Wax Carving / Part 1: Making a basic ring with regular tools

I have made a wax carving series. In this series I will show you different types of waxes you can use to make jewelry. You can make a wax model and have it casted in silver or gold by a caster or off course cast it yourself. If you want to learn more about casting feel free to take a look at my Delft Clay casting series.
In this specific tutorial I will show you how you can make a basic ring out of wax and add some texture. I will share all kind of tips and tricks with you and I will even show you what not to do. As always by screwing up myself.
So I hope you will enjoy this mini series and I can get you enthousiastic about working with wax. It's a great way to make pieces of jewelry that are hard to make by hand. Don't have all the tools you need? The companies listed below would love to help you out. Best part: they even offered some great discount codes!
To end up, I would like to point out that all my videos are and will remain free. In return, it would be awesome if you could take the time to share my channel on your socials or with your metalsmithing friends. That's all. I think it's a privilege to create a community of people doing what I love most. So thank you so much for your support, it means the world to me.
Have a wonderful day,
Bregje

I recently received some wax kleen from Gesswein, which I am going to try shortly. I believe it should really smooth out the wax as well. Without the risk of melting it. I will get back to you on it!

You are absolutely correct that's a Caliper (that one's specifically a Vernier caliper because of the vernier scale that shows the measurement). The other item you use to take the edge off the inside of the ring is called a deburring tool (at least in the UK). Used by sheet metal workers as well as plumbers. I really enjoy these videos, thank you!!

I subscribed from watching "stardust" as I like her positive mindset and diligent skills mixed with artistic flair. You've started somthing I can really relate to. I love to carve and in New year I'll carve somthing in this plastic wax. My stones I'm committed to and have priority but I've time i just realised if I want to do it enough. I am a retired engineer who stumbled upon your video, the measuring tool that you use is Vernier caliper. Referred as "Vernier" or "caliper". In slang terms know as:- Measuring spanner. Very near. Accu wrench. Or a mixture of the above. The black and yellow sharp tool is referred to a deburring tool and once you have the handle the cutting tips can be purchased separately in a range of shapes.

Calipers is also the English word for that tool. At least here in the States and I've heard folks in the U.K. say that as well. I have been trying to find out what the name of this wax was called and eventually did (carving wax). I took a jewelry making class in Highschool all four years and my senior year made my mom a silver ring using lost wax casting. Ten years later I've gone to nearly every craft store asking about a tough blue wax used for lost wax casting and no one knew what I was talking about. Cool to see you can use a bastard file on the wax as well. I used some small steel tools with an alcohol lamp to heat the tools and melt wax away. Thanks for posting this it reminded me this wax does exist and now found the name! Edit: Forgot to ask does anyone know the name of the tool used for sizing rings? It was rod shaped with a taper increasing by ring size.

@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials
@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials 3 года назад
You can make a basic shape in wax and use it as a mold for casting. That way you can make designs that would be very difficult to make in silver or gold. You can use Delft clay casting for wax pieces that are a bit sturdier and get your pieces casted by a caster if they are delicate.
@ltsune
@ltsune 3 года назад
@@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials it just clicked now. I've never done casting before, but that makes complete sense. Thank you 😊
@therealvirginiawind
@therealvirginiawind 3 года назад
@@ltsune Casting is a lot of fun and doing the Delft clay casting is easy to get into. It's also a great way to use up scrap. I started with making castings from antique buttons. A fairly simple design is easiest, and once you're done you can use the castings in other pieces. I haven't tried casting a ring yet, but Bregje's demonstration makes it look doable.

I totally adore my biggest file, which I use for the smallest things. It's a vallorbe cut two flat handed file. It is the best. And a good set of needle files will make you happy over and over again. Feel free to check out the discount links I have posted underneath my videos. Maybe there is one for a supplier you like as well.

Internetsting. I always thought that it is hard to work with wax and you need alot of special tools!

Than I am glad you bumped into this tutorial, because it really isn’t. And it is such a nice way to figure out how your jewelry is going to look without using actual silver or gold.

Hi. I recently discovered your channel and I find it extremly helpful.Can I have a question for you?I d like to try making ring out of copper (yellow or regular one).Does they behave different upon using?I mean changing color or comething?

Hello Vincent, thank you so much for watching. Off course you can ask me a question. Copper can discolour while wearing it. You could always add some clear nailpolish on the inside of a ring to prevent the discoloration from affecting the skin.

I am based in the Netherlands, I ship it to a Dutch caster. If you google on casting silver or gold you should be able to find different casters.

Hi I have fallen down the youtube rabbit-hole a bit and ended up here, ended up watching the whole thing because it was quite calming and interesting. Can I ask though, if someone wanted to make something basic like just a plain ring with maybe some hammering effect, is there an easy way to figure out how much metal is needed? I was thinking I could try to submerge the wax ring it in water and measure the volume difference in ml? or is there an easier way. Or to flip it, if I wanted to make one that used up a specific amount of metal how can I figure out what dimensions the ring can/will be? Thanks

Thanks again for your video. As I said about a month ago, it was very helpful.. in case no one else told you the plumber's tool that you showed is called a deburring tool. I learned that when I bought one. I have just completed my first wax ring and tomorrow I will take it to the caster to make a silver model.

How do you make sure the wax is at a 90 degree angle at the top? I had trouble in my class and my teacher told me to use a square but I couldn’t figure it out! Thanks for the video :)

as this is a year old I might not get an answer but, how would you make a mold of this ring that can be used? wouldn't the indents you carved make it impossible to remove from the clay without ruining the mold?
@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials
@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials Год назад
That is a very good question. A ring that has a design that's too difficult to get out with Delft clay casting, or that is too fragile, can be sent to a caster. They use the lost wax casting technique. You can look up some videos on it. I don't do it because it would be way too expensive to buy all the equipment just for me, but it is a great technique.
