Why are the adeptus mechanicus and the necron enemies? They seem to keep many of the same philosophies. It would make more sense to me that they’d join forces. The adeptus mechanicus staying allied to the humans on Terra makes considerably less sense to me as they have completely different philosophies. Can someone explain this to me?

@@CompassionOverHate There are a thousand factors at work here, but for the sake of brevity I'll mention just three: 1. Their philosophies are not alike in fact. The core of Mechanicus philosophy is a pursuit of knowledge, even at cost of their own humanity. Most of Necrons would gladly sacrifice all the boons of Biotransference if it meant regaining even a shred of their "humanity". From Necron standpoint, Mechanicus are fools willingly chasing the worst nightmare that Necrontyr suffered and would go to great lengths to undo; from Mechanicus' standpoint, Necrons have achieved Mechanicus' dream of being one with the machine and yet they would willingly cast it away only to get their weak flesh back. For each of them, the other are ignorant of the wondrous boons that have been bestowed upon them. 2. For alliance, there needs to be willingness on both sides. Should Mechanicus desire to ally themselves, it would mean nothing if Necrons saw them as merely another feeble force standing in their way of dominating the galaxy or just pests that have no place in their new empire. Conversely, there would be no alliance if Necrons wished for that to happen but Mechanicus saw them as the very antithesis of everything the Omnissiah and Cult Mechanicus stands for, and which needs to be destroyed - a machine without soul. Should even one side be unable to overcome their bias, there would be no peace. 3. Perhaps the most important factor is the weight of history, loyalty and integrity. If Mechanicus turned to Necrons', would they not be immediately marked as traitors by the entire Imperium and find themselves in an entirely new war? Would all of their ranks agree to that, without the risk of internal schism and civil war at the scale of the one witnessed during Horus Heresy? Would they even be able to trust that Necrons will not simply use them to weaken the Imperium and destroy them both? Unlikely to say the least, impossible to be more realistic. Coversely, would the dynasties agree with allying themselves to some measly apes instead of using this as an opportunity to spread their agenda and seize more power, portraying those who agreed as weak and pathetic? Would they be able to actually find a place within their empire for Cult Mechanicus and overcome their disdain for them? Could they trust Mechanicus to either accept them as they are or help them in trying to regain their "humanity" instead of sezing the first opportunity to destroy them, given Necrons' are considered as abominations by most of Cult Mechanicus? Again, unlikely - or rather, impossible. And this is just what I could immedaitely think of without going into deep lore stuff. Long story short, on surface level it seems plausible, but once you give it an actual thought it's clear why it would never turn out this way.

You're forgetting something: the very reason the Necrons started the war with the Old Ones before they met the C'Tan was to escape their suffering. They were destined to extremely painful, incredibly short lives. They are definitely arrogant, but at the same time: if you were living in constant agony because of a genetic defect, a deal that would give you immortality becomes very attractive.

It’s a perfect start for Necron Lore. I actually just finished the book before starting the project. It’s a unique book for sure, but I found it to be non stop fun. Highly recommend it
