It’s weird- I’m 64 now and just saw the Cowsills at the Woodstock fair in Connecticut last week. Susan was pretty funny. She’s 59 and looks great! They still sound amazing! I have to admit I was more into the Beatles and The Beach Boys at the time but now I appreciate their music! They joked on stage how they were going to get through an hour of music when they only had 4 hits. Then one of them said “by singing other people’s hits”. They were all Hilarious throughout the show. Nice family fun!
I remember them on a talk show with so called tough guy Mickey Spillane...( It might have been Virginia Graham)... Spillane ran his mouth about rotten no good mother's who let their kids have ling hair... One of the older brothers jumped up to give him a beat down...yelling at him for speaking bad of his mother..he had to be held back ...I was in awe!! I was bullied and beaten at home so to me he worthy of idol worship!!! What a cool loyal loving guy...I saw the documentary sometime back..I hate what their old man did!
@@mmvvmm Just a great guy having his mother's back and not tolerating disrespect...there were no punches thrown .. just teenage anger and rightly so ...I was abused so this was refreshing for me then
@@tats5880, If by “they” you mean the Vietnamese people then you are correct; otherwise, whoever “they” is wouldn’t let the French win after 30 years of war either. As the Vietnamese say, the American war in Vietnam was the U.S.’s longest war (at least until Afghanistan), but it was Vietnam’s shortest. Perhaps a war of attrition by a foreign power on someone else’s native soil in their bid for self-determination and independence in which they will never concede defeat is simply unwinnable.
Susan is TOPS! She performs as if she'd been around many years. Back then due to time constraints, a singer(s) would sometimes be asked to shorten a song. This may have happened here. Makes it harder when you only practice for it. Also, the date of this show was Aug. 25, 1970.
@@stephenstone8480 there are many, many times more 'real' musicians now then there were in the 1960s. Just because you don't like the music they play doesn't make them not 'real musicians'.
I think Susan had her own style of singing, and performing. It was cool how she was allowed to do so many solos at a young age. This was truly a family thing. They all were so talented.
I used to crack on the Cowsills when I was a kid. It wasn't my sort of music, but as a grown-up musician I have to appreciate the raw talent they all had and admire their fortitude in the face of the struggles they endured as a family. Saw the Family Band movie last month and my heart broke retrospectively for all of them.
@@cathsalazar9930 'Family Band: The Cowsills Story' is the title. I just read a _Variety_ review. I'll watch it if I can find it on a library dvd or can find it free online. Thank you.
A very underrated group. Their harmonies were great. I can remember a time in my life, when I would have been embarrassed to admit I liked this stuff, in front of my peers. I was more of an acid rock kind of guy, back in the day. But as I've gotten older, I have to admit, I didn't do myself any favors by turning my nose up at this music. I enjoy intricate harmonies. Hell, I love The Andrews Sisters, and more recent (but still a decade old), The Puppini Sisters. You Tube their Jilted Again video, and be pleasantly surprised and thoroughly entertained.
+littleol me I'm with you on almost every sentiment you have said here. I am 56 and fell in love with the Andrews Sisters while watching "Buck Privates" on the Saturday morning oldies channel. As for Susan, she and I are the same age and I had a killer crush on her. Still do.
PoppaBlue59 Yes, Susan was a little cutie back in the day. Of course I didn't realize it at the time, as I was 6 years older than she was and never seen any of the performances until the advent of the internet. But I did listen to a couple of their songs and loved them. Indian Lake, and The Wind the Rain and Other Things.Oh, I can't forget Hair. Susan is much older now, of course, but I still like her. And about the Andrews Sisters, I believe I discovered them the same way you did. They were from Minneapolis, if I'm not mistaken. My home town.
We love you Susan and the Cowsills! Bad audio here, but still great! Love when she goes over to the other guests, too cute! This amazes me even more knowing the horrific conditions you grew up with, apparently a truly disgusting and abusive father. I don't know how you survived it, but you all did, America loves you!
Thanks for this priceless upload, a true treasure from the vaults of time. Susan was amazing, as always. This is an interesting opportunity to see what they looked like when they dumped Mom for a day. It's too bad they weren't able to go on from this on their own, now that they were older, and make albums with this lineup, with Susan as lead singer. It would have been interesting.
Wow when I turned 64 last year I never dreamed I would hear that song they did it great great memories growing up I had a cowsills record remember those
Yes, Agreed. I’m 69 now and as a kid listening to the Beatles sing it I thought turning 64 was in another life , now watching Susan sing it brings back wonderful memories growing up in the 60’s and 70’s.
I love how Mike Douglas mouths the words "I love you" to Susan when she goes jaunting over to him and grabs his hand while staring right into his eyes. His reaction is priceless.
How friggin adorable. Lots of comments saying how bad it was-I'd like to see the people saying that to get on stage,on live tv,at that age,& do half as good.
The look on Mel Tormes face when Susan goes over to them is just priceless. Other than forgetting about where the lyrics went, she just killed it. Great performance!
This reminds me of my nan, as a kid, me & my brother visited her every weekend and wed just listen to old songs all night, just me, my brother, my nan & my great nan, such beautiful memories, love this song ♡
Lol, i hear ya. Susan is a good friend and is one of the best singers I’ve ever heard. Her voice is powerful, precise, soulful, nuanced, gorgeous, and still gives me goosebumps.
You obviously didn't see Michael Jackson Foster sylvers Donny osmond Frankie lymon Stevie wonder Ralph tresvant Leif Garrett All had confidence and swag as kids
I love this performance, Lord knows they would have had 20-30 more hits with a real manager. Water under the bridge. The Cowsills were and are and always will be totally Groovy. May God bless you Susan and your whole family.
I turn 64 tomorrow. I saw this on TV when I was 10 years old, and fell in love with Susan. I intend to make a fool out of myself tomorrow and sing this song at work.
I recently found out the truth about the Cowsills. Apparently by all accounts the father was a horrendiously abusive alchoholic. The family survived and performed despite this. Thank you Cowsills!!!
This great Cowsills came from my neck of the woods New england saw most of their performances on tv in the sixties and listened over the radio they just don't make music like this anymore.
Susan had a decent voice but she was or is a fantastic dancer, you can help but watch her, she had a ton of energy.....Way to go Susan, Im still a fan!!!!
Susan would be around the age of 11 during this interview and performance. To this present day she’s as cute as she can be. A wonderful sister to her talented Cowsill brothers, a wonderful wife and mother.
Well well well Susan guess what? You made it! Hope you read this because I'd like to be a little bit early to wish you a Happy (3X) Birthday coming up. I'd love for you to film a remake of this video. 🙂 Mine is a week after yours. XXOO
Susan, and the guys still performing, still looks and sounds great. She has amazing charisma. Anyone remotely interested should check out their new album “Rhythm of the World.” Some great, and different, songs there that they wrote, with plenty of their hallmark harmonies and melodies.
Never heard of them thanks to RU-vid I found them. It popped on my RU-vid page wit Susan singing with Dean Martin. Need to check them out Now. Susan was just couple years Younger then I am. Thanks RU-vid
I do covers of a few Beatles songs, guitar and vocals. Of course, I don't sound like the original, although I like to fantasize I'm John Lennon up there! Yeah, right. I do Blackbird, Cry Baby Cry, Imagine, You Can't do That, Till There was You. And I don't find them really any harder than many of the other things I cover. Like Tull, and ELP, Moody Blues.
lemurian chick I think the distorted rough sound was because of the poor audio or something, but not because of Susan`s voice, as she has a far much smoother voice than this and maybe even it was made to sound that way hmm?? (beatles) abstract ?sort of sound ,I da no
selleck2u She clearly had charisma, didn't she?. I am surprised she didn't ride that teeybopper wave into the '70s. She reminds me of Kristy McNichol with her cute tomboyishness...
If she didn't love the song and/or the way her voice was changing, she sure fooled me. Maybe we gotta get down to NOLA and ask her ourselves. She's still rocking, God Bless Her.
