She did this movie and Simply Irresistible during breaks from Buffy. She’s so different from that role to this. And from Buffy as well. She deserved to be in more things!!
@@johnnydeleon8210 I know right!!! They probably haven’t seen I Know What You Did Last Summer!! It really blows my mind that there are humans on the Earth that don’t know that Sarah Michelle Gellar IS Buffy Summers!! It really hurts.
I love that both of the lead characters are actually both twisted people and they don’t try to give Sebastian the ultimate happy ending because he still did horrible stuff and Annette is the one who exposes Kathryn in the end a great ending and lol yes the sibling relationship is weird as hell but that was in a lot of these 90s and older films lol
In my opinion the only reason they didn’t give him a happy ending is because they completely adapted the book. If the book had a happier ending the movie would’ve as well because in the 90s it was very popular to redeem bad men through love and give them a fairytale ending
The diary says: "There has never been a single person in human existence quite like Kathryn. Stunning to look at, and exciting to be near - cold as ice. She cares about absolutely no one but herself. This girl has elevated self-absorption into an art form. She believes in nothing and laughs in the face of sadness, faith, and sincerity. A person solely observing her and having seen the damage she's done to so many lives would most likely classify her as evil. She scoffs at any and every type of religion, all the while manipulating others by using the idea of being religious all to her advantage. She'll steal monetarily or emotionally from anyone who crosses her path, spend night after night in drunken, drug-induced debauchery, but lives this other life as the consummate perfect angel. She is in a sense brilliant, as evidenced by the fact that she has indeed completely fooled each person she has ever had to-except me-and she knows it. We are very similar people except I have a heart, and from time to time, actually feel emotion Kathryn does not. I have seen her break the spirits of others, cheat on anyone supposedly important to her, and all these things are done without so much as a second thought."
Really late reply, but just so you know at 37:48 they realize, and Rob even says he feels silly for it, and he even says her full name instead of Buffy (after Zuff says "Buffy").

Omg I thought I was the only one! Till this day when I play it, especially in my car I have flashbacks of that ending scene like I'm reece witherspoons character lol
“Just because you fell in love with one girl doesn’t mean that you’re a good person” PREACH! I’m actually starting to feel bad for him because he was just also manipulated into doing those things but he made choices. Being inlove with someone doesn’t automatically erase his wrong doings but it just made him feel like a human
TheTake did a great video asking whether Kathryn wasn't actually "right", or you know antihero. Sebastian did much more f*cked up things (revenge p*rn being the top), and yet as a kid I rooted for him. I really do recommend that video - it changes your perspective.
It's not that I feel old; they just feel out of the loop. Buffy finds every generation. That Scooby movie garbage won't stand the test of time. People like that because they saw it when they were 12. It's not the same
This is also around when Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe started dating and eventually got married young af, they were like the most beautiful teen stars at the time and it’s crazy their kids look legit like a carbon copy of them
A lot of people don’t realize that as evil as Kathryn is Annette is still giving her one more chance in the bathroom scene. She is giving her a final shot to come clean and be honest about who she is and what she has done. Annette even repeats what Kathryn said previously about “when I feel I can’t go on I turned to Jesus and he helps me through it” to insinuate to her that she saw her snort coke from the stall. This is also the moment Annette knows she can believe everything Sebastian wrote in his journal. When Kathryn still doesn’t take the bate, that is when Annette decides to release Sebastians journal.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is a goddess and one of the biggest stars of the 90s. Aside from this, she did Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, Scooby-Doo, Scooby Doo 2 and The Grudge. I'm excited she's coming back to TV with a new show called Wolfpack!
Ryan Phillippe(Sebastian) and Reese Witherspoon were actually dating each other when making this movie. They had been dating about 2 years prior to making this. They 1st met each other at Reese's 21st birthday party, where Reese seen Ryan, went up to him, and asked him if he was her birthday present. They got married the same year this movie was released. Sadly the marriage didn't last. They divorced after 7 years. They have 2 children together. When they were filming the break up scene in this movie, it was emotionally challenging for both of them. The slap Annette gives Sebastian was not in the script, Reese improved that slap because she was so upset. After the scene, when Ryan walks out the door, he vomits because of how emotional that scene was for both of them.
In terms of comparing “Cruel Intentions” to “Clueless,” the main thing that comes to mind is that they are adaptations of classic writings from hundreds of years ago. “Cruel Intentions” was from the French novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses.” “Clueless” was from Jane Austin’s “Emma.” And while we’re at it, “10 Things I Hate About You” is from Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew.” It seems Hollywood is allergic to original stories. Lol. To be fair though, they did a great job translating all of them to teens.
" It seems Hollywood is allergic to original stories." Funny, that you mention that and Shakespear in the same comment - who borrowed all kinds of plots. It's true however that Hollywood is allergic to original stories, but this is more about the modern "superhero" and "sequal" mania, than about creative adaptions like this one
They're respected, well known, and repeatedly high-earning(for movie versions) writings that are out of copyright, it's not surprising they use them a lot.
This is weirdly a classic in its own way. It’s based on a classic French novel. I think it’s a great time for this to be either remade or readapted, like as a HBO show or something.
@@LuvNickynGina4ever well I would definitely be up for them adapting the novel. It’s been a while since I got to see a really good twisted/toxic historical drama.
This movie is the teenage version of the 1988 movie, Dangerous Liaisons starring John Malkovich, Glenn Close, Michelle Pfieffer and Uma Thurman. That movie is worth checking out too, especially so you can compare and contrast.
I love how much differently this hit with you than it hit when it first came out. I strongly remember the guys I knew being aware Sebastian was horrible, but much more amazed and thrilled by him than horrified. In retrospect, as I watch reactors see the movies I grew up with, we were willing to overlook so much and I'm glad that isn't the case any longer.
They were dating for about 2 years before this movie. They met at Reese's 21st birthday party, where she saw Ryan and asked him if he was her birthday present. They made this movie when Reese was 23.
@@kaylaturner4095 UGH the molding with the icy blue paint !? the trundle bed !! the ornate french style phone ?? still not over it all these years later
Let’s just say it… Sebastian sexually abused Cecile and they played the scenes up as a joke. So gross 🤢 thank you guys for calling out how shitty he was.
But it is that. They never played it as a joke, I never saw it as that. I saw it as manipulation and psychological abuse among other things. Thats the point of the movie and the story. Its all fucked up. If someonw fins it funny maybe they should question themselves
@@BooneErica you do realise sebastian is the villain so she is very right to call him a shitty person. How is calling out sexual manipulation "woke" nonsense 😭
@@eliwrites1236 well guess what? Sebastian was always MEANT TO BE THE VILLAIN. If you want to watch a perfect human being, go watch blues clues. Yes, he took advantage of women, if you don’t like it, watch something else.
@@BooneErica Right? Or maybe every movie should be people who never do anything wrong. I wonder if the OP has the same problem with Michael Myers, or anyone else in slasher movies, someone who’s brutally murdered hundreds of people? Hopefully they’re all over the Halloween reactions to talk about how disgusting Michael’s behavior is..
The Movie is also based off of a French play from the 1700’s. There’s a 1988 film version that is a period piece representing that era called Dangerous Liaisons. The two main characters aren’t step siblings in the movie. It was also nominated for several Oscars. It’s worth a watch. I love both of these versions of the play.
@@RoyKoopaling The original was a novel, yes, but there was a stage adaptation as well, which was what the 1988 film adapted (not the novel directly). There was also the 1989 film Valmont, which WAS based on the original novel, and Annette Bening was * *chef's kiss* * in that one.
FYI, as a survivor (with some difficulty) of having my smallish car hit by a much heavier Chevy Topkick using the right-turn-only lane to run a red light at high speed, you can be bleeding out internally while not looking, or thanks to adrenaline, even feeling very bad right after being hit. Fortunately, witnesses prevented me from aggravating fractured vertebrae and I got airlifted to a trauma center in time to remove my ruptured spleen, repair my lacerated liver, and transfuse 3 qt of my blood volume.
prolly someone has said it already, but just in case: internal bleeding can kill you within 2 hrs without knowing you're internally bleeding. especially a severed spleen or a punctured lung that hasn't made itself known yet. we don't know the cause of death here but it could also be a delayed consequence of head injury and brain damage.
I felt personally victimized by them identifying SMG as Daphne instead of Buffy. And not just because Buffy is my favorite tv show. She’s one of the most badass, iconic characters in tv history. I need them to react to Buffy now
My teenage heart loves this drama back then! 😂 ❤️ This is actually a remake based on the 1988 movie Dangerous Liaisons with Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfieffer and Uma Thurman. Highly recommend it.
SPOILERS - This is based on the book Les Liaisons Dangerous published in 1782. It was written as a satire of the French nobility just before the French Revolution hence the depraved behaviour. In the book Cécile is a nun that Sebastian corrupts, Annette dies of fever after Sebastian is killed in a duel and Kathryn gets smallpox but survives and lives out her days in the country permanently disfigured, her outer self now reflecting her inner self.
My favorite part about this movie is that Ryan and Reese were together at this time in real life so when she had to slap him it took a toll on her he had to check in on her because she was crying none stop she didn't want to hit him because at this time she was in love with him in real life and felt bad after she had to act like he actually cheated on her in order to do it so the slap was real he was going to have her stop playing the character but she said no she was fine and continued the movie
Going over a vehicle like that can cause internal bleeding - especially if he hit his head. You don't always have to be completely mangled looking or bloody for there to be serious injury.
If you haven't already watched Dangerous Liaisons you absolutely should. That film (and book that it as adapted from) is the inspiration for Cruel Intentions and is completely amazing. You would love Dangerous Liaisons - everyone loves Dangerous Liaisons!
This movie was adapted from the 18th century French novel , Les Liaisons Dengeruses, that caused quite a scandal back then. And it was adapted several times for the stage and the screen. The best film version, for me, was the 1988 version ["Dangerous Liaisons"] and won three Oscars. Compared to those previous versions, this version you saw was quite tame.
They made a pilot of a spin off and it never went off the ground but it has big implications for Annette if you want to think about it as canon. It’s about Annette’s son with Sebastian so it is basically saying that she was pregnant when she left in that car. Bash (the son) finds out about his real dad and decides to meet his father’s family and that’s how he meets Kathryn, her step daughter, and the entire household she’s manipulating.
Fun fact : Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe was married during the filming of this movie..they been got a divorce long time ago but they both have a 19 year old son and a 11 year old too
It's actually awesome to see you guys react to the movies I grew up watching and even remember going to the theater to see 😂.... Thanks for being awesome 😎 guys
The reactions are too funny. This film came out when I was 13 and it basically taught a whole generation of us about the ins and outs (no pun intended) of sex hahaha.
I've never seen this movie so this was my first time seeing it as well. I can't believe how good it was. Amazing story, beautifully written, & I had no idea Sarah Michelle Gellar played this narcissist & she did fantastic. I'm excited for the next adventure. You all have killer legs.
One of my favorites. Kinda random but I always loved that Sarah Michelle Gellar's character, Kathryn, spells her name the same way as me lol. Just thought it was cool along with already liking the movie itself. 💕 Btw I love One Tree Hill but I don't think anyone from it is in this? Maybe you're thinking of Sophia Bush. I see you realized this at the end btw lol.
Love this reaction! This movie is in my top 5 favorites of all time (such a comfort movie for me). The asthetic.. And one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. =D And just that satisfying ending.. xD
I understand how it does seem very quick how he dies, but there are cases of people falling and hitting there head hard enough to die so maybe after the tumble with the cat he had internal bleeding and brain swelling
I have been waiting forever for this to go up!! I love this film so much! The soundtrack is so typical 90s, the story, the actors and the symbolism, which Bryce touched on! When Annette gets the car and puts his shades on 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I personally love stories that weave characters together like this, it was always so crazy to me that Kathryn and Annette never crossed paths. Sarah carried this film on her back! This is one of my fav roles from her just because of how gritty and manipulative it is, so different from her typical roles. And she does look so different with the dark hair. Something interesting is her and Ryan (that played Sebastian) are in I Know What You Did Last Summer together. Horror film that would be great to watch, even if it’s not on the channel! She has one of the most iconic chase sequences. Such a great video, I love your reactions and edits as always. Y’all are just hilarious! I literally burst out laughing when Bryce said “y’all go for it and I’ll watch!” 🤣🤣🤣 I’m glad you enjoyed it, big love💜
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair won best kiss at the VMAs for that kiss🤤 this movie an Wild Things really played a big part in my formative teen years for some reasons 😂🤦🏻♂️
There was a film called Dangerous Liaisons (1988) on this. It is originally a French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos (1782)
Back in 2016 I believe, there was an unaired tv show Cruel Intentions pilot, I watched part of it and I kinda wish it got picked up. In the tv show version, Annette had gotten pregnant and gave birth to Sebastion's son, who I think found the book and his dads car. Anette and Katherine also come face to face again now that they're grown and have an actual mature conversation about Sebastion and everything that led up to his death. I really liked what I saw, check it out maybe?
Fun(?) fact: Sebastian actually did hit Kathryn in the original script, there's a deleted scene of it. They cut it because they thought it made Sebastian look too unsympathetic as a character (as if everything else he did throughout the movie, including revenge porn and sexual assault, didn't already make him an unsympathetic character 🤪). They didn't cut the line where Kathryn tells Ronald that he hit her, though, as keeping it adds to the villainising of Kathryn (who is, in my opinion, the more sympathetic of the two antagonists - she's been unfairly victimised by a sexist culture that dictates she hide her sexuality lest she be branded a 'slut', and is constantly used for her sexuality by boys who don't view her as long-term relationship material because of her sexuality. She has no real friendships and clearly copes by using drugs. None of this justifies nor absolves her of her evil deeds, of course. It's just interesting to think about which of the two siblings this movie wants us to sympathise with more, and why).
This was a hilarious reaction you guys! Your faces seeing all the madness unfold was pure gold! I grew up with this film and I was a teen when I watched this. It's so weird to see you guys take it so seriously, like how messed up Kathryn and Sebastian are. I mean they ARE, but oddly enough, I never found this movie weird , sexual or crazy. It always felt so over the top so those scenes I never took seriously. I also remember really liking the chemistry between Sebastian and Anette so I always felt more invested in their arc of falling in love than any of the other stuff. I always thought of this as a "fun" movie to be honest haha. But then again I grew up with films like "American Pie" so a lot of the things that people point out as messed up or inappropriate in earlier films, (even if the points are valid) never really register that way in my mind. I always separated movies as pure entertainment but it was interesting to hear your thoughts on how messed up this film is 😂And I'm glad you guys appreciated the ending. Sarah Michelle Gellar is such an underrated actress and she killed it in this role. I don't see Buffy, I only see Kathryn, which is so impressive to me considering how she was so well known for Buffy at the time. I'll always remember that tear drop when she gets exposed and the song "Bittersweet Symphony" playing in the background. This film is so ICONIC! I love it! Thanks for reacting! :)
This is basically a modernisation of Dangerous Liaisons. French book supposedly of found letters from the French aristocracy before the revolution. Was made into a movie in the ‘80’s.
Ryan & Reese were dating during the movie and during the scene where she slaps him, it got extra emotional and tore them up. She was pregnant with their daughter Ava. You can see in the pool scene how they try to block her tummy
There are several movie adaptations of the 18th-century French novel on which this was based. The book _Les Liaisons dangereuses_ was extremely controversial and at times banned after it was published in the 1780s; Queen Marie Antoinette had her copy bound in plain leather so she could read it secretly. Like _Cruel Intentions_ , Roger Vadim's 1959 French version _Les Liaisons dangereuses_ was updated to the time when it was made. Stephen Frears' 1988 version _Dangerous Liaisons_ is a more faithful in-period costume drama based on Christopher Hampton's earlier stage adaption. Milos Forman, having lost to Frears in obtaining the play's rights, went back to the public-domain novel for his 1989 version titled _Valmont_ (which is the last name of the character corresponding to Sebastian); it is also set in the novel's time, but Forman cast actors who were a bit younger and prettier than Frears did. There are even newer adaptations by South Korean and Chinese directors setting the story in their own history and lands. Apparently the concept of idle rich aristocrats playing sexual games for dominance over each other is a cross-cultural phenomenon.
fun fact - Reese Witherspoon was a last minute add on because the actor who plays Sebastian was dating her at the time. They have kids together in real life too :)
Fun fact, I don't know if you guys know that Ryan Phillippe (Sebastian) and Reese were married during this time, and based on how old her daughter is, I'm convinced she was pregnant while shooting this.
Well, the movie premiered in early March 1999, Ava was born in early September 1999. Since every movie needs a post-production phase for editing, adding music etc. the shooting was probably already finished or at the very end by the time Reese got pregnant.
5:33 Such a great line. This script is good. It is obviously from the book Les Liaisons dangereuses, which became a film in the 80's and now this. But, interesting to see how zoomers react
