Don’t think the passive way will work. Afraid their holes will be a problem for tucker- hope he don’t step in one of them. That’s dangerous for his legs. Hopefully they can’t dig a hole in the new ground you’re putting down.

On the wall looks like mud dabbers. If it looks like it's made of clay/dirt that's it. They are completely harmless but look like hornets or wasps and they eat spiders. If you break the thing on the wall it will have spider carcasses. 😜 Congrats it's beautiful! I have my horses on my property and nothing better.

You are such an inspiration, amazing and you inspired us to create our RU-vid channel with how incredibly natural and real you are. We went through a really tough patch last year, we lost our farmland and ended up renting a really rundown patch of land. Its nothing like what you have but creating the videos is spurring us on and keeping us going. One day, you never know but we might be in a position to have a farm again. We can only live in hope.

Hi, we bought an old farmhouse 16 years ago in Germany. There was an old cow stable in the barn. We took all the separating walls down except for one loose box for emergencies. Then we made a big opening for the horses to go in and out at will with a curtain to be drawn in case of bad weather or deer flies. In front of this we created a big paddock with adjoining arena which is open for the horses when not in use for training. The most usefull feature is the tackroom and grooming area in the open but under a roof with access to cold and warm water. We have got there inbuilt racks as well which I use for storage of all the medical stuff and special food things. When you showed the big space behind the barn in which you plan an arena I thought of a round pen or a paddock for the winter. Planning these things please look at the lay of the land: where does the water go in a heavy rain? What about sun and shade? Where to put the dung heap? What about accessability for a tractor and the vet, farrier, etc.? There is so much to consider. Maybe the best would be to look at the layout of the stable/barn and ask the previous owners (if possible) about how they worked the stable. People who work a stable will have made things to suit practicability. So, go ask your neighbors how they do it, maybe offering a day of help in their stable. This way you will get to know how they do it, what you like and maybe make friends who might help you out if needed. I congratulate you on this big project and wish you all the best.

It’s a dirt dauber nest, they’re harmless. They actually catch little spiders and put them up in there, then lay eggs and the babies eat the spiders. It’s very cool to watch them make the nest.

The groundhogs won't move out on their own...but you will figure it out. Congratulations. We bought our land about 14 years ago, it's always a process. Enjoy making it your own!

Congrats! Thats super exciting! Could you do a renovation series because they are super fun to watch. Definitely get pest control out for the ground hogs and that nest because it's probably not something you want around. I think the barn could use some lights and maybe a few touch ups here and there and a good paint! I'd love if I moved at the old owners left a halter maybe you could get a horse that size if it doesn't fit tucker or trade it in at a local tack shop. Just an idea for the isleway of the barn maybe concrete because that way no ground hogs can destroy it. Can't wait to see how it looks in the future!

OMG. make it white and brown, clean it up, make new floors, have some horses dogs and barn cats, and throw in some of her ideas and it is my dream barn! love the idea of having a big property. IDEA. a lesson program!? you could have a riding one or a training one! training, you could have people bring their own horse and you could teach them. riding, you could have lesson horses and you could teach people to ride. i think the most expensive one would be riding because you need horses, halters, lead rope, brushes and staff to help. so the training program sounds good!(hopefully):)

I would make the door to the barn aisle taller and wider so that you can bring horses through and I would turn that room with the pitch fork into a feed/storage room because it is indoors and safe. Whatever you guys do I'm sure It will turn out great❤️

That farm is gorgeous! I’m trying to get my grandparents to get 3.8 acres of land that they can build a farm on, and I can own a horse on! Update: I found a 100 acre farm that already has a barn with loads of stalls, a house with a pool, and plentiful fields and acres with it! They have no budget and seem to really like it! We are planning on seeing it soon! (But we will also look at the 3.8 acre No house area!)

I've always called those insects "mud dabbers." They don't sting, but build their nests from mud... Exciting for you!

Awesome new place, enjoy that! My advice, don't trust the ground hogs will move on. You bring grain, bedding and things they can chew up. I'm normally all about letting animals live, but take care of them now.

The nest on the inside barn door are dirt dobber’s which look like a wasp but they do not sting you. They are actually good to have because they kill spiders! Becky @ GBH farms in Texas

Congratulations to you! It’s always exciting when you start to make your dreams come true! It’s so typical horse owner to show the barns and not your own new house…lol! 🤣🤣💕 Lots of tasks to get done. The first I would do is get to your local farm supply guy and get some pellets to get rid of those ground hogs/ gophers ASAP. They breed like rats and it looks like no predators to keep em down. Get the farm strength pellets and application information and get that done first. Here in western Canada, gophers will attract badgers who hunt them underground and who create miles of tunnels underground. They digger the deeper holes called ‘leg breakers’ by cattle ranchers and farmers because your horses hoof will fit right into it and it’s about 2-3 ft deep . The badgers are large, aggressive and they also breed families. Do mow and inspect every corner of your land for these holes. Make friends with your neighbours. Most ranchers have info as well as firearms to deal with those kinds of critters so ask around for advice for your situation. They’ll probably offer to help you out. The buildings are old and likely not built to any codes and likely got some dry rot or maybe termites. I’d get a local professional builder to come and inspect the place also pretty quick. And finally….do your research on GOATS for pets! They are really curious and really good at getting out and breaking things and eating stuff they shouldn’t. So exciting!! Congrats. Don’t be embarrassed that it’s not all super fancy right now. As you said it’s totally usable. I know some horse RU-vidrs have these super fancy barns and stalls that have fucking chandeliers on the ceiling and look like a mansion on the inside. But that’s not what horse riding/keeping looks like for most people!! Yours is very real and organic and I love that.

ohhh you have grass. Hubby and I have invested lots of time and effort (and mone) on our new property getting grass to grow. But, we were blessed with a good barn that needed (some) reno, but it was one of the reasons we purchased the property. It's a long trip (I hate the fake 'journey' being used so much) to perfection, but, we too are determined. congrats again!!!!

We just moved from Georgia to Alabama about 4 months ago and got 36 acres we have a old roting barn that I wish was still usable. I LOVE your new land!

Those bug things are dirt dobber nests! They're fantastic to have around (look like wasps but don't sting or bite) they eat spiders, wasps, etc and they're quite pretty- kind of iridescent black colored. Congrats on your farm!

The first thing I would do is get more animals. The great thing is… you own it!! You can take as long as you like to make any changes! Then you can change your mind and change it again! Carmella - I don't know your location - and wonder what your seasons will be on this Lovely property?! That's the best way to do it - have the horses at home ! The barn set up is unique - figure out how to add some natural light. So happy for you - excited for more (I live vicariously these days !) For the ground hogs - get a couple of dogs - they'll soon move out. Knock down the wasp nest clean when its inactive and they won't be back with activity around the place

Super, super nice property- congratulations! Love the idea of cross-fencing the big field. Your arena area is plenty large enough for work at home. Some thoughts based on our struggles with 2 horses at home with us on 2 acres in SE Texas since 1994: Before you start any major project, check your DRAINAGE. Where does the water flow right now when you have a heavy rain? What's the ground like when it's saturated? Where are you going to get erosion once all that grass is gone? MATS are your friend! Mats over any stable footing that can drain (your bluestone, our decomposed granite) will pay you back in saved labor (grooming and ground maintenance with foot traffic). Water in the barn is nice! How do you keep the PIPES from freezing? You have power in the barn; could you have one of those tankless water heaters for warm water? Our climate is hot, so our local barns are all about windows/doors that can stay open, fans, etc. In your existing barn and stalls, you could cut out pieces between the studs and hang the pieces on sturdy hinges, so you'd have windows you could open for LIGHT/ventilation or close to protect from weather. Our horses really, really love their open run-in SHED. We have portable cattle panels if we have to close somebody up due to injury, etc. WATER troughs. How will you keep them from freezing in the winter? Do you need access to power for that? How will you clean them? Where's the water go if you dump one over to scrub? HAY storage. Two horses on one acre in our area = dry lot. You might be able to keep grass on yours if you can rotate pastures, but you'll really want somewhere dry and covered to store about 50 bales. That's about 8 pallets' worth of space for us (stacking 5 high). FEED storage. Get some metal garbage cans for your feed. Metal, because the rats will gnaw holes in the bottom of plastic ones. If you put feed bags or loose feed in your current feed bin, the mice will be sooooo happy. (And cockroaches) The heavy lid was designed to keep out things like raccoons, but it won't stop the little critters. Cross ties in the barn are an excellent luxury! I would rather have had a good, solid pair of cross ties outdoor in a well draining wash rack with shade, though. (Still don't have that at home!) One solid post (or tree) where you can unbreakably tie a horse is an absolute necessity. I learned to love the Blocker tie rings for safety. Manure! Will you remove it? Will you compost it? Will you spread it on the pastures? Two horses make two big manure buckets' worth of waste per day (more if they're on shavings in a stall), so have some kind of plan before the horses get there. Do you have any local ordinances about poop vs water runoff, etc? Trailer parking, shavings storage.... worth figuring out before you start putting in fences. Gates: please, replace your existing gates with rounded corners with something modern that's meant for horses, not livestock. Horses will get a body part stuck in the "wedge" between the rounded top and the wall or fencepost. Ask me how I know *eyeroll*. Love your existing tack room! Keep your halters, grooming tools, fly spray, etc etc in there. Keep your saddles in the house. Good leather will last forever if you can keep it somewhere with kinder temperatures and humidity control. You can use those "saddle stands" for drying saddle pads or hanging blankets in the winter. If you can put horse-safe mesh wire on your exterior fences around the property, you'll have a lot less headaches with other people's dogs/livestock/wildlife getting in with your horses. We love our wood fences; yes, they do need maintenance, but we can maintain them with simple tools and stuff from the hardware store. And they break in an emergency, which was good for us. If you're on a busy highway or other hazard, maybe not so good. Hay/feed supplementation: When you have time, after the horses are settled, see if you can find someone in the area to give you a soil or grass/hay analysis. For the longterm health of your horses, and especially their hooves, it's really really useful to know how to supplement. We're heavy on iron here, so I have to keep that in mind when I am picking feed. Sorry for the treatise! You have a really nice property and great ideas. These thoughts are just what I'd with someone had told me when we first set up horsekeeping at home. Good luck!

So for painting I highly recommend what I did in my barn which was whitewash instead. Basically a mix of lime, water, and some glue (to help it stick) it is so much cheaper than paint and because it is basic it really helps keep down the bugs. Plus the white color will just brighten everything up a ton.

I've been watching your videos for a few months since I got obsessed with horses (again, after 40+ years). I've been taking riding lessons since May 2022 (once or twice a month is all the time I have). I love your attitude and how you treat your horse. And your humor! So excited for you!! I hope you do a series of making this place your own. As for the gophers... I don't know if there is any way to get rid of them other than being very aggressive. We have gophers at our place and they have pretty much taken over our pasture. We've been extremely lucky that our horses don't step in them (knock in wood) but they're a menace.

How cool! I think with some cleaning and painting this could be a dream barn!

Before you cross fence, consider that a large pasture is nice for the horses, gives them room to move and play.

One HUGE thing I’d recommend is familiarize yourself with the property Basically what I mean, just look around maybe see if there’s any potential threats or things that could spook horses badly (I’m not a horse person this is just something I thought of) mainly Incase there’s any rodents living nearby or just really genuinely make sure everything looks okay before you get really comfortable :D (also check for wasp nests and stuff that might be in the barn or in a fence post/fence)

Oh my goodness! I bought my own horse property which was my life dream last Summer, and it's been so much work getting the place safe/the way I want it for my horses. Your place is so cute and tons of room, so much potential! Totally do videos on the work you do on it.

The weird bug nest thing is a mud dauber nest. I have several around my barn. Mud Daubers look like wasps but I’ve never had them come after me. Usually if I find one of their nests I’ll knock it down and the only thing that ever comes out of it is dead larvae.

Found hogs don’t go away all that easily. My barn (which has over 50 people in and out each day and 35 horses) got a ground hog problem last year and they didn’t go away til we called a trapper and they relocated the ground hogs and this year, we’re just starting to see signs of them popping up again.
