At this point I respect Arquette in terms of pro wrestling. All these years later, as basically an old man (I'm his age) he came back in to get himself into shape, train, learn the craft & actually get in the ring and do it. He had to do all of that because he simply wanted to....and it probably did have something to do w/ trying to "redeem" the WCW championship stuff, because he didn't HAVE to do any of this. He didn't. He must really love wrestling....
Also, during this time, while he was working in WCW, David Arquette quietly donated all of his earnings to the families of Brian Pillman, Owen Hart, and Darren 'Droz' Drozdoff. Truly a class act, looking out for "the boys" without patting himself on the back for doing so.
Have you seen the documentary about him wrestling? It's pretty scary. I feel bad for the guy. It was nice to see him do a few matches where people cheered him.
David showed up at a pancakes and piledrivers event during wrestlemania weekend in New Orleans last year. The entire crowd lost their shit. After the match he stuck around and took photos with everyone and was just the coolest. I wish him well in the indies.
@@evilubuntu9001 Tell that to the Africans still being sold as slaves to Saudi Arabia in 2019. Also, slavery in the Muslim world first developed out of the slavery practices of pre-Islamic Arabia. You can literally thank the Saudi's for the Arabian slave trade...
@@but_can_you_meme4056 You mean the Africans being sold by Lybians. Which is in Africa. Slavery in Saudi Arabia was stopped in the 1960s. They still have sex slaves though. Tell the whole truth next time please
Fun Fact, the Cruiserweight Title that Candido had was actually the Artist's. He changed is from its original form once he won it to match his outfit. It was painted purple, gold, and black.
Happy Independence Day, Brian, and thank you for yet another Classic PPV review. Fun fact: the German announce team for this show referred to David Arquette as Mr. Courteney Cox. 😄
Russo wanted somebody with a smaller nose than hhh to be champion. And as a comparison to the Rock, Scott Steiner was waiting for November to take the World Belt.
29:41 The tagline for the VHS cover; "Three Cages, Two Warriors, One Belt" is also another tie in to Ready to Rumble when Sinclair used the same line to introduce the Triple Cage.
I loved that The New Blood was supposed to be this young hungry underused group but Shane Douglas Buff Bagwell Finlay and Jeff Jarrett are members, and Bischoff and Russo are the leaders lol
@@num1Jaysta Im not saying they were old in age,but wrestling they werent exactly fresh faced Rookies. Bagwell wrestled since atleast 1990 in Texas The USWA He was the Handsome Stranger. Jarrett was wrestling since atleast the late 80s fighting Skandar Akbar and them in World Class.
Hogan could wrestle when he had too. His match in Japan with Stan Hanson is a perfect example of how Hogan could really work a hard athletic physical style.
@Poc Why would that be a problem? Hogan got paid the most amount of money taking the least amount of bumps. And he still had to get plenty of surgeries because of his wrestling career. How could you reasonably fault a guy for not bumping around more just because you're not satisfied with his work? It's his body taking a toll, not yours.
The fact that the new blood were booked as heels and not vice versa is mind blowing! These PPVs show the real picture of WCW booking under Russo...and it confirms to some extent what Jim Cornette meant when he said ppl with no knowledge of the wrestling business were given that kind of power.
@@williamfryman4360 Didn't seem like the New Blood were booked as faces. The attack and deception on Flair after his match isn't what faces do. Russo and Bischoff were leading the group and Eric was the heel ref in the Hogan match.
McMahon's juiced to the gills so he at least looks like he can fight. There's a reason people complain less about McMahon winning titles than Russo and Arquette.
Jon I McMahon took a double quad tear and barely sold on his face, yeah he couldn’t stand but that was physically impossible. Vince could’ve won against a lot of guys on just his insane willpower alone. And horse testosterone.
Johan Smallberries to add to what you said he’s a maniac in a very strong willed way, he never sneezes in front of anyone from many other wrestlers and writers with stories, I think Bruce Prichard talked about it, he also keeps a razor in his suitcase he never has a hair on his face.
The Main Event Mafia makes way more sense now. It was a rehash of the Millionaires Club, though they made the more intelligent choice of being the Heels this time around. The New Blood could have made the copycat thing part of their gimmick. They're newer and better than each of the old guard they're copying/replacing. What was terrible about the powerbomb? It looked good to me, if a little low angle. Kidman vs Hogan shows they had some trust in him. Ready to Rumble is also Cena's first on-screen appearance.
The Main Event Mafia weren't truly heels though. Their competition was a bunch of smaller X-Division geeks. Kurt Angle was the only real heel of the MEM.
@@quentinkaasa47 I dunno. I think Sting was the only one who kind of still had some face tendencies. Not surprised as he is a natural face IMO. The rest were heelish enough I thought
@@quentinkaasa47Yeah Fans Weren’t Going To Boo Tge MAIN Event Mafia Legends Over A Bunch Of TNA Originals Vanillla Midgets And Fans Weren’t Giung To Boo The Millionaire’s Club Over Guys Who Had To Prove Themselves & Weren’t Held Back by The Old Guys Because WCW Never Pushed Wrestlers All The Way Before They Ready
It took me a while too. I kept laughing at his name change and then one of the announcers had mention his previous name and that's when I realized that I was laughing at some dumb shit lol
the rare occasion that I would watch WCW back in the year 2000, was usually because of Norman and Ralphus. I loved the skit where they went to a backyard wrestling show and stole the backyard championship
Dude I wanted a hell in a cell so bad back then. Have you seen those crazy $200 toy rings they have now? Man I'm a 30 year old man, but ain't afraid to say that I think it is so damn cool and a part of me wants that damn thing.
@@2RG_ I remember the internet was just getting popular and me and my buddy used to look at this one guy's custom arenas and figures. They were the coolest things ever.
Some people dont have the balls to do what they love with a passion in life and Arquette clearly genuinely loves pro wrestling and has done for years. He hasnt even let that deathmatch scare put him off. He's doing it out of pure love and I have nothing but respect for the guy.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about that AMAZING Poster for Slamboree that got people hyped for the event that featured....Buff Bagwell making a kissy face against a grey backdrop. Yeah, that's gonna put butts in the seats.
I just saw that, even if I was a wrestling fan, I would just assume that Buff Bagwell was trying his hand at being a male model, I wouldn't assume that it was an attempt to sell tickets for a PPV. I don't even loathe Buff like others do, but that's still daft as fuck that WCW saw that poster and were like 'Yeah, this is a winner!'; it makes you wonder how bad the others were if the 'Buff is seducing you' one was the best one?
I remember getting tickets to Spring Stampede 2000 and being excited for the original card but then it got changed to what the event was. Thanks Bischoff and Russo
A lot of people think Kidman vs Hogan could never have worked, but I think it could have if done right. The way Kidman vs Hogan could have worked, setting aside everything else going on and just focusing on the two of them, is making Kidman an underdog. He wins with a school boy or similar against an arrogant, dismissive Hogan in the first match. Survives a horrific beating in a second match, which hopefully makes the crowd feel sorry for him. He loses, but has a Dreamer "thank you sir, may I have another" moment. Again, hopefully this gets everyone rooting for him. A third match is set up after Hogan is repeatedly questioned on why it took so long to beat Kidman in the second match. Kidman wins the third match.
The Kidman feud was just an extension of Hogan's story with Bischoff. Kidman was never going to continue getting a big push since he was way too small.
Ronit Banerjea short version of the story (if I’m remembering correctly) - Lugar and Elizabeth were in a relationship in real life but Elizabeth died due to drugs as I think they were both dabbling at the time. You can Google it for the full story.
This is probably one of the few times that wouldn't be humorously true. This era of WCW was far worse than WWE's current product. Everything about the Russo era of WCW just felt wrong and stupid - salaciousness just for the sake of being salacious, poor match quality in nearly every instance, unnecessary swerves, storylines abruptly dropped out of nowhere, constant title changes that devalued ALL of the championships, and seemingly an intent to insult both the wrestlers and the fans. It's like everything that made the WWF's Attittude Era stand out, but done with a sense of desperation, a lack of care for anything, and done after the Attittude Era approach was becoming old hat.
@@glennwelsh9784 This era of WCW is far worse than WWE's current product? Idk dude both have done a phenomenal job of alienating its core fan base WCW's ratings at this time were actually quite good probably better than WWE's 750k turning the channel during the last hour of Raw. Both era's are marred by poor TV and creative. Both era's insulted the intelligence of the fans.
WCW in its dying years was an absolute mess, and it showed. Every time I see these events covered, I'm always reminded of why I stopped watching WCW at the time. It was clear they were losing the war, and there was no way in hell they were ever gonna win it ever. It was truly sad to watch. So I could not disagree more that WCW in its dying days was better than the current WWE for as bad as that is.
@@SaviorGabriel Yeah in all honesty idk really, both were/are alienating their core fan base with nonsense. WWE have no heart and soul these days and WCW then although it gave lower/mid card talent a chance to succeed it was still a clusterfuck of bullshit. Still its curious to note that WCW's ratings were pretty good back then compared to WWE's major issues with ratings these days and record numbers changing the channel.
@Big Al lol well I had to grow fond of WCW because after the suck it campaign that went on in WWF at that time circulated through the neighborhood narc parents, I got banned from WWF. Still watched of course, but had to be sneaky.
Even Vince Russo has to be beneath having Kanyon thrown off the triple cage. This was reminiscent of what happened to Owen Hart the year prior IN THE SAME ARENA THIS PPV TOOK PLACE!!! But I guess I shouldn't be surprised. After all, it's Vince Russo we're talking about.
The Millionaire’s Club *ended up* being the faces because despite what the internet thought, Kidman, Big Veto, and Vampiro weren’t actually more over with the fans than Hulk Hogan, Lex Luger, and Sting. The crowd made the New Blood the heels, not WCW.
This. There is reason why guys like Hogan and Flair were on top for so long - the fans loved watching them for the most part even when they were heels.
yoshi6500 Yes and wrestling in 2 rings would be awesome. And there’s so many other types of matches that they can add like: •I Quit Match •Mixed Tag Team Match •Lumberjack Match •Special Guest Referee Match •Ambulance Match Even the classic type of matches like Inferno Match,Buried Alive Match,Casket Match & 3 Stages of Hell Match.
@@WWENHLMTL Didnt they have an I quit match a few years back and an ambulance match was on the DS version. They got rid of Special guest referee match type? They had inferno match in 2011. A lot of these match types were in past games...why not put them back in?
Arquette doesn't deserve the shit he gets to this very day, it's literally absolutely everyone else around him that does. He was the only dude in the entire situation that knew enough to know it should have never been done ever. I'm pretty sure part of his money also went to Droz, as this wasn't very long after Droz's horrible accident. Probably the thing that bothers me most of all is that DDP lost the title to him in 1) a tag match in which 2) they were freaking partners and he's just totally cool with it. WCW. Also, thank you for a wonderful Legends of the Hidden Temple reference.
Hearing about New Blood vs. Millionaires Club makes me realize, I'd love to see Brian do a video on TNA's "Main Event Mafia" storyline. Because talk about a potentially good idea undercut by crap execution, especially the "war" with the TNA Frontline.
I remember something about Sting and vampiro having legitimate heat with each other because sting apparently felt vampiro was a "poor man's sting" or something Sting apparently didn't want to work with vampiro hence the somewhat poor matches
Hope you have a happy and fun 4th Brian! Thanks for doing these classic PPV reviews each week they're so fun to relive and study. I wish WWE had competition now like they used to when ECW and WCW were alive.
"It turns out, it was Tony Schiavone that pitched the idea." Hey, Tony said he pitched it as a joke. It wasn't his fault the idiot couldn't tell what was serious.
Using a move is not the same as stealing a gimmick. The idea in using a move is if you win, you have humiliated the opponent by showing you can do their move better.
Man! Ralphus! That takes me back. What a gimmick Jericho was pulling off back then! I loved Jericho in WCW and look what he went on to become! He is a beast and turkey a GOAT of wrestling!
The problem with the New Blood storyline (and pretty much WCW) was it came too late. They didn't keep their New Blood that they built up and they had to use guys that weren't ready for the top spots.
Please continue doing more WCW circa 1999-2000. Not really "classic" ppv's in the true sense of the word - more like infamous. But your content on WCW is always gold. Keep them coming!!
One of my favorite Ric Flair moments! Now I love Shane Douglas and the original ECW but what Ric Flair says to him before the match is great. "I'm gonna kick your ECW ass!" Glad you brought that, Mr. Zane, because if you didn't I would have in this comment. Lol. Thank you!
Zane’s WCW reviews are always elite and full of good information and research. Keep it up man. Hope you thrive in ROH and more opportunities arise for you.
WCW 2000 deserves its on segment/review on your show Brian Also had David Arquette won the WCW Title now with these so-called wrestling fans watching, he would've been massively over, dont think so? Then Ive got one thing to say to you: 10 Year Old kid and Braun Strowman at Wrestlemania
As per Curt Henning's double singlet. I would juxtapose that, due to the match concept but, with trademarked legalities involved, the veteran professional added that extra touch to help tell the story.
The match story was passing the perfect angle on to new talent. Curt Henning couldn't bill himself as Mr. Perfect in WCW. It would not surprise me if WWF/E owned the image of Henning in his Mr. Perfect singlet. Wearing his perfect singlet under his new WCW Singlet, implies, but does not present, his perfect image, as the veteran puts over the younger talent. Did I clear that up for everyone?

Not only was this almost a year to the day of Owen's death, in the Kemper Arena, BUT, if that wasn't weird enough, this took place on Owen's 35th Birthday! He was born May 7, 1965, & died on May 23, 1999...Owen just turned 34 years old, 16 days before his death...& this took place May 7, 2000! R.I.P. KING OF HARTS "OJE"🇨🇦💖🇨🇦
And I'm "not" sorry, but that STUPID FUCKING SPOT with the guy getting thrown off the damn cage was in such HORRIBLE FUCKING TASTE, it's ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not in the same building where a fellow Wrestler (actually one of the most beloved guys in the locker room IN HISTORY) was just dropped accidentally to his death, & it's the guys FRIGGEN Birthday on top of it all!?
