The WD40 was originally designed by Mark Engler. Word on the street says that he designed this while working in a fly shop in the west. He made a pattern that was relatively easy to tie, and worked well in small sizes, which was what was needed on these small fly streams. This fly became so popular at his local fly shop, that he could not keep up with the demand of tying it. So the shop quickly turned to others to tie this fly, and instantly the fly became a world wide success, stocked in all fly shops in the United States, and later the world.
So word on the street might not be all that accurate. I have been told since making this video that the real name came from him saying it gave him wet dreams or something to the extent, and that he would catch 40+ fish a day on it. But... Who really knows exactly! Its like the telephone game, things change as time goes on. HAHA
Also this is a variation in a way. I like adding wire ribbing, but the original was tied on a straight hook and without wire. Also, I tie mine with a longer than normal tail, I find I will get more strikes in my river system, but feel free to shorten up the tail if you like.
So this fly originally uses Wood Duck (the W.D. part of the name). However, wood duck is very expensive for a small amount of it. Also I find that the pattern on it is finer, and softer than Mallard Flank. So I use the less expensive and easier to find mallard flank for this fly. Not only is it more readily available and less expensive than wood duck, it also comes in a wider range of colors. For this specific fly I used the one died to look like wood duck, however you can find this in gray, brown, olive, yellow, exc. The list goes on and on. These range of colors allow you to tie this fly in many colors to mimic your local bug species.
So as always I am listing the materials I used on this fly. I am also putting links to www.flyartist.com and a discount code for you to get them at a better price. The discount code is McFlySubs, and you can use it to get a discount at checkout.

I've never fished a WD40 but I really like the shape and profile. Looks like a hybrid midge/mayfly/larva/pupa. I like it! Thanks for the tutorial.

Glad to help. Yeah tied in black (and small) it can mimic a midge. Brown, olive etc can mimic a baetis, and even seen people tie it in crazy colors to use as an attractor. Really it’s very versatile. It works well from size 12-26. So it can match the hatch of many types of bugs.

Big Papi it's like a top secret midge. They're good tailwater flies.

Thanks! Yeah they are fairly easy and effective. I can usually get 20+ done in an hour.

Very nice fly, I always enjoy your videos !! I will be tying nothing but crab patterns next week, redfish is the target species.

Thanks Stew! Yeah crabs man! I hate tying crabs. I mean I love them, and hate them! Fun to tie, just take so dang long! I havent ever found a very effective and quick crab tie. However one trick, its kinda sneaky though... Is that you take the little gulp bait crabs. They are a rubber lure made for conventional fisherman, but they are small enough and light enough for 6-8wt rods. And just put it on a hook. LOL Cheating I know! But it works! Ive even tied on a bit of a tail as well on the tail end of my hook, then slide the bait over that before tying on. It works... But is kinda cheating.

The WD actually stands for "Wet Dream", because when Mark first started fishing it, the results were about the same. For the OG: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u1vBpv45qks.html

Its amazing how stories get told different as time goes on. See Ive always heard it stood for wood duck, and even heard that the 40 stood for that he could tie 40 of them in an hour. Of course you guys would know, since (I could be wrong about this) that he worked for you guys for many years? Hopefully that story was true. HAHA Interesting to see him use that hook. A straight shank is not one you see often with the WD40 in recent years. Ive always tied it, and seen people tie it, with a curved hook, like a scud hook. Thanks for sharing! :) How is Andy doing? I havent chatted with him in a while. Hope all is well down at duranglers.

Hey man, awesome fly! What time of year do you usually prefer to fish this fly?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 6 лет назад
That depends on the river. Tail waters it works most all year. Free flowing, any time you think fish will eat nymphs. (Mostly any time you fish). Haha

McFly Angler Thanks man, been looking to try this fly out for a while. I like your video on how to tie it better than most. Can't wait for the video on the 30th!

Thanks! Yeah give this fly a try. It’s a good all arounder. Being an all around type fly means, it will generally work in almost all situations. However it might not be the very best that situation, but will work. It’s a good pattern to have in your box. And if you don’t have a particular fly to mimic a specific bug, throw this on and it will do the job.

Great little bug. I like to add the WD40 behind a soft hackle or run it with a Zebra midge.

I like even making it a flashback WD 40. It sure makes a difference in my opinion, but it is an extra step however.

By the way great substitute with the mallard flank. Wood duck can sure get expensive for over a dollar a feather. The reason why I think wood duck is expensive is that it's kind of hard to find and to find someone who raises them has to have a permit.
@rubencorona212
@rubencorona212 6 лет назад
sithlord maul they're kinda hard to hunt for. They're elusive and stay in the timber. Hence the name.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 6 лет назад
Not sure why they are expensive, but yes they are. As for flashback WD40’s, yeah it’s nice at times. I prefer a flashback pheasant tail though for the more flashy nymphs. But that’s just personal preference
