Tranquilizers were given to orphans throughout the 1950's to keep them calm as well as making them easier to control. You'll see them pop up through out the show quite a bit. So glad you guys are watching this series, it's amazing!
Benzodiazepines, Judy Garland was also addicted to these. They were given to her by MGM Studios as a means to help get to sleep and then given uppers in the morning.
For people who don’t know what benzodiazepines are, some examples are Xanax, Valium, Ativan, etc. The pills in the show are fake but they were supposed to be Librium like they are in the book
The crazy thing is that people like this actually exist. Magnus Carlsen, the best chess player in the world did the same exact thing (play multiple people at the same time) except with more people. He also played blind and so on. The way these people's minds work is absolutely insane.
@@tink6225 no i didn't mean to bring the show down or hate. the show is so good at making it look cool while making it being very realistic at the same time. i'm just trying to show that people irl can actually do this because for beginners it may look impossible and unrealistic. it's a testament to how humans can reach these levels of intelligence and that's just cool to see
@@TheSofkujepanen It's pretty simple in theory. People call out what squares things are being moved to and all you have to do is remember what piece is on what square at any given time. Now you just need to be really good at visualizing and remembering all that information. Most people get tripped up by those parts. Kind of envious to be honest, I can't even think ahead more than three or four moves playing chess.
This is such a good show well deserved Emmy nominations for this show and a lead actress nom for anya Taylor joy she’s an amazing actress I predict Oscar’s in her future she was great in the Northman also can’t wait to see all your reactions as the show unfolds
They used to tranquilize kids in orphanages to make them easier to control. Also doctors heavily prescribed tranquilizers to women for basically any reason….including on request of husbands or being seen as too outspoken.
Yep, just commented about it. It's more than just orphanages, it went deeper into a whole "give drugs to women so they stop complaining about things" thing.
as seen in BeWitched. Their neighbours, the wife being "off her meds" bc of the things that she sees Samantha doing, is a running joke. She's really infantilized.
In 1962 my mom was prescribed tranquilizers while she was PREGNANT with my older sister! Mom told me my sister slept 24/7 until she was 3 months old. She literally had to wake her up to feed her. She even slept through her baths.
Ah i love the queens gambit, its such an original story. kinda refreshing with all that superhero overload these days scary fact: they actually did give the kids in orphanages pills to keep them calm, so a lot of them got addicted early on. they ofc got banned at some point. Beth has a genius, mathematical mind so we see how she (and probably other pro chess players) goes through every possible move in imagination to decide what to play next
Check is when the king is in danger of being captured, but the player has a way to escape/defend. Checkmate is the end of the game because the king is in a position to be captured and there's no way to avoid it. Some chess players will concede a match long before a checkmate actually happens because they know they don't have a way to win.
It's a stunningly lowkey uncomfortable show. It so beautifully weaves heavy hitting subject matter with this separate gifted status storyline. I love it so much
SO happy y'all decided to watch this series. Since it came out on Netflix I've seen it easily 20 times, it's o e of my favourites to recommend to others! As for the tranquilizers in the orphanage - it was extremely common practice for childrens homes in the 40s/50s to medicate the children with tranqs to make them "easier to handle". As it happens in the show, it was banned in the mid-50s. They might have still had them for children over a certain age like Jolene. Enjoy the rest of the series, it only gets better!
Omg. This is my favorite show and nobody ever talks about it. The first episode scared me too - lol! I was scared it was gonna be a horror show, but it’s not at all! It’s so good! So excited for y’all to keep watching!
Tranquilizers were unfortunately very common in the ‘50s in not only orphanages but also psych wards and housewives. It was a way to keep those above them in control; those ahead of them, truly believed they were saving them from themselves. I got my husband hooked to this show and we love Beth. The actress who plays the younger version of both Beth and Jolene did an excellent job!
OMG yes this show is so amazing- I rmb being hesitant to watch it because I was like why would I care about a show that’s about chess..? But it was so good and well done !!!
When I first saw this episode, I thought Beth was going to break in and grab a few handfuls of tranquilizers and shove them in her pockets, to hide in her room. I was NOT expecting her to immediately shove fistfuls of them down her throat. I was like, "Holy shit!" That was so insane.
I love how you guys have a little talking sesh after the video and really put in your insight and what ur looking forward to. So glad I found u guys on my tl. Looking forward to this series ☺️☺️
Y’all probably know now but it’s not just in horror stories, these orphanages and teen help centers drug, luckily it’s not as much of a secret as it used to be. These facts are the reason I find the title of “American horror stories” so interesting, bc so many kids and adults live a reality here that is horrific and we all just assume good is being done and they use that liberty against us.
Thanks, Zuff! Thanks, Rob! Thanks, Bryce! ♟ Moses Ingram who played 'Jolene' is a joy to watch perform. She also portrayed 'Reva' in OBI-WAN KENOBI (2022). #ReelTime #ScottFrank #TheQueensGambit
As somebody who doesn't know anything about chess beside the pieces name and how they move, it's actually very mind-blowing watching this series! I am now hooked in learning chess.
this show was absolutely amazing, the film style was so interesting and the general plot of the story and all of the characters, fascinating. cant wait to watch your reaction to the rest of the show
so excited for yall to watch this!!! ,,its my all time favorite show, it is amazing and anya did so good at being beth, cant wait for you guys to get to the other episodes!!
"Check" means your king is in peril and you must move it out of eminent danger. "Check Mate" is when you've move your pieces in a way that your opponents king can't move any place without capture.
I'm seeing this 1 year later. Beth did not Become world champion by beating Borgov. She won the Moscow invitational, which would have made her rating soar to be one of the strongest players in the world..Borgov would have had about 2800. Beth would be in 2700 range. To become world champion she would have to win a round Robin tournament and if victorious , she would have to play Borgov in a 12 game match.
You should check out the try guy video where all 4 of them play a chess master at the same time, while he is blindfolded! It’s so cool to see a master’s ability in action; no matter the area of expertise.
"Check" does not mean you'll get beat in the next move. It means you have to move your king in your next move, or at least, move one of your pieces to block your opponent from "getting" your king.
First video I’ve seen of you guys, and I really dig how invested you guys are. A lot of people dismiss stuff they don’t understand, but y’all are trying to figure it out and aren’t dismissive. It’s a nice change compared to what I see a lot
I loved how much this show brought chess back into the cultural zeitgeist. I enjoy chess but I do not know any of the special names of moves or anything.
i think the scenes with the chess board on the ceiling was more so symbolic of her photographic memory, but that's just how i perceived it! i know this comment is late hahah love your videos:)
Really happy and surprised that you guys decided to react to this!!! I left a comment in one of your other videos suggesting the show, but I wasn't sure if it'd get picked. Glad it won the poll on Patreon. 😁👏🏾
Love the show, love the game. Even though I’m not particularly good at it 🤣. Love how accurately it portrays chess. A lot of the top players in the world can imagine the board and pieces moving in their minds. Some can even play chess blindfolded. Great reaction 👌
It's noticeable that you guys always see people as having bad motives before you recognise the good in them. That tells me a lot about the society that raised you.
Yesss this show is astounding, the cinematography the music score the ambience this show gives, just everything about it is amazing!! Cant wait to watch along
This episode reminds me of a movie "The day will come". If you haven't watched it then watch it. It's pretty intense, sums up living condition of orphans in war time.
They show the chess board in a ceiling is an imagination going through her head, You cant show the imagination so they did it like that and every good chess player ever lived can imagine and Play the whole game or different variations in their head.
In the book, Beth was taken to the hospital and had her stomach pumped after taking the pills. Not shown in the series, presumably it's just obvious what they'd do.
Capablanca, (at the age of 6) saw his father play a friend. he asked his father to play with him. and he beat his father, at the age. he went on to be world champion.
