This last year has been a crazy one, with many ups and downs. Today I want to share the story of our first year here on the land.
Want to support us and these videos? Find me on Patreon: / ourportuguesehomestead
New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten and our toddler Puck on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands a little over a year ago, and moved south in our old campervan. Last year we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. Slowly we are cleaning the land and building our dream off-grid homestead from the ground up. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home. Want to see more updates? Don't forget to subscribe!

Always I look at things from a different perspective. I first watched this video with my crusty old man eyes, not seeing anything but the wrong things that you are doing (to me as a mechanic/ electrician/person that has cleared much land in the past) I did watch it all the way through, then watched it again. And you know what? As you have grown over the last year, I grew over the last 10 minutes 40 seconds. I first glance I saw hippies that had no clue, then I saw people that were tired of the rat race and wanted to do something different, and even without a huge amount of skills to do this they were motivated enough to learn and do anyway. Bravo for you, I wish you peace, love and much success and thank you for the growth I experienced while watching this video!!! obrigado pelo crescimento que experimentei enquanto assistia este vídeo !!!

I really appreciate your comment Jim, it's a place many of us are coming from, and not many of us are honest enough to admit it. Wonderful to hear your story Lea Maarten and Puck, and I wish you every success. You have made fantastic progress. The raising of the yurt is so graceful! Your photography is great! I only want to add one thing. YOUR BABY NEEDS A HAT. and so do you. you are Dutch, not Portugese, and I have seen the ravages of skin cancer, and I advise you not to store it up for yourselves and your baby.

Our Portuguese Homestead , everything is rocket science, but goats probably would like a warm dry place. Add things in one at a time to give yourself time to learn and adjust. Get a goat expert to help you. Find a vet. Animals are always trying to kill themselves. Plant some olive trees so your grandchildren can harvest them. Sorry if I tell you what to do so much. Just take it slowly and the rest will come

Looks awesome. We bought a plot a year ago in a similar state. I was laid off at the start of Covid19 due to my international management job. The last 4 months have been the best. We've been so busy at the plot that we never get depressed. It's fabulous. We built a bridge over a creek spanning 10 meters, nearly finished building a garden house with a wood fired hot tub. Apart from the hot tub we did all by ourselves from watching wonderful vids like these for tips and inspiration. Many thanks.

We made the same decision 10 years ago, never regretted it. Portugal is so completely different from NL, the climate, the landscape and above all the Portuguese povo. That was for us the reason to settle here instead of Spain. Hope you had good advice when buying the land, because it looks like there could be a lot of Ren or Ran, meaning most of the things you want to do are not allowed. Mid Portugal is not as bad as the Algarve where they are very strict, especially when it comes to the liçenca de habitação. Once you have all that out if the way it is just mind-blowing relaxed to live here. We are completely off grid as well, you learn a lot during the years. Enjoy every step, and do not hesitate to ask and learn from others. Bem vindo

You have got a lovely plot. We remember when we got our first smallholding in Wales, a lot of work, but it was a great place to bring up two young children. Enjoying your channel

Hi, lovely video 😊 me and my partner plan to buy our diamond in the rough next year and follow a very similar lifestyle to yourselves in Portugal (who knows, we may be neighbours one day 😁). My question though is, when you bought your land, was it rustic land and did you get any permission from the camara to live on it first?
@ourportuguesehomestead
@ourportuguesehomestead 4 года назад
Thanks for watching! Hope you find some nice land :) I understand the question, but can’t answer it. We are not legal experts and there are already too many opinions online. I would suggest talking to the Camara of the area you want to buy in to see what is and what isn’t allowed. Hope that helps!

Wonderful. I did the same...some years back...starting with really nothing.. But my soul prize...is my mountain land...that is something else, very spiritual. But l started late due to family problems, however never looked back. You are young and eager. That helps a lot.. Good luck.. Simon on in Spain ... And your right, you sleep with dreams

I really like your adventures. I got into a similar venture in my country Sri Lanka. Big land and started with big spending and finally lost every thing. Went back to my wife's country and started a business and prospered. 10 years ago I returned along and bought a new property of 20 Acres. Living with nature but doing nothing to the land. There is Tea, Pepper and Cinnamon in the land and I am too old now to do any manual work. Yet it is nice living in a jungle all alone. Wife doesn' want to come back.
