Hello Don. Commiserations & congratulations to all the crew for minimising the damage to Tara. Did the luff of the jib tear as it took over the role of the forestay? When I saw how the wire had apparently pulled out the ferrule, I was immediately reminded why Leo chose Dyneema for the standing rigging on Tally Ho: Building TALLY HO's rig - a complex process! Would Dyneema be acceptable for Thames A-Rater class rules? Cordially, Perry
Hello Perry. I haven't been able to give a close look to where the tear is in the jib (I'm not the owner, I just crew for him), but I believe that one of the plastic battens got forced out of its pocket and stabbed a hole in the sail. I'm not sure if Dyneema is allowed under class rules, but I will mention it to the owner, he was saying that he's going to get a stronger forestay for next year's 3RR!
Great story. If you need a more sturdy boat next time we would be happy to lend you one of our mk2 wayfarers !! ha. Our Sea Scout crew managed to get back to Horning by a combination of sailing, capsizing and heroic bailing.
Haha, every year we've done it, it's been pretty good winds, and it always suits the Wayfarers whilst we're a bit overpowered. I'd be tempted to try it in one, but I know if I did, we'd have light winds and I'd be longing for the tall rig of a Rater! Well done to your Sea Scouts for finishing. 👍

I'm glad you shared it with me! :) Oh, and we never even got to the really narrow bridge in the race! The tidal flow through that is pretty intense!
