Hares Ear NYMPH - With a Pheasant Tail - McFly Angler Fly Tying Tutorial

The hares ear is a fly that has been around for ages, however its still as effective today as it was over a century ago. The simplicity is really what makes this fly so popular. Its very easy to tie with a very small amount of materials, yet still comes out looking amazing!
No one really knows where this fly comes from or who originated it. However we do know that it’s been around since the 1800’s, so it’s a seasoned fly.
More frequently you see these tied with a tail made of rabbit fur. They would clip a small clump, tie that in at the tail, then dub the body, then tie in a section of turkey wing or pheasant tail fibers for the wing case. I find using the Pheasant tail to start with at the tail negates an extra step, so its much easier and quicker to tie. Also I think it looks better as well, and for me fishes a bit better. So its a win win.
Not only is this fly easy to tie, but it also looks really good. Its really cool that you are using the same dubbing throughout to create the abdomen and the thorax, but dubbed in different degree's of tightness to create a different look. The abdomen when dubbed tightly really does have the perfect "bugginess" look to it. And the thorax when dubbed loose will be perfect for looking like legs of nymph. This is really one of my favorite nymphs to fill a box with because its not only effective, looks great, and can be tied to mimic a wide variety of bug species, its very easy and quick to tie, and I can fill a box in a matter of a few hours. It also looks equally as nice with a bead head, and as different sizes as well. Heck, for really small ones try tying with a finer dubbing.
Speaking of a wide variety of bug species, these are more than likely made to mimic baetis or mayflies, however I know they can mimic caddis as well. Some people even tie these with slight alterations to look like stoneflies. They are very versatile.

Thanks! Yeah, the UV resin can be substituted with just regular old head cement. Might not look quite the same, but it will still help give a little glossiness to it...

No. I use the pheasant tail, but I was cutting the extra off and getting a separate piece to make the wing case. Great idea to just tie it forward and then use it to make the wing case. I also think I will try using UV resin to make it stronger. Just a word of encouragement - I think the quality of your tying videos is really good and getting better. It isn't easy to just sit down and produce a video that is firing on all cylinders.

Liked and subscribed! I have been watching many of your videos over the last day. Your video quality is exceptional compared to earlier videos, a good mic set up for nice audio, close in video for capturing fine details, perfect amount of narration and back ground music. I prefer narration over mute videos that only have music playing. Thanks for great video production. What brand is the fly vice? So on lakes, you can nymph, and it can be quite productive. Grab an indicator, make sure it’s about at the depth you want to fish, then cast out and sit and wait. Maybe twitch the line a few times here and there. Many times trout will hit nymphs in lakes. In fact I have a video coming out today of me fishing a lake. I caught a few good sized rainbows on this pattern, and also got some on streamer and dry fly.

Just wanted to check about beadhead...do you recommend it for this fly as it looks so good without and if not do you prefer to use lead thread or simply a split shot? Was concerned the bead would take away from the great thorax look. Thanks. Gregg

I’ve tied many times with a bead also. Like I said just use a 2x long nymph hook. But yeah it’s definitely a bit different looking. Try it both ways and see which you like best. Lead wire is another way to get the fly down deep without adding beads for sure. But make sure you don’t go too deep into the hook shank with the lead or it will cause it to bulk up towards the rear of the fly and will effect the taper.

I use wooduck, normally, and the standard turkey for the wing case. But I'm going to tie your version. I think it will fish better and it looks good to me, which is what our goal is always, ha!

lol yes, actually my main reason for tying this way is speed. Don’t need to prepare 2 sets of materials, it’s just one... so it’s quicker. I like speed with workhorse flies like this. Lol

Btw, the wooduck sounds nice! Ive never tried it for this pattern, but I like the look of a wood duck tail on other patterns. I might have to give yours a try, and tie up a few to see how they come out.

Nice job. Teach me....I would assume the fly will sink ok without lead or a tungsten bead? Does it have a hard time sinking? I would like to tie more flies without all the weight.

Thanks! I generally will fish an unweighted fly behind a weighted fly to get it down. But in really slow moving water yes it can sink.
