This song was written by Prince and he gave it to The Bangles. Prince was a huge supporter of female artists over the years, and was an early fan of The Bangles. This song jump-started their career. Great group...love their vocals and I don't think they get enough credit for their musical abilities.
@@TonyM1961 It was written for a female group he created called Apollonia 6. He changed his mind and decided to give it to The Bangles because he had a crush on Susannah and it gave him an excuse to be around her and win her over.
Prince and Bob Dylan are The Simpsons of the music world. Always find out they wrote it (Simpsons did it). Wagon Wheel was actually a Bob Dylan unreleased original which blew my mind.
Love you guys. Amber...Please,Please PLEASE give Gloria Estafan and The Miami Sound Machine a listen. "Conga," "Get On Your Feet," and "The Rhythm Is Gonna Get You." Lots of horns, energy, and FUN. You'll love it.
OMG, Yes! When I did walk for exercise (years ago), these songs made me want to move. (And if you knew how much I hated exercise, that's saying a lot!)
The Bangles have so many great songs: In Your Room, Hazy Shade of Winter, If She Knew What She Wants, Walking Down Your Street.... You should dive into that rabbit hole. Excellent, underrated band.
I second the nomination for "Hold On" by Wilson Phillips. The group name is derived from the last names of the group members, Wendy and Carny Wilson (daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys) and Chyna Phillips (daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas' and the Papas') I think the song "Hold On" was supposed to be a message of encouragement for Brian Wilson who suffered from depression (among other things.)
Still wanting to see you guys react to Harden My Heart by Quarterflash for female Friday. Be sure to do this live version, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qkO7IXOGyDU.html, so you can see Orinda Sue "Rindy" Ross play that great saxophone intro. Amber will really love it!
Now that you've done "Walk Like an Egyptian", "Hazy Shade of Winter", & "Manic Monday", you should definitely do "Eternal Flame" next. All very different, & all wonderful. Their range of different songs is one of the reasons The Bangles are one of my favorite bands. I saw them in concert in Springfield, MA once. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen!
I can remember in the late 1980s me and my friends used to go to a bar in the UK and I always used to go to the Juke Box and put In Your Room on . I can remember they were playing in underwear in the video !
When Prince wrote this song, he had another jewel called 'Kiss'. Manic Monday hit #2 on The Charts and really solidified The Bangles as a top group. Meanwhile, as this song reached #2, Prince placed #1 above them with 'Kiss'. Man, that guy was a super talented writer for sure, as well as being a giving person, for allowing Susannah Hoffs to have Manic Monday for her aspiring young group. The original name of The Bangles was The Bang, but then they found out a New Jersey group already had it, so they went to The Bangles which actually fits a girl group even better.
Great song for Female Friday is ‘Alone’ by Heart, these two sisters are something else. Their tribute to Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ is brilliant.
Couple quick points: " Walk Like..." is a unique Bangles song in that each of the main singers take turns with the verses. Susanna who sang this had the last verse. 2) Prince so liked their style he wrote this song specially for them. Another side? Their cover of Simon and Garfunkle's "Hazy Shade of Winter" totally rocks.
Monday theme: “Monday, Monday” by The Mamas and Papas, “Rainy Days and Mondays” by The Carpenters, “I Don’t Like Mondays” by The Boomtown Rats… I’m sure there are others, but those are 3 great tracks to start you off :-)
Three of the Bangles took lead voice on different verses of Walk Like An Egyptian. Susanna Hoffs was their usual lead (Prince was in love with her and wrote this song for them), but they also all four sang great harmonies. "Be With You" is somewhat obscure but really a great song written and performed by them.
He wasn’t in love with this Susannah like everyone thought. He was in love with Susannah Melvoin, the twin sister of Wendy Melvoin his guitarist in The Revolution.
@@shaundgb7367 I like the song with him singing it never liked it before hearing him sing it. He wrote a ton of songs for a boat load of people even Kenny Rogers so the man could write he knew what he was doing. Go look up the long list of people he wrote songs for.
Fun fact: Susanna Hoffs was actually in a movie back in the ‘80’s called “The All-Niter”. Now that you’re hooked on The Bangles, you need to check out The Go-Go’s. The Bangles probably wouldn’t have happened without the prior success of The Go-Go’s. Try “Our Lips Are Sealed” or, better yet, “We Got the Beat” (their signature song). Another female fronted band you might like is Divinyls. The song they’re best known for is “I Touch Myself” (just make sure the kids are out of the room…).
Susanna Hoffs is the lead vocalist. On Walk like an Egyptian each of the girls sang a verse, I think Susanna sang the 3rd verse. Most of their songs she is the lead
I am a Toriboi❣❣❣ Cornflake Girl is a great starter🥰 Love to see them react to Little Earthquakes too. J would love the piano and figuring her songs out.
I was *obsessed* with Tori in high school… anything Tori would be okay with me! I agree, “Cornflake Girl” is a good starter. Or even “Tear In Your Hand.”
Three songs for any particular Monday: "I Don't Like Mondays" by The Boomtown Rats; "Monday, Monday" by The Mamas and the Papas; "Rainy Days and Mondays" by The Carpenters.
And a song about Monday till Friday: Friday on My Mind by The Easybeats (all men). Live version (French TV, 1967) has great sound and is so much fun to watch!
In California in 1979 there was a school shooting. When the girl who did it was asked why, she said "I don't like Mondays". I'll find it and post it below.
You’re absolutely right, this song did very well and was everywhere when it came out in ‘86. It always makes me think of groggily and crankily getting ready for school in the morning, probably because it was always on the radio in the background. But now that I’m older and understand the lyrics a little more and on a different level, I have a whole new appreciation for it. I loved The Bangles. Definitely an iconic group for me.
This song was written by Prince. It’s a really good song that hits me the same way years after my undergrad days. Billboard number two. I still love it and all MONDAY songs
Wilson Phillips,-(Hold on) all girl group. Bananarama,-(Cruel Summer) all girl group Macy Gray,-(I try) female singer with a unique voice. Just a few suggestions. I was on a roll sorry.
This song was written by American musician Prince using the pseudonym "Christopher" and was originally intended for the group Apollonia 6 in 1984. Lyrically, it describes a woman who is waking up to go to work on Monday, wishing it was still Sunday so she could continue relaxing! Love it too...viva the 80s forever!!!!
The band members actually rotated vocals on "Walk Like an Egyptian," with each one taking a verse. So you did hear lead singer Susanna Hoffs on that one, but briefly. To hear a different side of the Bangles, you want "Eternal Flame." Next Stops: Quarterflash, "Harden My Heart" Scandal, "Goodbye to You" Pet Benatar, "Shadows of the Night"
The depth of talent and abilities in this group is amazing. having so many great singers and obviously great instrumentalists, a lesson the Beatles taught us, makes a formidable end product!
Amber you need to dive in to The Go Go's Our Lips Are Sealed or The Runaways Cherry Bomb it has Joan Jet and Lita Ford in this Band you will like it thanks
Check out Prince singing this song. It’s a rehearsal practice as he gave this song away. But it’s fun to go down the whole Prince Journey. Somehow I always knew when it was a Prince song regardless of who sang the song. He definitely had a sound
Great song. I started picking out my outfit the night before to wear the next day. It saves alot of time when I already have laid out what I am going to wear.
If you want to hear the Bangles rock out try their song "hazy shade of winter" . It is a cover of a late 60s rock song and it was the them song on the sound track for the movie "less than zero".
@@BlackHatCinephile they've listened to walk like an egyptian with their girls. They say that at the start and they also said it when they listened to hazy days of winter.
For "Female Friday" I strongly suggest the band 10,000 Maniacs. Natalie Merchant (former) lead singer is a force of nature! "These Are Days" is a wondeful joyous song of hope. "What's The Matter Here?" is a tough song about abuse but it has an important theme. and finally "Because The Night" is their biggest hit, classic cover of Patti Smit hit. There probably two dozen excellent 10,000 Maniacs cjoices, these are three favorites.
Great suggestion. “Because the Night”, “These are the Days”, “What’s the Matter Here” and “I’m Not the Man”, are all great. In fact, pretty much everything off of “10,000 Maniacs: Unplugged” is great.
Good suggestion! I haven't heard What's The Matter Here? for years. Must go find my 10,000 Maniacs CD now. (yes CD because it's just better quality than any version you'll find on line). 😉
All great songs and choices, I would also suggest 'Abou the Weather', a great song that mixes an upbeat pop sound with deep lyrics about fighting depression.
"Manic Monday" is a song by the American pop rock band the Bangles, and the first single released from their second studio album, Different Light (1986). It was written by American musician Prince using the pseudonym "Christopher" and was originally intended for the group Apollonia 6 in 1984. Lyrically, it describes a woman who is waking up to go to work on Monday, wishing it was still Sunday so she could continue relaxing. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manic_Monday
This song was The Bangles' very first Top 40 hit in early 1986. The song was written by Prince under a different name. The name he used is Alexander Nevermind. This song peaked at the #2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Bangles: "Eternal Flame" (Their other #1 hit besides “Walk Like An Egyptian”), "If She Knew What She Wants", "In Your Room" & "Walking Down Your Street".
Eternal Flame is one of their slower songs. Its also an amazing song. Susanna's voice is so peaceful in this song. If possible you should check out the "Susanna Hoffs - Eternal flame (Live NRK Wiese 1996)" performance. Where its just her voice and an acoustic guitar. So good.
"6 o'clock this morning, I was just in the middle of a dream. I was kissin Valentino by a crystal blue Italian stream." One of my favorite lyrics ever.....
Excellent Prince-written tune! Thanks for reacting! Susanna Hoffs did lead vocals on this and Walk Like An Egyptian. Next, please listen to Eternal Flame.a very different side to the Bangles.
The lead singer in this song, Susanna Hoffs, sang the last two verses of "Walk like an Egyptian". They did a rock version of "Hazy Shade of Winter" (for a soundtrack). Most of the members of the band wrote and sang songs on the albums, but the de facto leader became Susanna. I'll always liked "In your room," Walking down your Street" and "Following" (Michael Steele wrote and sang). They were very versatile but underrated since they were a "girl band" in a male dominated industry. Which is exactly why Female Friday's is so important and fun.
I love The Bangles! I grew up in the '80s when Mtv was everything! We couldn't wait to see what new videos when they came out. The Bangles were definitely some of my favorites! My favorite song of theirs is 'Eternal Flame'! Thanks for another great reaction from you guys! Love y'all!
If I remember correctly, Prince wrote this song for the Bangles. I have a suggestion for Female Friday her name is Angela Bofill and the songs I recommend is, "I Try" and "This Time I'll be Sweeter". Amber, you'll love the horns in "I Try".
Susanna Hoff's has such a beautiful unique voice, you couldn't help but love her. She still singing to this day too. There is a live version of her singing this song from 2021
If you like songs about disliking mondays, check out i don't like mondays by the boomtown rats...not a female group but good song based on a sad true story event
So funny you say that. Back in the day got to see The Bangles for free at The Palace in LA. A local Top-40 radio station would sponsor a weekly free concert, and I went to this show. When they got to this song, Prince came out and ripped a guitar solo that absolutely killed. Yes, he wrote this for the band, but I think he wrote it specifically for Susanna Hoffs (the lead singer on the song), cuz they had the hots for each other! 🤟🔥
I love this song and can't help but sing every time I hear it, but my absolute favorite song by The Bangles is "Eternal Flame." It shows a completely different side of them. I'm 100% certain Amber will love it (I can practically guarantee the Amber Sway), and I think Jordan will probably like it as well.
I love your look Amber when she lets go make some noise and the girls all choirs wth that cute note classic great to watch you both. Listen to In Your Room you'll like it.
Prince wrote this song especially for The Bangles and it was their first hit single. Susanna Hoffs sings the 3rd stanza in Walk Like An Eqyptian. Eternal Flame is a beautiful slower type song, In Your Room, If She Knew What She Wants and We Close Our Eyes are also all great Bangles tunes.
There is one old short video here on youtube were the bangles are playing manic monday together with prince. Especially great to both see prince and vicky in harmony on the guitar.
