There’s nothing like an empty beach in the early morning to make you feel you’re the only person left on the earth. This was the perfect setting for this haunting old song-even with all the ambient noise from the ocean (sorry about that!). I have loved “Wayfaring Stranger” since I first heard it at a bluegrass jam years ago, and my love for it was recently reignited after completing The Last of Us 2 and hearing it sung by Ellie and Joel during the credits. Hope you enjoy this version!
The Last of Us series is so haunting and powerful--I encourage anyone who hasn't experienced it to seek it out. I'm grateful to Naughty Dog, the creators, for making this masterful game, and this song is my little tribute to it.

Reina del Cid is a singer songwriter and leader of the eponymous folk rock band based in Los Angeles and Minnesota. Her song-a-week video series, Sunday Mornings with Reina del Cid, has amassed a devoted and diverse following made up of everyone from jamheads to college students to white-haired intelligentsia. In 2011 she began collaborating with Toni Lindgren, who is the lead guitarist on all three of Del Cid’s albums, as well as a frequent and much beloved guest on the Sunday Morning videos. The Sunday Morning videos also feature a rotating cast of bandmates, special guests, and occasional random bystanders.

When my mother was in her 90s I sang this song to her…she looked at me with amazement in her eyes….asking me how I knew this song, she said that her brothers use to sing it when she was a small girl ❤I’m 68 years old now

This was my grandfather's favorite hymn. He was a farmer and civil war veteran who died in 1932. Thanks, Reina.

Thanks for a song that's very dear to me. In 2016, following the terrorist attack that killed 87 people in my city of Nice, France, the jazz festival was cancelled out of respect for the victims. That year, the festival's president should have been Melody Gardot. She came back for the 2017 edition, whose president was Herbie Hancock, and, on the occasion of a short memorial ceremony held on the opening day, gave us a stripped down rendition of "Wayfaring Stranger." Probably the most emotional moment of music in my life. So Reina, thanks for choosing that song which brings me solace. May you live in peace.

That song haunted me for years-was a freshman in High School, went to solo & ensemble contest, not knowing what to expect, extremely nervous-sang the parts going to see my mother & father backwards-knew what to expect the next year when I went & made division rating to advance on to district, regional, & state finals.

My favourite cover is Johnny Cash, but Reina expresses the feel of the song wonderfully and a nice touch sitting on the beach with just an acoustic. I checked other covers and Ed Shenanigan was near top of the list. Needless to say I’m no fan of Ed but I was totally unprepared for what I heard. It was like the heart of the song had been ripped out and thrown in the trash. I had to return to Reina, she rescued the heart and nursed it back to health.

Michael Parks sang this on the1969 TV pilot movie of "Then Came Bronson" with Bonnie Bedelia ! Actor Michael Parks also had albums out. Jim Bronson rode a Harley Davidson across country in the TV episodes. Episodes on The Daily Motion.

Excellent. I used to ride out on my bike to the beach to see the sunrise, being in S Fl and looking eastward it is hard to miss the rising sun. Or the occasional meteor shower in the early morning darkness. Now that time has passed the beach seems farther away and harder to get to, especially w hen the feels like temp is above 100 F. I never to took my guitar with me, hope you can put these moments in to a song or two. So drink it in....
