The year long joke has become reality. We're starting a base model Cobalt club. In our first episode, Turbo Tim shows off his "new" Cobalt LS and what he's done to get it running.

2005 Saturn ion 5 speed here. A set of falcon azenis tires and it's an absolute blast at autocross and road course time trials. Most fun I've ever had in a car! Can't wait to get sway bar and coilovers!

My base 07 has been on the zzp Dino a few times. Last time it was for a turbo kit. Now I have an extra motor sitting in my garage to put internals in and swap for more boost.

As the first (and only) Cobalt running in the aforementioned GridLife Sundae Cup, I can actually speak to the drums! Overall, they held up just fine at Atlanta Motorsports Park, never really ran into losing brakes, moreso dealt with lockup (no ABS)! If you do keep the drums like me, look at the Porterfield brakes shoes. Several of the Sundae Cup guys run them for better performance.

I got to do the Octane Academy when I bought my Focus ST. Throwing around the Focus and Fiesta ST around a track was so much fun and still felt very fast. Definitely don't need a ton of power to have a blast.

Brings me back to 08 when i bought my first cobalt which was a 5 speed 2006. slow but was fun throwing its weight around. Didn't have her long thanks to a deer. Now her it is 2022 and i just bought a 06 cobalt ss supercharged that has 250k miles and needs a lot of work to bring her back but it's going to be a fun project.

The chevy cobalt is a great sleeper against some Hondas and other tunners out there. Not a bad choice for someone who wants a first car to tune.

What u said is true for the most part,but i would rather start with a low power cobalt on a street course than a high powered car that i have to make massive adjustments to my driving style

This is really cool guys. I've been restoring my Pontiac G5 gt for about 3 years now. Got a lot of suspension parts from zzp. Tim for wheels you should do pontiac g5 or g6 wheels in either a 16 or 17 size. Should be able to find them pretty easily in your local junkyard. Can't wait for episode 2.

I have 2006 Basic Cobalt. Full Megan suspension, eibach front and rear torsion bars, 17 in rims 25 off set Khumo tires . Really hugs the turns

My '07 is already a riot. I'd love to lower it an inch, stick some Ronal R10's on it and change nothing else. The 07 makes 148hp stock, coming from a 120hp fiesta its a big difference.

We gotta see more of Spec Base!!! I'm building an 06 L61 5sp coupe. As of now I'm sticking with the original engine, trans and ECU but I do have access to a totalled ss that I may swap everything into. I want to see what I can do to the NA car before swapping everything. Im focusing on weight reduction and simplicity at the moment. Adding rigidity and cutting out unnecessary junk has been a lot of fun.

Drums will be fine on a road course. If you want a performance brake shoe check out Porterfield. When Chevy developed the Sonic race car they tested it extensively and recommend Hawk DTC 60 pads front w/ OEM rotors and OEM shoes in the rear w/ oem drums. OEM shoes should be fine. For road course fun 15 inch wheels are ideal and plentiful. For example Drag wheels like the DR-34. If I didn't have the Sonic race car, Spec Cobalt would be fun! On a heavy braking track like Blackhawk Farms you may want some simple brake ducting or upgrade rotors for better cooling.

Good info! I have heard a few things about this Chevy spec-ed Sonic race car, but have never actually seen it. Would love some more info. I heard something about special dampers they had made for it as well.

Im going to buy a base model cobalt/G5/Ion coupe and turn it into a rally car, just have to find one for cheap, but it's not hard to find cobalts for cheap. I would love to see base model mods. I have a SSEI and that's how I got introduced into you guys when I started modding my 3800 and I saw how cheap the ecotec platform was, even cheaper than the 3800 and I'm here for it. You guys are a great company.

I bought this exact car new in 2007 and am still driving it today. 250k miles… alot of people say they are junk but maybe I got lucky or something? Anyway all the repairs I’ve ever had on it I’ve done myself using RU-vid videos lol.

That 2.2 ecotec and 4T45E are solid if you do the basics. Have 167k on my '10. Oil residue on my valve cover, that's it. Replacing the gasket soon. Did a trans flush @70k and a pan drop & filter replacement @ 130k. High mileage oil & a 10 micron filter. Coolant flush as well. Easy.

I have the same, been driving it for a decade only 125k miles though because it's salvaged. The only repairs were because of salty roads up north. Everything underneath was replaced because of rust. Everything else is fine. Just hit the circulate button everytime you drive it to not get the clicking.

König Hypergram can be had in a 17x8 or 17x9 with a 4x100 PCD. Probably one of the lighter weight options too.

Oooohhh man this changed my perspective on what i want lmao. Originally i did want to make it my first build since its my first car. But there isnt as much stuff, so i was just making it as a cosmetic daily driver for show. I was going to try and get a genesis. But now since you guys might have a chance to make to cobalt of my dreams, ill be putting that as a pin for future invesments:) goodluck zzp!!!

Make an aluminum bracket for the rear caliper swap, sandwich it between the wheel bearing and rear beam. Boom disc brake swap.

Brake lines are a problem. They meet up center of the hub to the wheel cylinder. If you're familiar and have a line kit it's not a big deal. Otherwise it's a problem.

Never understood why these came with 4 lug. Mine isnt an SS and came with 17" 5 lug though it is the LT 2T. GM was cheap of course and used 205/50s. Doesnt matter if it's a NA 4 banger, 205s are skinny. Quickly replaced those with 225/45. They all weigh about the same. I can only assume 4 lug hubs were always sufficient unless an SS. Those all came with 18" 5 lug I believe.

I have a 2009 Cobalt LT2 sedan with the 5×110 bolt pattern and I'm slowly adding things to the car but finding aftermarket parts is tough and right now I have a Pontiac G5 front bumper along with LT Sport Coupe skirts and 18×8 wheels with a +35 offset but hopefully later on buy coil overs for my car

Talking about losing weight. An easy way to weigh your car might be to talk to your local co-op. See if you can just drive up onto the big scale. Truck stops might work too if they have a weigh station.

This would be a killer series! Please continue this series! And maybe a “how to make a base model into a ss” or as close as possible. And can u explain why the xfe trans and motors are actually pretty sought after? I heard the internals are stronger and the trans has taller gears but I’m not sure.

I'll come out! I've got a 2.2 f23 base with a very similar setup but need an exhaust bad, mine is 5 lug swapped with front and rear drilled and slotted ss brakes on lnf wheels

Hhr wheel bearings are the same in all aspects but run the even bigger 5 lug bolt pattern.

What about a light ABS plastic skid plate under the rear to limit or eliminate the drag from the bumper. Also possible cheap ducting to the brakes from the lower grill. Also interior removal if want to get into a little more serious discussion on weight bias etc

Yes, for sure. Rear bumper will probably get cut, spare tire well cut out, diffuser added. SS front bumper, removing the foglights to use for brake ducts. Interior is getting a uninsulated carpet, rear seat delete, 2 race seats, race wheel. Goal is to make it light so power isnt required.

You guys should make a engine mount swap for a 2.4 ecotec engine from a chevy equinox. They make more power and torque stock compared to the cobalt 2.4.

Not much more. You can actually use the manifold & tb from a 2.4 for a boost without needing a tune if I'm not mistaken. 2.4 was only a slightly larger head, larger intake & tb.

Cobalts are great for AutoX. We have a few that we AutoX and road course with, Tylers LSJ, Noahs LNF, this base model, and my Sky.

Finally you guys are doing something for the base model cobalt . I have a 07 Chevy cobalt 2.2 Ls I have done suspension, control arms ,exhaust, Short shifter , Cold air intake ,rims. Hopefully you guys Come out with Tune to really wake up the motor Or just making more fun to drive

We do sell a tune for it. When put a base tune on this specific car in the video and it really woke it up. We will do a dyno video and I can always reflash it back to stock for a B&A.

Tire rack has rpf1s in 17x9 4x100 on "closeout". I can't think of a smarter wheel choice for a track car.

I AM SOOOOO HERE FOR THIS BUILD!! I have an auto 08 cobalt I'm building as well and have been going crazy trying to figure out brake setup and wheel fitment. I'm swapping out headlights today and getting taillights, ZZP parts, and maybe even a body kit soon. Got any turbo advice?

You'd probably be better off with a S/C kit as the 2.2 doesnt have strong internals like the LNF 2.0. Brakes require a conversion to disk in the rear & for wheels, 8.5 or 9s with 225/45 or 235/40 or 45 depending on clearance would be ideal.

If you saved everything you'll be ok but remember only the SS had 4 disk. Mounts could pose a problem as well. If you saved the cradle as well you wont have that potential problem.

As far as base models go, it still baffles me that y'all don't support the 3800 fbody. Some of the stuff you sell does work for us. But having long tubes, bigger throttle bodies or a TB conversion kit to get rid of the electric one, supercharger, turbo, and or nitrous kits would be awesome. Ik I'd buy long tubes for my m90 bird if they were available and cheap enough compared to the old fff ones they made like 15+ years ago lmao.

I agree, that is the one platform that none of us at ZZP has owned. All it would take is for one of us to buy one and get passionate with it, but we all have so many projects currently. I currently have 5 vehicles, 4 of which are all different ZZP platform cars, all at or nearly fully modified.

@@TurboTimZZP respect having many projects. I'm between a few myself. Just would be nice to have a reputable company that actually supports this platform so we don't have to get so creative. Imo it's a better platform to go fast with, compared to the wbody because with it being an fbody you can take advantage of all the V8 fbody suspension, trans, and rear end aftermarket support. There's actually trans and diff's available to make big power with like 900+, without constantly breaking a fwd 60e, even after spending a few g's on it just to break all over again. Like it baffles me that trans upgrades like the gmr 3.29 1" chain are going for 2k easy
