Bacteria often get a bad rap, but they’re some of our best partners in science and medicine! In this episode, we’ll explore what bacteria are doing with their DNA - including how they can trade it around. We’ll learn about chromosomes and plasmids, gene expression and recombinant DNA, and how E. coli are used to make insulin.
Introduction: The Microbiome 00:00
Prokaryotes & DNA 1:33
Plasmids & Horizontal Gene Transfer 2:44
Insulin 4:49
Gene Expression 6:30
Dr. Rebecca Lancefield 7:54
Review & Credits 9:05

Recombinant DNA has the potential for treating congenital diseases such as cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia. It has the potential to fix genetic errors. They are already early signs of being able to fix sickle cell anemia in some recent trials.

The new Insulin in the 80's did not suit my maternal Grandmother, it didn't "play well" with her other meds for heart and depression at the time. She was having hypos almost weekly, multiple hospital stays for all her problems each year - it was as if all of her problems were magnified, and she was on a CONSTANT roller coaster of symptoms of all her health problems. But in Australia, there was no going back to the "pig Insulin" as it was no longer available in the country. She died only nine years later at 72. I know she was one of a minority, but it still doesn't excuse blanket decisions by government - they should have left it for the customer and their Dr to decide which was better for them. It just goes to show how convoluted Insulin really is, it affects way more than just the transfer of Insulin into cells. Besides my 2 cents worth, a great episode! I was not aware of the different transfer mechanisms of DNA in bacteria, thank you!

Neat video but I have a few questions: Aren't Archaea there own domain of life, separate from prokaryotes and also more closely related to eukaryotes? And doesn't recombinant insulin that was synthesised in bacteria require extensive chemical modifications to properly function? Which is why it better produced in yeast.

I thought an entomologist was someone who studied insects? Although I don't know what they call a bacteria studying scientist - Dr. Bacterius?😂 Just busting your chops, good video. Very informational.
