We (accidentally) found the world's best "dielectric grease" (it's not dielectric grease)

You know that grease that they sell to waterproof electrical connections? Well, we found one that destroys corrosion. And it is amazing.
Where to buy: www.steelcamel...
Disclosure:
For the first time in the history of StudioVRM, a manufacturer gave us a free sample. Dan Jenkins at Steel Camel sent us this bottle of Thread N Post free of charge to test out in whatever ways we see fit. Thank you Dan.
That said, StudioVRM and Roger Maeda are not affiliated with or sponsored by Steel Camel and the company had no influence on the tests. If they did, they would have had me use it like an anti-seize instead of using it to try to kill electrical gremlins.

I have been using general purpose automotive grease on battery posts for years. It totally stops all corrosion.

Almost $70 now when i went to the website just now

Or you can clean terminals and use normal grease save money

expensive but a jar of this stuff last very long as you only need a thin coating.

Unfortunately you have to buy a $168 kit to get it from Steel Camel. For me one can lasts about 5 years. If you go through it like gas through a 454 then this is a great deal.

UPDATE: I just checked, and it looks like Steel Camel now sells a smaller kit that contains a can of Thread N Post and a spray bottle of the liquid rust preventative. www.steelcamel.com/store/p45/One_-_Two_Punch%21.html I think you can get individual cans if you call. But yes, that is the biggest downside to Thread N Post. If they sold individual cans online I would have no complaints about this stuff whatsoever.

Interesting and as far as trailers the manufactures need to get their act together as this should not even be an issue.

My concern is that anit-sieze compounds contain aluminum or copper as a rule. Using this on conductors can create a bridge causing a slow power drain or worse, a short in tightly packed multi wire connectors. For electrical, I would stick to true dielectric (silicon) grease.

When you use it sparingly, which you will because is too expensive to be wasteful, just covering the contact areas, it should not be an issue

I use that on the contacts of huge circuit breakers. i called it Mobil 28 and its in a can just like this.

What does it do to plastics?? Long term
@StudioVRM
@StudioVRM 6 месяцев назад
We use this stuff quite a bit on trailer plugs and car suspension systems, and it doesn't seem to have any effect on the plastic pieces. That said, we usually use very small amounts and try our best to not slather it on the plastic bits, so it is hard to say what would happen if we completely coated a piece of plastic and left it out in the sun.

They advertise dielectric is just contains non-metals in there product. Just the same as bearing grease

Odd post as I have been in the automotive practices for two decades +... for a living.. and someone always wanted to know something Angostura of it is why they have light on...when other things are on. Simple... gounrds.... and this is an intriguing video. As I'm only 2:23 into the video.

What's the special ingredient? Phos. acid?
@StudioVRM
@StudioVRM Год назад
The short answer is that we don't know. I initally thought that it might contain some sort of strong acid at first. But when we tested the acidity of Thread N Post, it came back with a pH between 6 and 7. If there are any acidic ingredients in Thread N Post, it's only present in very small concentrations.

I think your best bet would be to reach out to Dan Jenkins at Steel Camel directly. He might be able to arrange something for you: www.steelcamel.com/contact-us.html

Men i think... you are making a mistake. If it's in deed a dielectric compound, it cannot be between the connecting metals, it will create a layer of resistance, you are wasting energy. If it is dielectric, you can put it on the external union after the connection was already made for corrosion protection thought.

You are worried about a non-factor. *Dielectric grease is standard for marine connections.* (Most fancy expensive "marine" version things like breakers are just more sealed and/or just contain a little dielectric grease vs dry regular versions) *"Submersion rated" wire nuts* for sprinkler systems *are just regular wire nuts stuffed with dielectric grease* and a flap or little plastic fingers to keep the dielectric grease from getting washed or scooped out. If you actually test, you will find that *the resistance is so small, you can't even measure it on a standard multimeter.* A proper electrical connection should be tight. That pressure crams metal against metal where they slightly flex form much like a tire presses into asphalt. If your connection is suffering, you have a loose connection. *But you know what does real world (vs theoretical) significantly harm electrical connections frequently?* Corrosion. And dielectric grease is very effective at stopping that.

@@cyberkiller83 Dielectric grease will not impede a properly tensioned connector. If you experience issues after greasing, you either have contaminated grease (dirt in it), the wrong grease (solids components), or the contacts are not tight... Greasing connectors is common in various industries, and is sometimes mandated.
