy rain I highly recommend a Wahler stratos EBX overall. I don’t like it when my jacket moves up under my belt. And climbing with these rubber rain trousers? That’s nothing for me. The overall stays perfectly in place. It fits nice and tight with a good range of movement. That one’s made for industrial climbers. So you can wear a helmet under the hood. The material seems to be a solid cordura gore tex thing. It perfectly stops Wind, keeps me warm and as a quick sweatin guy I love the good working membrane. But yes this one needs some care or a refreshing from time to time. I do it once in a season. And yes wool power under it.
Every time you say descend on a rope, I have flashbacks of muddy water running down my arm. If the cuffs can keep the water out, it's worth the cost of that jacket.
My uncle from BC introduced me Kuiu after he used it for years on back country hunting trips. They're expensive but their gear is top notch. He also does SAR and has been complaining about the lack of hi vis options as well.
If you need hi Vis how about a road workers sleeveless vest to put over the top!?🤣🤣 Not that that's making it even more complicated or something to catch on branches 🤔
Arbortec orange one we had was very good, for working in heavy rain amd anow days in Estonia only thing that kept upper body dry even when i was up in the tree no worries from getting wet and i talk like heavy raim not that lousy little rain when mist people say end of the day nothing stoped us from working and couldn’t aay any bad word about arbortec
I have hummed and hahed about getting a decent rain jacket. I think you just sold me on the Kuiu. Total side note, but I'm geordie and when I came across your channel it took me longer than it should to figure out that you were not in the UK. It was not my finest moment when that particular penny dropped.
I use a paramo fuera smock, it’s water resistant but if it’s raining heavy I’m moving enough to keep warm that being wet isn’t an issue 😂 either way super breathable and any damage is just a stitch and a wash away from comfort again.
Cheers for the video Dan. It's a shame arb companies can't design a jacket as well as a hunting company, then we could have it in bright colours. Unfortunately a deal breaker for me, we have to have hi-vis. Was the helly Hansen that you wore a lot waterproof before it stated to wear out?
I think for the price the Helly was the best I’ve found. It was a medium weight in their range of jackets, not the really thin type but not the super stiff and heavy type
Thanks Dan I'll look them up and see if we can get them in the UK! I've see Rain Gear Pro being praised by August Hunikie. It's a Canadian make you might be able to sample one of those. Safe climbing 😁😁
$279 for the jacket? That is not bad considering it actually keeps you dry. I remember being forced to buy a $300 gortex uniform jacket as part of my uniform around 1999-2000 (back when $100 would fill a shopping cart with food at a supermarket) and that POS would keep you dry for about an hour until you were soaked through.
Thank you sir. I am currently on the market ( and have been for two weeks now) for a rain jacket for when I am climbing that can hold up to the daily life of an Arborist being that it has started to ran much more than the last decade in colorado on the front range when previously we had been in a drought situation and is flooding us every day now.I have about purchased a few now bu
My problem is I work in Australia and I don’t want to be warm underneath I want it to breathe, it doesn’t get very cold here in winter so you just end up sweating underneath and makes the jacket redundant..
I've got this, been running it for about 4 months now and it's the same as the other arbortec jackets, holds up for a few months but will need regular cleaning and recoating if you want it to stay waterproof.
Interesting that some people would prefer the hi-vis clown suits over earth tones that don’t attract bees and Bugz but awesome review regardless. I’d have bought the RGPro if it came in a different color due to their aggressive marketing. Appreciate an actual unbiased (hopefully) review 👍🏼👍🏼
I'm curious how a thin North Face windbreaker would fair if you treated it with NeverWet. Not for tree work obviously since it would wear off, but for hiking and the like.
I bought the raingearpro jacket because all the good reviews, pretty disappointed with it. Stiff, boxy, and the snap buttons come undone all day while working. I don’t wear it while climbing, only on the ground.
Very stiff, very boxy, restrictive. It’s hard to imagine any climber would give this jacket a glowing review. Maybe for gardeners or loggers it might be ok, but it still seems a stretch for anyone to say good
just take your normal gear or canvas jacket and soak it in silicone thinned down with naphtha. or wax your canvas jacket. waxed my canvas pants and they have been holding up well.
I’d rather be soking wet from the rain as soking wet from your own sweat when wearing those condomjackets 😅. Change clothes twice a day, and if that doesn’t cut it then an arborist should be at home…
