The TL;DR answer to the extremely good question Clarus asked regarding how devil fruits have names if each one is unique is that they respawn after the user dies. If a devil fruit has been cataloged, that means it's been seen before at some point.

The neon sign was an astute observation. Fun fact, Oda never considered whether the world had electricity or not until the live action creators asked him whether the world had electricity. Something to keep in mind when reading/watching the story.

@@Maxpain350there probably are discontinuities in the story that contradict the sentiment (they never mention whether the fridge is run on electricity, but volume 11 of the SBS bring up generating electricity using a water machine where they use a bicycle like contraption) that said, the intent given the articles is that Oda never put deep thought into whether the world has electricity, so stuff like modern lights or other modern tools that run on electricity don’t usually appear. Or this could just be a case of Oda didn’t put complete thought into the answer when he gave it. But there articles out there that talk about this conversation for the live action.

Clarus is totally correct that the tiny transponder snails are baby snails =) It's been confirmed that the snails don't mind being tamed since they get plenty of food. And the modifications are harmless, any attachments can be removed and the snails returned to the wild. (Maybe not the ones that have been pets since they were babies though 🤔)
@doronrosstuvia3489

This world kind of makes sense because of the plot. It’s an adventure story where the main characters don’t know the world even though they’ve lived in it. And the characters from each island also don’t know much about the world because of the sea beasts, dangers of piracy, and the unpredictability of the world. It allows Oda to play around as much as he wants. At the same time, the lack of access for citizens or civilians gives the military or pirates a lot of power. They can control trade, access, or information. A lot of people I’ve seen have been confused about the map they’re looking for, but if you live in a world that lacks information or access, something like a map is super valuable.
@Phanthief95
@Phanthief95 6 месяцев назад
It also makes sense when you learn more about the World Government, who want to control everything & limit information to the public. As well, with the Grand Line, due to each island having its own magnetic field, normal compasses are useless on it, & because of that & the crazy weather patterns that happen on it, you can end up in one of 7 different routes along it.
@kamatz83
@kamatz83 6 месяцев назад
In a world where the government is able to erase entire islands, maps are actually invaluable for the history only.
@MorenaEvensong
@MorenaEvensong 6 месяцев назад
I think part of the confusion also stems from the fact that in the LA Nami doesn't mention the Calm Belt. I'm pretty sure that's true to the anime/manga, but knowledge of its existence does a lot to clarify why you'd need a map to find what is essentially 'the equator', sort of.

Your little look at the camera when they opened the safe was wonderful, Nerdy. You're right that they change a lot of details to tell their own version of the story, but I also love that they clearly choose to keep certain moments. Especially the flashback in this episode has some clearly drawn shots that you noticed. I love this version of Buggy. He's intimidating and they (of course) go more Dark Knight than the original does. But they don't forget to make him pathetic, which is very important for Buggy. Also, the Japanese version uses the original voice actors, and it's so much fun. The scene with Buggy is especially good.

I don't think Kid Luffy was trying to imitate Iñaki's accent. Also, while not going into spoilery details, there's a few characters from which Luffy could've picked up the accent and I really hope they do take that into account when casting for them. It would have no effect on the storyline whatsoever and it would just make it that little quirk more interesting in the LA show.

I can imagine a specific character being portrayed as a tough Mexican mom in this version to explain adult Luffy's accents Imagine her throwing chanclas at the kids in live action And that won't affect the other two kids' accents as adults because they "left" that place early, while Luffy stayed with her until he's ready to set sail for the first time

I think the lack of "MCU quips" is what made it works. At no point does a character looked at a snail phone and remarked about how weird it is. They all just treat them like a regular phone. And because the characters treat every weird thing seriously and do not call attention to them, it helps the audiences get immersed into the world and just take everything the show throw at them at face value. This world has snails for phones, everyone dressed in extremely polarizing ahistorical outfits from the 1500 to the modern day, there are pirate ships that sails using wind, but the bars have neon signs and electricity. There are fishmen and they have a pool party like a college fraternity, complete with booming speakers. At any point, a lesser writing team might try to add in a line saying how silly these clashing styles and aesthetics are, but that never happened, and so we as the audience also don't question it and just treat this like the fantasy world that it is. It's quite refreshing

Your reactions are truly a delight to watch! Jeff Ward as Buggy was a wonderful surprise for me when I watched the LA for the first time: such amazing casting and performance. And, you're right, it's because he's playing it straight. He, as the character is taking himself 100% seriously and so when he fumbles and does something silly, like punching the glass cage, it's hilarious but still feels real, like he's a person who sometimes does dumb things (like we all do). And despite his fumbling he does come across as a seasoned pirate. Love that you caught Cho Cho's cameo. There's also a few blink-and-you-miss-it references to Ritchie the lion in there as well. I just wish we'd gotten to see more of Buggy interacting with his crew -- Moji cringing away from Buggy made me sad. I understand why we didn't, but Buggy's crew was a bit unique in the East Blue in that his crew genuinely loved their captain and their respect didn't come from being terrified of him. There's one other crew that we meet in the East Blue that isn't all-out terrified of their captain, but the dynamic there is very different and... complicated in ways we don't find out until much, much later.

@MorenaEvensong 6 месяцев назад
Depends on how far you are in the manga. True they're never explained fully, but there is quite a bit of information peppered throughout. Don't think they ever use the 'deal with the ocean' line so much as if you eat a devil fruit you anger the ocean and so it takes away your strength... but realistically that's just two slightly different interpretations of the same thing -- actually, it sounds like explanations from two different regions. Like one is the Goa Kingdom's story and the other is the story Shanks heard for instance (I can't remember who actually gives the explanation in manga canon, but I'm pretty sure it's not Makino).
@ImMegaTarquin

The Bartender is Makino, shanks mentions it while asking for a mop. The lack of female characters is obviously noticeable and I think comes from 2 main aspects. 1. As you mentioned 90's show targeted at young boys, they tend to prefer male characters. 2. It's a fighting show and it's not a good look to have your male cast beating up women constantly. So most female fights end up with them beating the guys or they fight other women.

Just to make a small correction on the devil fruit power. Its only seawater that will take away both their strength AND power. Any other water is usually fine. So they can take showers and baths and be fine as long as it isn't seawater. i could see in her face processing, "wait, what? goldfish?", yeah one piece is crazy like that, but also people go sail because they need to, or else they get stuck in a small island for all their lives, and that creates problems, population grow, and islands are not enough to sustain a high population, they need to leave, gather resources, also there are insanely strong people in that world.

Funny you said it reminded you of Gerard Butler, the Actor who played Garp was The Captain in 300 along side Gerard.

Fun fact: the Actor who plays Garp was in 300 with Gerard Butler. He was in a couple off historic movies. Troy as well.

The earpod snail phone could be a nod to the baby snail phone that is place on the arm like a bracelet.

Really enjoying these reactions. Never got into the anime, my major problem was the trudging pacing. The live action really fixes that and blows me away in ll other aspects too.

He (Garp) probably reminds you of Gerard Buttler, because he acted along side him in the movie 300. He played the Captain of the Spartans, (leonidas/buttlers right hand man)

7:59 I might be bullshittin here but I think sometime in the anime somebody mentions you learn the name of the fruit when you eat it but all that's known before is the class it belongs to.

As far as story goes, I think they did a great job. That said, the way they tell it, while you will know the general story since you've watched past what the LA covers. the LA will spoil some stuff for you in the future.

I don't think the "cell phone" den den mushi change things, they're just a tinier version of the baby den den mushi from the manga/anime. They probably did that so that they don't always have to animate the baby ones, you just have a prop earpiece to use. I try not to think about how it would feel to use one, thought they do look extremely adorable XD
