We’ve been renting heavy equipment on our property for the past two years. Over the past many months, we’ve been entertaining the idea of buying our own piece of equipment since we not only need to rent so often (especially for the upcoming house build), but also because we have way more uses for a backhoe than we rent for. One day, Jesse was checking Craigslist last-minute before we left town for a day and low and behold, a great backhoe was just listed locally, for a reasonable price. We drove immediately to go see it, everything checked out, and now we’re the owners of a case backhoe!

I run my own construction business here in Qld Australia, last week I paid $5k for a paint machine, I nearly shit my pants parting with the money and spent days afterward talking to anyone who would listen about my justifications for said purchase. Long story short -NEVER waste an opportunity. Excellent purchase guys!!! I don't give a shit what u spend your hard earned $ on. Just stay real.

I was wondering when you were going to pull the trigger on this. One of the BEST investments you could have made, and IMHO, you did it the right way, the first time. No farting around with Dingo's, Bobcat's or Kubota's, you went right for the jugular. Nice... Case 580 = small enough for small jobs, big enough for big jobs, plus it has a Cummins power-plant that sips fuel. Much love, You Two.

I liked the comment from the seller.... "Never did much with it, just used it". Hopefully they did the scheduled maintenance. If not, one of the most important things you can do when buying a used piece of equipment is perform the maintenance. Change the fluids and filters. Replacement parts for these things are VERY expensive. Get yourself a good grease gun, use the proper grease and GREASE that baby regularly.

Love your videos and don't believe I've missed any!!! Jesse, you are one of the luckiest guys on earth!!! To have a good woman like Alissa who pulls on her boots and gloves to share in the hard work it takes to do what you guys are doing is outstanding. Thanks for sharing with us the great journey you two are on, you can be very proud of your accomplishments.

Congratulations! My dad had a '90 Case 580K for his construction business. It has all the same features that yours does. I put in a lot of hours in on it, those are great workhorse machines! A few tips: If you are not using the extendahoe, there should be a hole in the dipper boom where you can insert a pin that goes all the way through. If you install that pin, it will provide strain relief to the seals on the extendahoe cylinder. You should particularly do this if digging up stumps or large rocks. Take really good care of the hood latch; keep it lubricated and replace worn parts. What I have seen happen is they get dirty and dried out, don't want to release easily, so someone takes a hammer to it to open the hood, they bend it, and then you have a hood that won't latch. If you are using it a lot, every day or two take a grease gun around and put a few squirts into all the grease fittings (there are a lot). It's easy to forget about them, but take the time and effort and it will pay off in the long run! Best of luck!

Having had a limited amount of time on a back how I can tell you it's probably the best piece of equipment you could have bought. Sure it won't do everything but it can do a lot. It will pay for itself in the long run. Excellent purchase.

Alyssa, THANK YOU, for your time in the edit studio. I've been watching you guys a while and I am very impressed in Alyssa's work ethic. You guys are very good at showing detail also. I worked years in the petroleum pipeline industry and operated backhoes for most of it. Alyssa, you will make a very good operator with patience, practice, and finesse. Small motor control in the hands will have you pulling 3 levers at once to make change from a dime. One suggestion I will make Jesse on the tractor. Get a welder to weld grab chain hooks, sized to your logging chains, to the center of the front bucket and also on the flat of the backhoe bucket just after the radius. This will be you best and safest lifting point. Don't thread the chain through the backhoe bucket. It becomes a shear when you accidentally curl to far. The extended a hoe can be a great crane for lifting those house timbers around. Keep the vids coming. Power to the labor minded.

I'm so happy for you too . You have needed this equipment for a long time. I have a super LT 40 and the amount of production we get done with having a skid steer around to move the logs is probably 3 to 4 times what we could do by hand and if you're going to build A timber frame house you're going to have large Timbers and they're too heavy to move by hand. Think about a set of forks it will make your life so much easier. And I agree with you about letting the wife run the equipment I'm currently teaching my wife how to run our E80 excavator I think will just another five hours she's gonna do a great job with our equipment.

Plowing with this model is very doable. Here in the Monadnocks of NH, in late fall we drop the back hoe then swap it out for a drag blade, we put on all 4 tire chains (a must for stopping on ice and not falling off the mountain side), then we add a bolt on Minute-Mount plow mount to the bucket. This allows us to back drag a closer cleaner path around items or buildings of importance. The Traditional snow-plow makes moving snow less strenuous on your loader. Trying to push a bucket loads of heavy snow long distances will lead to failures on that sweet little '91. After plowing the bulk of the snow out of the way, drop the Minute-Mount and bucket the rest over the embankments. If you Bee's wax the inside of the bucket or use one of those lanolin base undercoating the snow won't stick so bad to that plow mount and the bucket's interior surface. Best of luck...

Congrats on the acquisition. That tractor is a very good piece of equipment, 91 isn't old. If it don't smoke like crazy at startup or use oil in excess there's a promise of more usable time in it's life. You were right about the turbo'd models. Best have a sound tractor with equipment as one unit instead of attachments, there lies more issues. Hope to see more with it getting things done. You guy's are dealing with your project with attitude and faith in all around you and family support, that rocks. keep on moving on.

If you do so much changes around house as they right now, it is more reasonable to buy this. If you need it for a few hours a year, you will rent it, as you mentioned. Will need some time/money to keep it alive, but for there amount of work around it make sense... :)

to the comment below, in my watching soooo many hours of your vids (and loving it... them?)... i truly feel that so much of the video effort is to share your knowledge of your experiences on so many aspects of this homesteading. THANK YOU, Alissa, for doing this. i am not, and will not be (at this point of my life) a homesteader. i got into watching you for your Solar sessions, but was hooked instantly on your (both your) presentation styles and the diversity of chores that you have had to master, the problems and the way you set on moving towards solutions, your honest of having messed up some stuff and still those were lessons learned not only for you, but to all of those who are, or will be, attempting similar things as they go through their experiences of starting up new homesteading. you should be so very proud of the work you've done on your place, but just as proud for the dissemination of VALUED information to hundreds and hundreds of people in, or near your situation. and me? you've given me at least a hundred hours of interesting entertainment (and, yes, i have and will use some of the knowledge). Some add ons to consider is to get your neighbor with a welder to put three chain hooks on the top of your front bucket , one in the center and at each end . Then put one on the center of the rear bucket too . Makes managing logs much easier and many other uses . All so if you can get any maintenance records that may exist would be helpful . The oil and filters are very important ,if you don't know how old the oil and fluid is you have to assume that it is old and dirty . I didn't see any grease on the joints so it probably needs greasing , the pins and sleeves wear down quickly even with light use if not greased often , the sun and rain can clean them out before you know it . I only keep enough fuel in mine to keep it on a 1/4 tank , better to add fuel often than to have to deal with old fuel . Good luck

Don't worry about what some people think or say in relation to your use of equipment. I bet 99% of viewers understand that with the limited time you have, it's skill and effective use of resources that counts, not what the person operating a certain piece of equipment has between their legs. The fact that this conversation is even happening is, in my eyes, ridiculous. Keep up the work! Love from Germany!

Great job guys, you will not regretted owning this equipment. Its nothing like waking up in the morning knowing that you have a work-horse waiting on you and not the other way around like rental equipment. Probably the next step is to built a small overhang to keep her from the elements. Maintenance is key to longevity on your new investment as you mentioned. Also, you guys might want to built a small fuel depot to store diesel for your equipment. There will be days that fuel prices comes down and you have a place for storage. Oh, and I think you guys can use off-road diesel/red diesel it much cheaper than regular diesel.

Alyssa: Thank you for the high quality of editing in your videos. From what I've seen on RU-vid, your work is far above average. You pace things well, provide plenty of visual interest with appropriate audio, and present your topic clearly. I expect you'll improve over time, which I think is rather exciting. Of course, none of this would matter if you didn't already have a sense for lighting and framing, and the dedication to record hours and hours of material. Thank you both for that. Top tip: Unless you can store the backhoe undercover through the winter when you probably wont be using it. Liberally apply thick grease to the pistons to avoid the metal pitting which inevitably leads to seal failure. Good luck from the UK and keep up the good work. Pretty soon, this piece of equipment means they can get started on working on the foundation and then, depending on permits and inspection time frames, will start the building process...

Alyssa is awesome! Great piece of equipment . Now you need a set of pallet forks for it. They will save so much lifting of lumber etc. . If you put everything on skids and pallets you can rearrange everything in your yard in minutes! Forks are a definate "must have". Congratulations!

You have to understand Jesse's personality though. He is one of those guys who has a stream of a hundred things running through his head and he doesn't MEAN to cut her off but you must interrupt someone to point out the deer in the background...he did apologize right after as well.

You cannot go wrong with good equipment. I have a 2010 Massey Ferguson tractor and I use the heck out of it and I bet I have had 4 or 5 offers for it because it does not have the tier 4 emissions. You did well and it will make life so much easier for everything including the timber. You will get your moneys worth in the long run. Alyssa is really good with that camera.
