WD21 Pathfinder Overland Expedition Build Intro and first drive (Ep 1)

In this episode we recap the former E350 Ford V10 camper van build briefly, then talk about the new build with the Pathfinder WD21 1st gen. This 1992 Nissan Pathfinder WD21 is 4wd, LSD rear end, rear disc, optional rear carrier and roof rack, with side bars. We picked this up for a great deal and look forward to adding roof rack, lighting, amenities and other details.
In the next video we will be doing the first stage of the build, which will include some cleanup, some lighting mods and the roof rack, be sure to catch that.

The WD21 pathfinder is a great design from a great era of competition between Toyota and Nissan. I love the 4runner but I have to admit, I'm quite happy with the 90's era flares of the hardbody design, the manual gearbox and the overall reliability of 90's Japanese vehicles....they're the best.

I started filming a lot of my automotive life starting back in 2008, but I have footage back to 2001 at very random moments. There's definitely no regrets in capturing beyond photo. I had a wedding and event videography company in the late 00's. I'd have clients with weddings who would pay 2500 for photgraphy, tons for a DJ, a venue, etc...and then debate over video. I'm like...this allows you to truly RELIVE that day...see all of what you missed in the moment, or remember how you felt...video man...always. Capture video and transfer it to a pc/harddrive or dedicated place that you won't lose it. In 10yrs...you'll thank yourself.

Sniff, Sniff. I miss my 95 4wd, it's in the driveway with a blown up engine. It made it to just under 300,000 miles, & my son let it get hot and blew the engine in it. It looks just like your, except it has cloth interior. Now it sits in the driveway collecting dust until I decide what to do with it. Guess I'll just have to use the F350 7.3L 4wd instead. @@harrybusche6551 I daily a 95 with a small lift and it was a little harsh before I swapped in Rancho RS5000 shocks. Good quality shocks is the key imo.

Very nice! I just bought a 1990 Pathfinder SE. It's a one owner (single female) garage find from AZ with 51,000 original miles. It has spent it's entire life in AZ and always garage kept so no rust anywhere ever. Nearly perfect inside and out. Hasn't been started in a few years so I had it towed. In the shop now having all fluids changed, gas tank cleaned out, new timing belt etc. I have every maintenance record from day one including the original window sticker and check used to purchase the vehicle. I was going to flip it but now having second thoughts about that. Not sure if I should built it out or not. I have a Toyota Sequoia 4X4 but it's a little big to have a lot of off road fun in. Can't wait to get this thing back on the road.

Wow, thats sounds like a nice ride. Hope it works out. Vehicles sitting long term can be a real can of worms but, gotta be a clean truck for sure. I love this thing off road, incredibly capable. I am doing a big vid on off road and overlanding here, as we speak. Lots ahead.

Really! I was pretty intrigued by it. It screws in with special clips and retainers so I was pretty impressed it was there. I assume most got tossed over the yrs. I guess thats the nature of a vehicle that lives its live in vegas....no one wants that sun beating on them...lol.

Sweet man. Yeah, youtube needs a few decent vids for this older pathfinder platform. I intend to make a few for good search value then embark on the build aspect and do some epic off road explorations to ghost towns and some abandoned stuff, great nature places, etc. I also do some on road Corvette stuff on my other vids. These are cool vehicles! One thing to note, some of the window trim in the backside windows is manufacture discontinued, so take care of it, and keep lathering on stuff to keep the trim soft and uv protected. I hear there's an aftermarket source somewhere.

Yeah, I am ready to hit the snowy mountains of Las Vegas this winter. Our van was 2wd last yr and we didnt have chains. This winter we gonna be ready.

KnightDriveTV how do you feel with the torsion bars? I know second gens ex that option for traditional front coil/shock, do you plan on cranking on them and fitting heavy duty ball joints with longer upper arms?

I'm not going to go much on the lift side. I want to retain mpg and highway manners because that's 75% of the vehicles life. I'm looking at a T bar crank with some longer dampers and doing the rear spring from the Jeep Grand Cherokee (iirc). 31's with a bit more height should theoretically cover most ground out here. Seems going with a small crank can avoid the longer arms but we'll see. I have some things in the works...just took a brief video pause to move and get some work done. Lots more coming on both the Pathfinder and the Corvettes.

It’s good to b able to see something and get some decent info on this model. Mine is exactly the same colour and model except mines the 3.0 and not the wd21 I don’t have roof racks scrub bars or the sunroof, but I intend on following ur build on it as I would to do on mine and maybe get a few ideas. So I’ll b following u while u get this beast done. I’m in Australia so ur reach has gone far and wide. I look forward to the rest of ur vids 👍🏼 cheers guys

I'm happy for you two. Coincidentally I'm looking into a '93 pathy with 120k. Red exterior/red interior. If it's generally rust free. I don't think I can pass up. $4500 though!

I just picked up a grey one with red interior 110k miles for 2400 and only light surface rust. I consider myself very lucky! I hope you are able to get into one, they are fantastic vehicles!

I got my WD21 in January of 19 for 1,700USD. These are hands down the best value in 4x4, and one of the best options at any price.

Thats awesome. I really HAVE to do an update video here shortly. I couldnt agree more. I have pushed this truck quite a bit out here in the nevada mountains. There is a facebook recovery group for stuck off roaders. This Pathfinder at stock ride height on 31s with the rear LSD routinely gets through places I see all kinds of bigger, more capable looking teucks getting stuck in. The pathfinders short front and rear overhangs, shorter wheelbase vs modern equipment and high breakaway tq rear LSD saves me from getting stuck when twisted and lifting tires at both ends. My gf is always impressed when she sees guys on 35s in big trucks or Jeeps getting jammed in places we had gone through. A lot of it is driver error as well but...this Pathfinder is damn impressive and way more stock capable that my older 4runner was.

Will be sure to watch the next video if they got the WD21!! Great vehicle, looks really clean!!! I've now got two myself & very likely selling one (my 1992 :'( ) soon to potentially up-size, funny, opposite of you guys, to a 4x4 van or other. Would love to know the details of the roof rack you're going to install, would really give me a lot to reference as im often camping with out one, but a roof rack ive yet to get would really wrap it together. Excited to see your pathy again!!! New sub

We really would've loved to do a quigley 4x4 setup on the van, but we occasionally need to use the vehicle for daily use and mpg became an issue with the Ford (avg 13). I'm also not a mega fan of the Ford modular engines...I got semi comfortable with them, but the packaging on the V10 was ROUGH. I love 90's Japanese...toyota, nissan, mitsubishi... suzuki even...I just loved them. I had two hardbody pickups in the past, as well as a beasted out 1g 4runner...this Nissan came up and knew we had to grab it. Thanks for the sub, vids definitely comin. I post some Corvette stuff too, intermixed... Thanks man!

I own a 1995 WD21 Pathfinder with the LSD drive train and 4 wheel drive, I love this vehicle! I'm looking to start upgrading the engine, do you have any suggestions?

I was looking at the same. The first gen Xterra 3.3's apparently are the same engine architecture. I know they had a supercharged Xterra, so I imagine that's an option. Personally, I'd like to smack a diesel in here.

No lift, 31x10.5's. Have flexed it all the way, no rubs, no issues. Stock size on the lego wheels as far as I can tell. Does damn well off road.

The QX4 is a unibody construction vehicle, vs a body on frame truck, but if you have a 4wd version of the QX4, you could definitely make an overland rig out of it.
