Anyone know why she was not in the music video? She was a real cutie, definitely not someone you'd want to hide. Was she already in trouble with the music industry?
Flashdance was the female counterpart to Rocky, showing that with hard work and passion you can reach the goal you want to reach. I can't believe you've never heard the song before as it is iconic.
I never thought of it that way, but you are absolutely right. Not only the story but the actual movie that was never intended to be such a hit & Jeniffer Beals who would be a star forever because of this one movie.
Irene Cara sang the theme songs from two pivotal 80's movie that were about theatre & dance. ..this one and "Fame" for the movie of the same name. Both movies started major fashion trends as people started wearing the eclectic styles that theatre & dance kids wore. "Flashdance" was a very inspiring movie about a working class girl who dreams of being a dancer. It was Jennifer Beals' breakout role. Another great song you should check out from the movie is "Maniac" by Michael Sembello.
She also has the song "Fame" which was another iconic hit for that movie. She deserves your praise. You should definitely hit this one up. Also read about her story. This video has her actually in it and you can see what she really looks like.
As of 11/25/2022, This beautiful sister has passed on.😓😓😓 But her music and presence of actually having been on this Earth, will "LIVE FOREVER" and her "FAME" will not be forgotten. R.I.P. IRENE CARA.
You gotta see the movie! It was iconic, even just for the those torn sweatshirts that started a trend. Try Out Here On My Own from Fame. It’s a ballad but she kills it.
Out here on my own is such a beautiful song! It’s one that has grown w/ me. It always punch’s me in the feels, but hits differently at different times of my life!
This is another movie you need to add to your movie list! This and Michael Sembello's "Maniac" were all over radio when this film was in theaters (and long after)! As for Irene, she broke out in 1980 with the title song from the hit movie (and later TV series) "Fame", which is a banger. She also had hits with "Out Here On My Own", "Why Me?" and "Breakdance". Though she faded from the spotlight after the 80s, she still in the business, performing with the band she formed in 1999, Hot Caramel. The woman in the video, the star of the film, is Jennifer Beals. A terrific actress and a phenomenal dancer.
I love the soundtrack since I picked the tape in my parents collection back in the 80s, have it on CD now, but ironically I never watched the movie :-)
Irene Cara was a phenomenal singer and actress who was unfortunately blacklisted after she sued her record company over royalties. She ultimately won the case, but her career never recovered. You should listen to her song Fame. It's fantastic.
You have to love the 80's. This was one of the biggest songs of the decade. I was 12 in 1983 and remember this song pumping out on the radio during the summer of '83. The whole Flashdance Soundtrack is a winner. That's one thing I miss these days is huge soundtrack albums that spawn many hits on the radio; the 80's had so many. Flashdance, Footloose, Purple Rain, Beverly Hills Cop, Pretty In Pink, Top Gun, Dirty Dancing to name a few. What a time to grow up.
They might also recognize Paul McCrane singing, as well. Every time I see him acting now, even as the horrible Emil in Robocop, I can’t help but first picturing him as the sweet acting student in Fame.
Let's not forget Giorgio Moroder in all this, he composed and produced the music after all. RIP Irene, she made this soar, it still gives me goosebumps every time that chorus kicks in.

@@sifridbassoon Gloria was an Umberto Tozzi (and Giancarlo Bigazzi) song, it wasn't written by Moroder although Moroder and Harald Faltermeyer did work with Laura Branigan.
Michael Sembello's "Maniac" will make you want to see the movie even more Make sure it's the Music Video version from the movie! Fame" by Irene Cara is another banger!
From the Fame soundtrack her songs "Fame" and "Hot Lunch Jam" are amazing. The movie is great too. Check out Flashdance as well, the two will make a great double feature! Both are iconic 80's.
@@Sportsref13 I agree the newer Fame wasn't as good as the original, but it has its own bright spots. Naturi Naughton's updated versions of Fame and Out Here On My Own were both good in their own right; she brought herself into the performances rather than copying Irene, which is the way it should be. And the finale, "Hold Your Dreams" is very inspiring and beautifully choreographed. I think its as powerful in its own way as the original Fame finale, "I Sing The Body Electric". Not better, just different, and still good. But I'm biased; I'm addicted to everything Fame, both movies, the TV series, the Broadway musical, the reality show, the Fame LA series, I love 'em all!
@@jrasicmark1 I Sing The Body Electric was the song that chorus sang at my high school graduation on 6-3-1984. Fame and Flashdance are both iconic movies with great soundtracks.
Irene Cara was screwed over by the record company on this song. It spent 6 weeks as the number one song in America and topped the charts around the world. They paid her $183 in royalties that first year and only then she collected about $62,000 by the end of 1984. The record executive from her company went on a smear campaign and virtually ended her singing career in the 1980s. Finally a judge in the 90s awarded her 1.5 million after determining her career had been damaged by this man and she was the victim of misallocated funds
Jesus what the hell is wrong with people. It’s her song and she should have benifited the most from it not the God damned record company. I mean she won a Grammy with this song.
@@mariusmarius5964 It was both. This song performance won her the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and they also won the Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for TV or Film. The song also won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, so she would've accepted those as part of the team that wrote and produced it.
For me the judge should have given her more money like 10 million. Those record executives are evil as they come. By the way Cynthia Rhodes is the dancer in the movie Flash Dance. The movie and the song was a real big deal in the early 80's.
Marine Jahan ( born January 1, 1959, in Versailles, France) is a French actress and dancer. In the United States, she is known for dancing as the body-double for Jennifer Beals in the 1983 film Flashdance
My best friend was painfully shy. This was the first song he ever danced to in public...I was so proud of him when he shed that fear. He's gone now, but I will forever cherish that time seeing him smile. I weep every time I hear this song...not out of sadness, but with humility in seeing his watershed moment.
The theme from Flashdance was one of the biggest hits of the 1980s. Her style epitomized the best of the decade. I hope she sets an example for future entertainers. It is sad to hear of her passing. RIP
Phenomenal movie, amazing soundtrack - I played mine until the cassette broke! Jennifer Beals was /is a wonderful actress. However, Marine Jahan did 80% of the dancing in the film, and I want her to get the credit. Enjoy! Love your reactions!!!
Great song, video, and movie! Jennifer Beals and Olivia Newton John were partly responsible for the leg warmer trend in the 80s. Olivia's "Let's Get Physical" would be a great one to follow this reaction.
Mariah Carey has stated looking up to her and being a fan of the phenomenal Irene Cara. "Flashdance...What a Feeling!" has got to be one of the most triumphant records ever made.
She really has such a beautiful, powerful voice. I'm always surprised she didn't have more hits than she did. Try "Out here on my own" to give you all the feelings.
If you never seen “ Flashdance” make it must. It inspired an entire generation wanting to become performers, artists, and possible stars. Just a great movie and even better soundtrack capturing a great era. It also rings a tone in my heart of a long lost friend who shared his love of music and dance with all who knew him. I still miss you brother, one day I’ll see you again 🙏🏽💯❤️
I would recommend listening to Michael Sembello's Maniac from Flashdance as well. I recall seeing the movie in the theater when it was released. It had a great affect on fashion of that era of the 80s. The movie stars Chicago's own, Jennifer Beals. Irene Cara does have a great voice. Her Fame should be next.
Oscar winner for best song from a motion picture. This was a little movie that came out of nowhere and took the world by storm. You really should see it.
Legendary Giorgio Moroder produced this song. He could do no wrong when it came to creating iconic synth based dance music. He was the creative genius behind Donna Summer’s biggest hits “I Feel Love”, “Hot Stuff”, “Bad Girls”, “MacArthur Park”, “Last Dance”, Berlin’s “No More Words”, Limahl’s “Never Ending Story”, Blondie’s “Call Me”, Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer duet “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” just to name a few.
back in the day when this came on the radio you KNEW it was the beginning of summer...seemed like it was that same point every year when it was played...loved it...the energy just put me in the mood to head to the lake, and go swimming
This movie Flash Dance was one of the most iconic film of the 80s!!! Irene Cara also did the FAME!!! Believe me the movie is also worth it to watch it!!!
If you listen to Irene, without watching the video, she shines even more. She has this beautiful vibrato that she holds. Most singers fake it, but Irene sustains it, and it's gorgeous. (And she's gorgeous.) Wish I hadn't watched this because now I'm going to have to watch the movie again! Gee whiz, you guys!!! What you make me do. :)
The three most famous dance movies of the 80s are Flashdance, Footloose, & Dirty Dancing. Now you guys have to react to "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins and "I've Had the Time of My Life" by Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes.
Irene Cara was also the lead in the original version of the movie “Sparkle” and was one of the leads in the original version of the movie “Fame” where she also sings the title song. My favorite Irene Cara song is “Out Here On My Own” from “Fame”. Multi-talented latina with whom I grew up with watching on tv in the children’s show “The Electric Company” . Award winning actress, singer, songwriter and dancer…Iconic 🔥🔥
I watched a few reaction videos for Irene Cara since her death was announced last night. I find it interesting that people think that Irene is the dancer in the movie. The strange truth is that most of the dancing by the main character wasn't even done by the star of the movie and that the woman that actually did it was somewhat slighted because the movie producers wanted people to believe that the star was doing the dancing.
Agree 100%. That scene is imprinted in my mind ever since i saw the movie in the 80's, i was probably 8 or 9. Many have covered it, but NO ONE can do it like Irene. To me still the best moment on the movie.
I must admit listening to this song and watching the video almost made me cry. So many parts of my young childhood Miss Irena Cara's voice was apart of. So many times she made me dance and smile when things weren't going all that great for me. RIH Miss Irena Cara rest in Peace knowing that you did what you were put on this Earth to do.
I remember buying this song on a 45 rpm record shortly after it came out in 1983. I played this record a million times. Never got tired of hearing it. Love your reaction.
