It took me a long time to appreciate hip hop. It started with a guy calling me out when I said it sucked. He told me to look at Gil Scott Heron and follow the trail of how hip hop evolved until I found stuff I liked. Oddly, I got into Em and DOOM and then I got into the stuff I thought I didn't like at all. It's weird how finding an appreciation and more importantly an UNDERSTANDING of a sound changes how you see stuff.
Lmao, you had me crying at the Megadeth part. They're actually my favorite of the big 4, Slayer being my 2nd. But I can't hold your opinion against you because they're really not for everyone. I agree with you 100% about how Dave Mustaine has been acting in recent years. He's become a right wing, Christian asshole. He's not the Dave I grew up with that wrote songs like "Holy Wars" or "Wake Up Dead." Megadeth sucks now, but as far as their past work goes they're probably my favorite thrash metal band.
I've found I can only listen to certain genres of music, hip hop is the main one. I've tried to be open minded and listen to other stuff but I just can't do it. It's obvious your passion for hip hop has dwindled, I only have to go back to some of the old reviews to see the difference.
My first metal band that I fell in love with was Megadeth. And yeah, I've heard Symphony of Destruction as a 13 yo kid, and liked it, even the vocals. Idk, I was weird from the start I guess. But let's put memories aside, I still think that RIP is one of the best metal albums ever recorded, not just the best thrash album. It just have those boldly composed riffs and sinister pre-apocalyptic atmosphere through the whole album and Dave sounds like one of those lunatics we see in the movies that yells about conspiracies and shit. A very few metal bands is capable of creating that "additional dimension" on their records, I know there are bands that falls in genres that even have a 'atmospheric' in the name, but they most often go by the formula, so you enjoy what they create, but it doesn't leave as strong and long-term impression as the above mentioned band. Also Metallica did that well on Justice, smashing that hammer of justice on our heads (and ears) but not as strong as Megadeth on RIP. Slayer gives you an urge to kill/smash/destroy/burn etc. so music is kinda dumb and it stay on that level, as most of thrash bands do. Anthrax has some good albums and songs, nothing that special about them imo. And don't get me wrong, I'm not some kid who discovered doom or black metal after years of listening to thrash, it's not about the atmosphere which genre disposes, it's about the uniqness of the feeling you get from listening to it.
Myke, no disrespect intended, but I always felt that you were somewhat "forced" to review some of the hip hop albums you review when you're with DEHH. Not that kind of force that somebody puts a gun to your head and makes you review this and that album, but the kind of force that "Hey, this album is hot, this real hip hop or where it's at rap, y'all need to review this because it's so and so and everybody loves them." etc. Sometimes I ask: "Why is Myke even there ?" Not saying I disregard your commentary, but that "Why did I even bother to listen to this album" face is quite evident in some of the videos. And that made me follow your channel to see what you PERSONALLY dig and what destination I should expand my music taste to. Proud subscriber bro.
I saw Anthrax alive 2 dvd on demand , they basically got me into metal. So they have a special place. After Danny spitz left, i was very ehhh on their stuff. I love Rust and Peace though....
Love that Dave Mustaine impression. With Metallica I can't listen to anything after Ride The Lightning. The previous albums before Master of puppets were god tier compared to the rest of their discography
Hey Myke I know u guys did a review of Tech N9nes last solo album not to long ago but I really think u guys should review the new Tech N9ne collabos album. It just landed number 5 on the Billboard top 200 charts and its the number 1 rap album right now and I just think its important for independent music being on top. It's got dope beats and everybody raps their asses off on this new album. Plus I was wondering your thoughts on Murs being the newest member of Strange Music.
Thanks for your response. I guess you might be right you can't relate to every genre. I guess in my case I should just make sure I do the thoughtful research. I guess I still wonder if there share sounds that each genre that could capture me even though I am not of the culture that it caters to.
korn pioneered nu metal and were the first to be called that. As for slipknot their first two albums were nu metal but their newer ones became more traditional metal.
I like Megadeth a lot, though would always characterize them as pop-thrash. But everything you said about about Mustaine, made me laugh my ass off, i do get you. Still love their music though.
It kinda hurt that Myke's least favorite band is Megadeth..lol he picked the shittiest Megadeth song to make his point. His voice has never been great, but the attitude that has always come across from him, especially on the first 4 albums was what made it tolerable Plus, Peace Sells and Rust In Peace are top to bottom some of the greatest Metal albums ever written, But I respect his opinion anyways, peace
I not big on genres, sure they are there to separate music into stuff that sounds alike and give you something to call your own, me im an underground hip hop head but I enjoy a lot of different music as long as its good, or at least my definition of good which is weird at best. I like weird eclectic music that crosses genres, like els ISWYD, yes its hip hop but with so many othef types thrown in. Tpc being one of my fave songs ever an I struggle to fit it in just hip hop, having mars volta on the track doesnt help. Up all night sounds like a 50 megaton bomb is going of, then there is dear sirs, overly dramatic truth, flyentology, no kings. ISWYD is and probably will be my favorite album unless el drops something else to top it and no c4c wasnt it for me, but at tbe same time I like old school mo town, thrash(Metallica being number one followed by sepultura), punk, some country, pop, different types of metal, even a few nu metal(everyone has a guilty pleasure). But im still a hip hop head at heart but will bump anything as long as its good.
D: ...megadeth is my fav of the big 4, now dont get me wrong, they have made some shitty shit, but rust in piece, peace sells, and killing is my business, i think those three albums are incredible and feature some of the greatest metal riffs of all time, and i guess its just a preference but i think dave had a cool voice (back in the day, when it was RAWWW! and full of a young mans anger). the most unique voice of them all and it complemented their music very well. idk, i really dont get how you could HATE them, atleast those 3 albums, but dig on all the other big 4.
I've always loved Megadeth, and they are totally the reason I got into metal, but still, I loved that Dave Mustaine impression and think you are right about him and how much of an idiot he is.
+Hennaz Element some of their stuff yeah. mainly groove metal though man. listen to mouth for war; catch the breakdown towards the end of the song. that sounds like thrash to me fam
Slayers best album imo is Hell Awaits, its to me their most visceral and thrashiest album. Also come on dont tell me you havent heard 1 Korn song you liked. And i can understand not liking Megadeth but dude Rust in Peace Poison was the cure!! You cannot tell me thats a bad thrash song. that albums a classic man countdown to extinction is really nothing compared to that. As far as technicality Megadeth is miles ahead of Metallica. My fav is Anthrax tho moshiest riffs
Actually the only thrash band i think thats overrated besides Metallica is Testament to me they have like 2 good albums and thats it plus they kinda suk live now.
There isn't a genre of music I can't listen to. There is good music in any genre, and great music at the edge of any genre (music that pulls the limits on a genre, or fusion some).
The mournful and more serious tone of Persistence of Time is what makes it one of my favorite thrash albums of all time. I give it to Slayer or Metallica for my favorite band of the big four, but I’m not sure if those two ever made an album that means at much time me as that record
Maaaan. I loved all those bands. However I think I hate Metallica these days. They seem like total douchebags (except Trujillo). And Megadeth's Rust in Peace is one of my desert island discs.
speaking of slayer and metallica, i got master of puppets in the mail the other day and i found reign in blood at the record store the other day. those are both top two for me. i need to get into slayer a bit more, so for now, metallica is my #1 t
Metallica is my favorite but i really love megadeth their latest album is pretty shitty but rust in peace, peace sells but who's buying are great albums to me. I like Slayer but i can't stand anthrax. I don't even think they deserve a place in the big four bands like testament and overkill are a thousand times beter.
I have to say, Metallica would be my least favourite of the Big 4, and have Megadeth and Slayer tied for 1st place. That being said, I myself consider the majority of Megadeth's discography really boring, they only have 2 good albums imo, Rust In Peace and Peace Sells. Thing is, I REALLY like those albums. Countdown is EXTREMELY overrated. Symphony of destruction is one of the most boring 'thrash' metal songs I've ever heard, and most of Megadeth's discography, except for The system has failed (maybe), is barely passable. Do yourself a favour Mike, and only listen to the Megadeth albums with Ed Repka artwork. They just happen to be the absolute best megadeth has ever put out. Anthrax to me is kinda boring, generic thrash riffs with really weak socio-political lyrics. "They had a collab with a rapper, how progressive of them." Who cares, it was a terrible cover of a good song. Not to mention Belladonna, AKA, one of the most annoying voices in thrash. Almost as annoying as Mustaine's performance on any album post 1990. Almost. Yet, I still quite like some of their songs and I think Among The Living is a killer metal album. And Metallica...Well, I used to like them, but now I just think they suck terribly. They to me had a function comparable to most kids who used to like Slipknot, but then went on to listen to heavier stuff. They were the first metal band I really got into, and over the years, I noticed that I disliked them more and more with each passing year of exploring and expanding my tastes in metal and its sub-genres, to the point where Thrash Metal is one of my least favourite genres now, and I have given many other classic and more recent thrash bands a try, but I just think most are really boring. And Metallica only got worse with age. I can barely stand listening to anything they released after Ride the lightning, and I despise the black album. The same way that you'd never go to a Megadeth concert, I'd never go to a Metallica concert.
finally someone who agrees with me on megadeth, Dave's voice is so annoying, can't even listen to them. Slayer is by far the best out of the big 4, RIP JEFF
Anthrax is by far my least favorite of the Big 4. I'd actually go so far as to say they SUCK!!! I'd replace them with Overkill any day. Plus Scott Ian is a total prick.
the big 4 is overrated but metallica is the best from the big 4 second slayer 3. megadeth and anthrax ! (there are more thrash bands that are better than the big 4 overkill, testament and many) . but rust in peace is the best album !
