Damn Ange having to just sit on it because he got absolutely owned with the rat thing (100% a squirrel btw, there is no way) is just tough to see man… 😔✊🏼
I mean they physically resemble what we call squirrels but what we call squirrels could just as easily have been called seed rats. Squirrels and rats are closely related anyway.
@@CarlieAndAnge Just to pour some fuel on this fire, I'm pretty sure one of the ways of writing "squirrel" in Japanese is with a pair of characters meaning something like "seed/nut" and "rat/mouse/rodent". So if you translated it literally character by character, it would be... "seed rat".
@@DarwinAwardWinner A short googling seems to confirm what you said. It seems squirrel can be either written as 栗鼠 (Symbol for chestnut and rat) or 木鼠 (tree and rat). There seem to be other variants like "ground squirrel" but all of them have the symbol 鼠/rat(mouse) in it.
As the other poster mentioned, Fern and Frieren are “the same” because they both don’t quite like magic all that much, regardless of their inherent talent with it. In fact, it can be argued they’re largely indifferent if it were just by/for themselves. However, Frieren revealed that her magic brought joy, happiness, and awe to someone she cared for (Himmel) and that made her appreciate magic and continue to seek out arbitrary spells. Similarly, that explanation brings Fern’s subconscious feelings to light; that despite claiming she could have done anything as a profession that would have supported her and been satisfied, she still stuck with magic because it made her adoptive father (Heiter) happy and look at her in awe. So, they’re the same, Frieren and Fern, like Tolkien’s warrior-philosopher Faramir. “I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.” It’s about being strong and accomplishing things not for oneself, but for those whom you love.
100% of the peaple that do card trick learned it to impres friend and family. Unlike sport or music magic would have no meaning without a public to enjoy it
Yeah, we get some more context later of how Frieren's feelings about magic have changed over the years in regards to her past, but this can be gleaned at this point in the story.
I do love that the show sets it up for the stereotypical anime priest isn't really pious and is willing to do anything to avoid death trope, but then it turns out it was just an excuse to keep Frieren around long enough to train Fern so she would have someone to look after her after he was gone.
Agreed! It circumvents a lot of tropes while embracing and building upon many others. Its self aware but not cynical. It’s overall such a refreshing thing. And Heiter is genuinely just the best!
You can always assume tho... that his longevity along with how young he looked compared to Himmel when they were the same age... was him using divine spells to slow down his aging.
Everything on this show is perfect. The character design, the music, the story. I really like the way how they keep this anime calm and don't overload it with too many things. I really love it.
I thought it was very touching the payoff for the sour grapes spell. Such a small thing that gets passed over, but shows she tries to carry memories in any way she can.
Episode 23 just came out yesterday, and I'm pleased to say that all 23 episodes so far are a 10/10. I can't think of anything else that has that good of a track record. The remaining 5 are going to be phenomenal.
@@LuisSierra42 I don't really disagree. Season 1, especially the second half is kind of a slump, and there are other episodes that just go by incredibly slow with not much pay off. Still great anime, but wouldn't give it all a 10/10
@@LuisSierra42 I am into 6 episodes of Frieren right now, but I've got a feeling I will like it like I did with Attack on titan. These shows are different for sure, but I think Frieren has the potential to impact me like AOT did. I'm happy to embark on this bittersweet journey. AOT is definitely 10/10. No, even 1000000/10
This animé guys... it's too much for my heart. The season is soon over and I swear to you I just can't think something I would remove to it. It's just perfect! And believe me I have a very sharpened and critical mind (very often some communities think I'm too harsh with their fav animé when I'm just giving my honest opinion). The impression I got at the beginning of the show is it seemed slow while being fast at the same time and I can tell you that this is one of the strengths of the animé! I love how it makes me connect so deeply to the characters. This show made me cry several times and they didn't even need dramatic scenes to do so. The writing of it is INSANE. My work is being an academic researcher and I often review papers, books' chapters, etc. I can tell you that this has been written by a hard-working and gifted person. I am genuinly amazed by it. I saw some of you comparing the genius writing of this show to Attack on titan and I agree. Hajime Isayama is definitely a genius in terms of writing and is at the top level of the best written mangas (even if some of you might have not liked the writing of the final chapters). And I can easily say that even if the writing here is totally different, Yamada Kanehito is an outstanding writer. And I feel very grateful that this animé started when AOT (snk) finished. It feels just like AOT's writer just passed the torch to the Frieren's one. Once again these shows are completly different so does their writing styles. And yet both of them are at the highest level of their art.
Man this show just knows how to hit you in the feels, I think I teared up in the first 3 episodes. I've honestly treated up whenever it hits its emotional moments
I just got this from another guy who speak german and also react to Frieren. Himmel mean sky or heaven in german, every time they speak about him there's shot to the sky. I'm not crying you are crying
After wiping my tears from seeing the Blue Moon Weed with Frieren, hearing that glorious swell of Evan Call's theme, and watching the repayment of the Flower Crown I said, "She really loved him...." I know you guys are several epis ahead by now, but it's been a helluva ride. I absolutely love this anime with every part of my soul. Frieren, Fern, Himmel, Eisen, Heiter, and all feel like real people. And I laugh, weep, gasp and am so absolutely invested in all of them.
Hold up, hold up, hold up, even 'stralian's don't say squirrel right? It's one my my favorite things to hear non-native speakers try to sound it out, but here we have Ange sounding like like a german trying to say it
The way I see it, Frieren genuinely didn't think much about her journey with the hero party before. A decade is just a small part of her long live, that's why the regret she showed on Himmel's funeral for not trying to spend more time with her friends, for not trying to know more about them is so strong. Before Heither died, she told him to spend as much time as possible with Fern because she already knows that not everyone have as much time as her. Now, only after knowing that regret, after she started revisiting all the places that she have traveled through with them, only now she can appreciate more the memories of the time she spent with the hero party. As for her hobby of collecting spells, it was probably her hobby even before, cause as she said in episode one when she was asked "where are you going now", "I'll just continue collecting spells" or smth to that effect.
Freiren saying that her and Fern are the same in their attitudes about magic is based on the reply Fern gave her. When Freiren asked Fern if she liked magic, she said “somewhat”, which is exactly what Freiren said to Flamme when Flamme asked her 1000 years ago.
You talk like there are bunch of Violet Evergarden-like animes out there but believe me, there is not. Violet Evergarden is really special. Frieren is also a great show. Their starting is kinda similar but they are very different actually you'll realize as Frieren progresses.
It sounds like such an ordinary phrase for a human to say, but thinking back on it, for Frieren to say something like "it took longer than I would have liked" signals such a major change in her way of thinking, compared to how she was before Himmel's death.
Frieren doesn't have a burning passion towards magic. But Himmel liked her silly magic, so she ended up "somewhat" liking magic. . Fern doesn't really have a passion for magic either. But Heiter saw potential in Fern to be a mage and that ended up making her "somewhat liking magic". . Idk if this makes any sense tho but that's my take on why Frieren said we're the same when Fern said she "somewhat likes magic"
the name of the episode being "It Didn't Have to Be Magic" is very poetic. they both desperately wanted to do something, anything, to repay/honor the ones they loved. it didn't have to be magic.
Not entirely true what u have said. Frieren dosn´t like magic because of Himmel but she likes to collect this silly spells because of Himmel. That she liked magic somewhat was clear to here long before she knew Himmel. I guess picking up silly spells was a habit she had from her Master, but when Himmel made a complyment about the silly speels that also became a thing she liked. So its just strong conected because if the other thing were not there this woulnd´t also being there.
Yeah, just like the above comment, Frieren do have burning passion for magic. But you know living for almost forever, that passion may be gone. But himmel rekindle that fire again and she never stop ever since. So it's the same with fern. U can see the flashback her parents are happy that she have talent for magic and she does too. But after they are dead, fern are going to throw it all up until heiter rekindle that love for magic (butterfly scene). Basically they are similar
The big theme is sort of apparent in even the first episode; humanity's ability to strive and affect those around them in the face of everlasting time, as well as what constitutes a life well lived. As time goes on and people fade from the world, what gives their lives meaning is the impact and changes they bring to other people. In contrast to that, there if Frieren, who is an everpresent reminder that although we all strive to do what we can in the time we have, it's also incredibly important to stop for a time and smell the roses, so to speak. More than anything, it's a show about how people behave, the choices they make and why, and as such, it's very much a show that involves itself with the true and proper subject of fiction; behavioural psychology. It's a show about what we do for ourselves, and what we do for others. And neither objective alone is enough to constitute a fulfilled life.
I love this show. Best anime of the last year by far. I continue to resist the urge to read the manga so the show hits harder, but I'll eventually give into it. I like thought out stories of lore and world building history that doesn't go down the same flooded and drowning anime cliche path of "next battle they reach a new level, learn a new technique, break their limits" until the next fight when they do it all over again and again. This is the story of when all that's pretty much said and done. It's history. What mark have you made on the world? What marks did the journey and the world leave on you? What now? This being a story about someone who has already done all the things, did the big quest, and we passively get to walk down memory lane on occasion with someone looking back. The show is such a breath of fresh air in regards to the anime/manga scene.
I was thinking the exact same thing with the connection of Himmel and Thors. Characters with a very limited amount of screen time, yet their impact is felt because of their overwhelming greatness, benevolence and wisdom living on through the memories of the people they touched. I haven't read Frieren so i don't know exactly how everything turns out, but from the anime episodes so far i'm thinking characters like Himmel are meant as the antithesis to Flamme (in this respect). Which you can distinguish by how Flamme influenced Frieren and how Himmel influenced her. Specifically i'm talking about their seemingly opposite views on history.
Fun act all character names are actual German words, You may want to check their German meaning. They reflect their characters so well and that just adds an extra layer to the show
That rat v squirrel banter was hilarious. Hahaha there are no squirrels here in our country but im sure thats not how rats look like here atleast. XD Also, ange's distrust of the demon king dying is my fave bit. XD
It not just [brave/yuusha] by Yoasobi n [everytime, everywhere] by Millet, there are Evan Call from violet evergarden music team/composer bring 73 Background music for all 28 Epsiode of Frieren Anime Update second opening song [Sunny] by Yorushika ❤🎉
You guys should definitely react to the English version of the opening theme! It's by Yoasobi, and it's called "The Brave". It basically portrays Frierens' admiration of Himmel (to keep it very short) and makes you understand the story and her feelings towards him a lot more. In case you haven't watched it: GO WATCH IT, NO TIME TO WASTE!
Sooo happy on this wholesome route from all this depressing stuff of series that you guys watched ahhaahha ill Gladly rewatch the journey with you guys
It's what we would call a squirrel, but in-universe they call them Seed Rats. There's no way to mistranslate it because the name is verbatim, written in katakana.
Not only that its a whole other world. So it could be even someting different. But tbh they act like squirrels. Even that they forgett were they hide there food is similiar to squirrels.
Hey carlie and hey ange! For your next Anime i recommend you watch Mashle:Magic and Muscles. Its basically if ONE Punch Man and Harry Potter had a baby! 😂IT would mean alot if you could watch it when you have time
I'm not sure it's just my opinion but I believe frieren not entirely loving magic might be hinting at the journey of her group against the demon king and seeing how beautiful magic is but also how much damage and hurt it can bring??? Idk tho
I don't feel like you guys actually understand frieren. She doesn't understand or care about how short human lives are, she keeps doing these things that take so much time and she doesn't get attached to anyone so easily. but himmel changed her, his death made her realize and regret about not getting to know him so well and not living the moment. Fern was worried that she would waste their time looking for the flowers and frieren didn't realize that Fern couldn't keep up with her and she can't waste her life doing stupid stuff (I'm not saying looking for the flowers was stupid).
