When Denmark and the USA met during the first round of the Men's Softball World Championship, they were playing for a playoff spot. Denmark jumped out to an early lead, ahead 4-0 by the middle of the fourth. There would be no mid-5th however as the USA posted up 12 in the bottom of the 4th, giving them the mercy rule win.
Though the power of the USA bats could not be denied, neither could the luck of Denmark's fielders, who truly were granted grace by the official scorers, walking out of the inning with just a single error on the books.
America's DP Erick Ochoa earned his spot with 4 RBIs off 2 doubles while 1B Matt Palazzo drove in a friend with his dinger that went so far out of the park Denmark's CF Simonsen didn't even bother to turn around.
Denmark scored two in the third and another pair in the fourth. Taking advantage of mistakes by team USA, both Valdemar Terkelsen and Anders Jorgensen were HBP to start the inning, a mistake that, temporarily, cleared both benches. With both men on and an out recorded, DP Julenon doubled to bring Terkelsen around. Jorgensen crossed over on a grounder by Svane when the SS recorded the 2nd out of the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Valdemar was back at the plate and swinging for the fences. His homer, deep over the left field wall, drove in 2B Holmelund who had singled to center.
The bottom of the inning started off simply enough, with a single by 2B Saenz. Davis then walked aboard before Lynch singled to center to bring Saenz around.
Cameron Schiller tripled down the line, another play that would be brought into question as chalk flew on the replay, and the left and center fielders were sent home.
Erick Ochoa doubled and Matt Palazzo drove him in with a homerun that broke the tie and pushed America ahead by two.
Ratliff and Nowaczyk hit back-to-back doubles before Mullins walked aboard. Saenz, up once again, singled, as before, and drove in Nowaczyk before Davis had the first out of the half inning.
Schiller walked aboard and Palazzo reached on that error before Ratliff finally flew out to end the inning with the USA up by 8.
