(Reuploaded with 24,000 views) This is the best quality version currently available online...plus it's in stereo...I had to upload...and in this way I am presenting this excellent band as one should...so put on some headphones and enjoy this moment in our pasts. It was a long, long, time ago, in a galaxy far away, when these people released their second single. This video had to go out to the masses and it captures a moment in history of this way-under-appreciated musical entity. And now the Cs are amassing a near-fanatic following...with the faithful acknowledging the passing of two of the geniuses of the band, Bill and Barry, and are cheering the successes of Susan and continuing to appreciate the talents of Bob, John and Paul. The legend lives on...and this video is just a snapshot of it.

This video is a fascinating artifact from the late 1960s when pop music was at its best. The helicopter shot at the end showing the two dogs frollicking with the family is a nice touch. This is from the era when pop music was at its finest, and The Cowsills were both a real family and a real band! Ah, sweet memories!

I never quite understood about the labels, if they are good songs they are good songs. I've had so many people who have told me "this is a country song", "this is a pop song", "this is a rock song", "this a metal song". The last one was the most surprised about. I was singing along with "War Pigs" and my husband told me that was Black Sabbath and the they were heavy metal. I never cared. If I liked it, I liked it.

Who said music videos got their start in the 70's? One look at videos by the Beatles and the extraordinarily talented Cowsills and it's obvious these two great bands were genuine pioneers in the production of music video clips!!!
@GypsyFairy85
@GypsyFairy85 9 лет назад
Joe Comer You need to go back further. The soundies of the 30's and 40's.
@joecomer8275
@joecomer8275 9 лет назад
***** The soundies were not rock/pop like the music videos of the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and so on. Also, they were not videos in that they were shot for showing in movie theatres not in a VIDEO medium such as television!! The Cowsills clip was meant to be shown on television shows like American Bandstand. Just as the later music videos were meant to be shown on MTV and other such BROADCAST medium.
@GypsyFairy85
@GypsyFairy85 9 лет назад
Of course soundies included popular music of the day, so its really the same thing don't you think?
@joecomer8275
@joecomer8275 9 лет назад
+GypsyFairy85 Soundies certainly were short clips that were available to be seen by some of the public. And they did include popular music of the day, but so did many of the feature presentations, also shown in those theatres. No, I don't think it's exactly the same thing. Not all theatres showed soundies. But from the 50's on very few houses were without televisions. Once artists learned how to use the broadcast medium reaching many more people than a showing at a movie theatre might have, it became a whole new ball game. That is when the true birth of the music video happened. Folks like the Cowsills and the Beatles were among the first to promote songs in such a commercial and extensive fashion. In fact, I think it's safe to say that once the 70's and 80's arrived, a music VIDEO shown on a network like MTV soon became the ONLY way to promote each individual tune. Not necessarily true of the soundies. They were certainly not the main way to promote them. Radio served as important, if not more so, an opportunity to get a song heard during the 30's and 40's. You might even say that soundies were just as much a part of a program at many movie theatres as the cartoons and the feature being presented. They really were as much an entertainment feature as they were a commercial. Keep in mind that theatres were the only way for many people of the day to actually SEE their favorite artists as well as hear them. Because of the somewhat limited availability of them, they didn't always have that opportunity then. Of course you did have those few recording artists that managed to do well in the film industry but they were exceptions to the rule. Fast forward to the 50's and beyond, when television and later video was so important to the sales of a song and those opportunities increased twofold. There was the occasional concert, a guest appearance on a variety show, perhaps a music special all opportunities for an artist to be seen. But yet, and, some would argue about this, it was those short music videos broadcast nationally that really sold an individual recording. Certainly that had to be at least partially the inspiration for MTV. Why not have a network that does nothing BUT promote each individual record with a video per song? And reach far more people than ever before. Than there is the style the clips are presented. Soundies were mainly the songs presented in a much more straight-forward concert like way. When videos first started to catch on in the 80's there was much more that was involved. Sets, locations, costumes and most importantly editing played an important part. It's safe to say that the way a video clip used the craft of editing alone, could make or break the chance for a song to become a hit. While that technique was hardly mastered in the 60's, again bands like the Beatles and the Cowsills can now be looked upon as being among the first to create short films in the same way.

Joe Comer I believe this was shown on "Happening '68", a show that aired after "The New American Bandstand 1968" on Saturday afternoons on ABC-TV. I know it's from "Happening" because of the Dick Clark productions logo at the lower right of the screen. Also, I saw the same clip, but in black and white. On another note, "Happening" was hosted by Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Bill Cowsill did the arrangement. Maybe Bill wasn't Brian Wilson or Jeff Lynne, but he was talented and had the personal character and integrity to meet the problems of his dad's mistreatment of his family and pay off the taxes on money his dad never let them see or benefit from.

Dubious decision to put Mom and Susan in what was to be a rock n' roll band, but Susan Cowsill was so damned cute, you couldn't help but watch her. She could have easily been a child star on her own. Too bad she was one decade too early for ANNIE on Broadway...she would have been a natural.

@Azishome 7 лет назад
+BettinaBalser, I agree that putting Mom Cowsill and Susan in a rock band was a poor decision, but neither of them had a hand in making it. If you ever see the documentary, Family Band, on the Cowsills, you will find that Bud Cowsill, the head of the Cowsill family, was not a very nice man. He did some horrid things. But it was essentially he who called the casting shots. One of the sons, I forget which one, ended up in Vietnam because of Bud's heartless and unappealable decision that the brother didn't have talent--though the public version is that he wasn't interested in music. The Cowsill kids and mom lived in virtual hell due to the philandering and apparent mismanagement of the $20-million fortune the group earned in 1970s dollars. The kids never saw any of the money but ended up paying back taxes and penalties for years. Very sad for such a great group of kids and their Mom.

How about reproducing this compilation by superimposing the audio so as to "sync" it up within those short segments of this clip that show the group singing? So, in other words, either shorten them, or cut them and then reinsert them back in this clip, synchronized. But anyway, thanks.

I saw an interview with the cowsills on saying that the cowsills dad was always propositioning them and trying to get them to do the dirty with him that was sad to hear. What kind of guy propositions his wife's sister....mama mia
