We bought a 200 year old derelict house in Ireland! Episode 2

The Irish Homestead

After 10 months living in a motorhome, travelling Europe, we are now the proud owners of this property with just over an acre of land in Co. Leitrim, Ireland.
There's lots of work to be done, but we are so excited to turn this into our dream home.
It has never been connected to the mains electricity or had running water!
We are doing it all ourselves and want to stay off grid if we can.
Feel free to follow our journey transforming this place into a home for our family.
Becky, Sam, Isabella, Euan & Benji the chihuahua.

if you want to clear rough ground, a goat or two roaming around scoffing everything will be much easier than a mechanical mower. goats are really good for stripping back all the plant growth.

We are from the North of England, so we are pretty used to rain. Although everyone says it's worse here so far, I haven't noticed a huge difference. That may change, though, I guess, in a few months' time! 😅

Congratulations on getting this land and project! We got ours just over a year ago, also a ruined, derelict old cottage but in Scotland. Don't let doubters phase you, when we were there we just knew it was for us. There may be roadblocks on the way and you may lose patience but I am trying to see it as a process and not the final destination 💚

Thank you. We are feeling a lot more positive this week. We love it here but I think we had a few days of worrying that we had over-faced ourselves with the amount of work ahead. We are feeling confident now though and trying as you & many others have advised to take it one job at a time & not get ourselves so stressed.

When I was a kid & I used to see old falling down houses in the middle of nowhere, I used to say to my dad, "buy that & stick a caravan there & do it up"! He used to just laugh at me😡 Fast forward a good few years & someone bought the houses I'd said it about & were doing just that. One was on Anglesey & the other in Etherow. They were both done beautifully & now would cost an arm & a leg & then the other arm & leg on top to buy now!! Whenever we drove past them when they were finished, I used to say to him, "remember when I told you to buy that & do it up?"😂 Nobody loves a smart a*$e though😂😂

I live in the countryside in the US and there is nothing like coming home to the peace and serenity of nature. The trees, open space, birds singing, frogs chirping and so much wildlife to observe. I saw you guys on Louise & Emily's CamperVibes channel & thought I'd bob across. As soon as I heard your accent at the beginning , I thought, 'she sounds from around here'😄 I live near Marple & have a friend that lives there, another lives in Marple Bridge, another in Compstall & my nephew plays cricket at Charlesworth. I'm over Saddleworth, but lovely areas. I thought I'd start back to where you start with your new property & adventures. The ground there sounds wet & boggy under foot, but I'm guessing it dried out after seeing you more recently on CamperVibes vlog. I also met Toby on there & I think you getting him a friend is what he needs, they like company🥰 Sam came across as such a lovely guy & you helping them out showed me what kind of people you are🥰 So, new subscriber here & looking forward to catching up with all you've done so far & getting to know you all. We aren't quite as good as Emily & Lou at the whole comedy & editing but hopefully it's passable lol. We lived in house in a village in Italy that was built in 1849. The interior wood shutters on the windows were common back then. No drapes on windows then. No indoor plumbing either. They had a small shed that was attached to the home. It had space for the animals and separately was a small room for a toilet and bath. Which I am sure was not added on until well into the 1940’s because the town had no sewage until after WW2. No indoor water either. The town still had the communal place where the ladies did their laundry. And they could get water for the house. It was near a spring. I live in Canada now and can’t imagine going back. Lived from 1981-83 that was plenty.

Lots of moments of excitement and panic too will come; but the ideas will fall into place gradually; don't hesitate to take ideas from wherever they come, sometimes it opens up perspectives that we hadn't thought of! @duncancremin1708
@duncancremin1708 8 месяцев назад
That seems to be the case. You could be unlucky, if there’s an awkward neighbour, because technically you’re changing the use of at least part of the property, from agriculture to residential. Usually that’s not a problem, but we had a difficult, anonymous neighbour who objected to us parking on our own property, so rather than deal with all that, we park on the road outside. We’re here long enough now that I’m sure we could try again, but we’re used to it now.
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead 8 месяцев назад
Wow, that's frustrating! People can be so odd! So far, we have been treated wonderfully here, and our neighbours seem great. I think you have been unlucky for sure. I mean, why stop you from parking on your driveway, utterly bonkers! Hope you get it sorted & pray we don't encounter such pettiness!
@duncancremin1708
@duncancremin1708 8 месяцев назад
In fairness to all concerned, our property didn’t have a driveway as nd we were parking in a field. The planning officer who came to see us explained that that constitutes a change of use, from agriculture to vehicular and there had been a complaint. Of course, he wanted me to engage with the planning process and get permission to park in my own garden, but the budget wouldn’t allow, even if my principles did! We will never know which individual decided to make life awkward, rather than speak to me, nor why, but everyone else has been super and we have excellent friends here who support us in every possible way. That’s the Irish way.
