And here we are. I hope you guys enjoyed the series! This game was soooo fun! Thank you guys so much for your constant support and patience💜 ARTHUR AND JOHN THE FCKIN GOATS🥲
He also warned John at the end by saying “our time has passed John” basically saying to him that he’s gonna be the next monster that they’re gonna go after
that what makes it sad as bad as dutch became he atleast tried to warn john that in the end they were gonna come for him but atleast in a away the kid of the gang was the one to kill the main asshole ross gotta give rockstar props how they made it all connect in the end
I remember reading the strategy guide for this game. When it got to John's last stand, the guide just said, "You can't change what happens next. But you can try."
Arthur told him to run and don’t look back, John going for Micah was doing the exact thing that Arthur told him not to do and caused Ross and Archer to find him and John’s entire family paid the price for it. And Jack Marston becomes the very thing that everyone tried so hard to keep him from becoming an OUTLAW. Revenge is a fools game - Arthur Morgan Edit: To anyone that reads through the comment strings ignore that argument at the bottom that whole thing just goes off topic.
5:23 The STOP thing was actually a part of how people sent telegrams. Back then it costed extra to send punctuation so people would just literally type out STOP instead.
@@plexyglass429 well if we lived in the old times and wanted to save on money to even send the damn letter to where it's supposed to go when we already paid for it to be shipped off in the first place then I would put STOP instead of .
@@plexyglass429 it’s not about ink. Telegrams were transmitted using Morse code, and there were only fully standardized codes for the 26 letters. So sending actual punctuation was more complicated and costed more in labor.
My favorite Easter egg in this game is when the Strange Man leaves John. "This is a fine spot. See you around, Cowboy." He's not referring to his house looking nice. He's talking about where his family will be buried. But my favorite detail on top of that is in the beginning of the story, Ross meets Jack by the river. By the end, Jack meets Ross by the river. What a story.
Watch the last 30 seconds of the video lmao, he KINDA got it, but he thought the strange man was talking about the barn that john actually died in front of
What cannot be understated is the shock and awe this ending stirred up when it was first released. At the time, no major game studio had the balls to kill off their main character in such a shocking and brutal way. It was such an important first for a game as massive as this. I remember I was 12 when the game first came out and I played through the entire game in a single weekend because I was so captivated by the story and world. The ending hit me like a 100 ton boulder and from that moment forward it was my favorite game ever... Until RDR2 came out. Rockstar somehow surpassed their gold standard expectations with a game that exceeded everyone's imagination. These games mean so much to myself and many others, and I'm glad you got to experience it as well, Jett.
John sacrificed himself in the end, he could’ve ran but knew it was no use…his family were in danger as long as he was alive. He went from being a deadbeat father to dying for his family to live. True redemption.
Just to say, when being a deadbeat, it's that he cared about them enough to not want to be a father and husband. John had a very low opinion bout himself, didn't want jack to have a killer father, depressed, sometimes drunk ( i like the parallele between john's father and john, his father was a drunk violent man who got blind at one point and later died in a fight, john was depressive, drunk, a violent outlaw, was near to get blind after the wolf attack...). So to say, with camp events since chap2, john and abigail talk and john says bad things about himself, that abigail should find someone else, later that he's going to try to be a descent father and husband because he loves abigail. In chap2, at an event, john looks at what jack is doing so cares about him a little, even john mourning that arthur fish with jack shows that john wanted to do it, needed time to have the motivation John is struggling and depressive, is sure to be an aweful father and husband so rather not be at all for abigail and jack's sake
@@linesandcircles7465I’d like to think it’s a dream/nightmare John had while being back home on the ranch one night haha. I’m pretty sure that’s what it’s actually supposed to be. I guess you could call it a canon dream? Lol
@@RiotnRespect that would work, except they should have ended the story with John waking up to reveal that it was a dream, instead of ending it in free roam as zombie
@@murch604no it didn't. What evidence or anything did they have to even think John killed Micah. They would think Dutch killed Micah. Because he was there to set up Dutch
Arthur quotes Dutch's "revenge is a luxury we cant afford". And Dutch ignores his own advise. So instead of quietly going back east, they go after Colm and end up robbing the Leveticus train which kick starts their doom.
John was going to be find anyways, without going to micah, he was actively hunted, a federal bureau build in blackwater to eradicate outlaws in the west... People don't forget, nothing gets forgiven But rockstzr were dumb to make john being revengeful just to make arthur shines more
Did Jack wait until his mother died to become an outlaw? Just to not worry her and give her the heartbreak of seeing him become like John? Wow... This game...
in the second game, little Jack says he wants to be a gunslinger and Abigail says “over my dead body” Flash forward 15 years and he does exactly that, becomes a gunslinger over his mother’s dead body
There is a theory that Jack, after getting his revenge on Ross, did go on to become a writer. The evidence of this comes from one of the GTA games were there's a book titled Red Dead and it says it was written by J. Marston. Again, this is only a theory but one that I liked to believe is true because it means that Jack did in fact brake the cycle and went on to possibly live a normal life.
My personal theory that I like is that Jack is the author, but lives in the GTA universe. This is why the book is there. The RDR universe, at least to some extent, is the fictionalized universe of Jack’s book. This is why the gta and rdr universes have different areas fictionalized and real (ie New York exist in RDR, but in GTA it’s Liberty City).
GTA and RDR don't share the same universe. The states in RDR are not the same states in GTA. They literally refer to New York as New York instead of Liberty City
Thats just an easter egg. Its confirmed GTA and RDR are different universes. It also undermines the poeticness of the ending, where Jack becomes the very the John died hoping he wouldn't be. Its a comfortable ending but not a good one.
The first game I EVER cried at. I was so incredibly heartbroken at John’s death when I played this game at launch, when I was just 11 years old. Even now, 25 years old, it just hits so hard for me. There’s a shot in RDR2 epilogue that has John walk through those same barn doors and it directly mirrors the shot in RDR1.
Also in theory after this Jack finishes his dad works while soon after settle down depressed but became a writer and has his own family but hey that a theory a game theory
Arthur said that to John before they even got to the ridge. His last words to John were “I know, I know” and before that he said “Get the hell out of here and be a god damn man” 😂
I said it once I'll say it again: The entire reason why Arthur told John to never look back was because of exactly what happened that you see. The government wanted Dutch all along, not Marston. That's why the Reverend and the chicks got away clean because the government didn't care for them as much as they didn't care for John, Sadie, Charles, Uncle, etc. When John killed Micah, the government lost their only mole on Dutch's whereabouts. John led the government right to his doorstep and ultimately, his fate. Beautiful franchise, I hope to see a RDR 3 one day. Thank you for this adventure, Jett. Take care.
Perfect callbacks to RDR2 with Edgar Ross' death. Ross intimidates Arthur and Jack while by the river and then dies to Jack while he's by the river 15 years later.
When RDR2 was announced and John wasn't the main character, I was deeply disappointed because all I wanted to do was play as my favorite main character in video game history again. It's like the feeling when you are forced to play as Jack at the end of this game; there's a sort of emptiness and lack of motivation to play because you've so deeply connected to John through the whole game. I think a lot of people like me who played RDR before RDR2 felt similarly. I was disappointed with Arthur being the main character, but I also trusted R* to create another excellent character. And in a sort of surreal turn of events, by the end of RDR2 when I was then forced to play as John, my favorite MC in video game history, I felt those same feelings of emptiness and lack of motivation. Really made me appreciate both games and both characters more having experienced both stories.
*Revenge is an idiot’s game* John avenging big bro Arthur is what sealed his fate back in RDR2’s epilogue. Micah was the Pinkerton’s link to finding Dutch & the rest. Once John killed Micah, Ross & the rest tracked him down to Beecher’s Hope, kidnapped his family so that he would be their unwilling errand boy, then killed him once he served his purpose. Arthur told him to go and not look back. But John couldn’t. *You’re my brother*
Worst part of it is that even if Micah had been left alive, there's a good chance they would've found John eventually and sent him to do what Ross eventually did. "People don't forget. Nothing gets forgiven"
John's Marston death was foreshadowed a few times through the story. I know that one - the final Strange Man encounter - he says that this is a good spot. I think I remember someone in the comments mentioned to "remember that spot", I think the person meant that John's and Abigail's grave were going to be there. The Strange Man is some sort of entity that represents Death and he knows that John's death was coming. Another foreshadowing was when Agent Ross told John Marston that he will earn a medal on his chest, there's two ways to interpet that: an actual medal of achievement. Or a bullet in the chest since it is made of metal, too.
"People don’t forget, nothing gets forgiven" is probably the earliest foreshadow for the game’s ending. I’m definitely convinced John knew he wasn’t going to live but held on to a a little twinge of hope that things would go differently.
Im so fucking glad nobody spoiled the end and Jett got to experience it first hand..........evn do he himself was talking about "what if he died" and "John better not die".
I got spoiled of John's death by my fckn history teacher who knew I loved RDR2 and hadn't played RDR1 because I don't have any consoles. I got spoiled of Dutch's death immediately after finishing the first game. Came up in youtube recommended after I'd been watching video essays of RDR2. I wasn't spoiled about Bill or Javier though. I was spoiled Bill was in the game but he is literally a part of the trailer anyways.
@@Jarjar2270 I commented under a 36 likes comment. You are a sad sad Jarjar. I wonder who did this to you to the point you don't trust anyone. The fact you're being so antagonisitc tells me you use twitter regularly.
"The Other Promise" at 57:24 fits Jack's character perfectly. As the song from Kingdom Hearts being the battle theme for Roxas symbolise the fight for identity that both characters have lost throughout both games and both being a shadow of their "original selves" which being Sora in Roxas case and John Marston for Jack Marston. As Jack refers to himself as "John Marston Jr." Through battle quotes and everyone refers Roxas as Sora's nobody. Sorry for my rant it was a cool parallel as Jack Marston and Roxas are one of the most tragic gaming characters I know.
When John shot the strange man last episode, he shot him three times and it malfunctioned at the fourth time. So it basically foreshadows the death of uncle, john and abigail. The malfunction symbolizes jack being the only survivor Also jack meets agent ross at a river in rdr2 and his final moment in this game is at a river too
There’s an underlining theme, or moral of the RDR series and it’s that revenge is a fool’s game, and what you do will never simply disappear. Arthur told John that he needed to run away from it, to step out of the darkness with hurry and run as fast as he could, to never remember nor look back on what he had, or what he was doing. John failed that. He doomed himself and his family the moment he indulged the darkness he was running from and unsheathed it for what? Revenge. It cost him everything in the end, and by continuing the cycle he doomed Jack to live the very same way. Did you notice that when Jack kills Ross, he looks at his gun for a moment? Almost as if he looks at it and is going to throw it away.. But he doesn’t, because he knows he’s going to use it again, as if he *wants* to use it again. And by that alone, he is going to take revenge on the world, on the people that took from him, he’s going to indulge that very same darkness and by doing so he’s going to doom himself to the very same fate his father, and that Arthur before him had. Because revenge is a fool’s game.
Jack tragically becomes that man, that everyone in RDR2 tried to avoid. Even tho the end is really tragic, it hits you and remember every good moment you had in RDR1 and RDR2. So in the end Jack avenged every character from these 2 amazing Games.
@@skycloud5695 I thought it was more so to highlight the death of the wild west and outlaws as a whole since industrialization was a major theme throughout the game, tho your interpretation could be true. But objectively John was a terrible person that killed hundreds of people and helped both sides commit warcrimes in the Mexican civil war, if he can get to heaven I think Ted Bundy will have a good shot
@@Qwertyuiopaz Maybe there's some wiggle room though? John killed a lot of people in the end, and did a lot of bad things, for his family and protecting the innocient. Consider God apperantly was really big on crusades back in the day, leading the faithful to strike down and kill those he considered the 'bad guys', that might mean John equally gets a pass. This is coming from someone who isn't religious in the slightest. Just my 2 cents
Rockstar missed a chance here for a multiple ending type deal as in GTA IV. Like if you brought in both Bill and Javier alive, Ross would leave John alone, but if you kill one then John's dead to meet the quota. If it had been like that, Jettro would have gotten all the smoke from us, bro didn't even let Bill finish his last lines. 😂
Bro had the exact same reaction I had as a kid playing this game. Rage followed by tears lol. John Marston will forever be my favorite protagonist ever. RDR is still a masterpiece too.
The thing is, since rdr2 the gang wanted to sort of protect Jack from the life they all lived. Like Arthur who helped John to escape. Arthur said to John to run and don’t look back but John went against Arthur’s wishes by killing Micah for revenge. Jack also shared in this path of vengeance by going after Ross and becoming the one thing John and Abigail didn’t want Jack becoming. It makes me wonder if Rdr3 would involve Jack and the federal government for the fact that he killed Ross but let’s hope not.
Thank you for finishing this game jettro!! I would like u to keep in mind that killing him in this game was way before they had planned to show his past in red dead 2 which kinda makes this death way sadder for u now than when I played Cuz i Played 1 first instead of 2 but looking firward to the next playthrough as always much love from Scotland!!!🫸🫷
What makes John's death worse in my opinion is that he was screwed over AND he thought he got out. With Aruthur, he made peace with his coming death and with John's escape there was a degree of closure in that for him. John didn't get that.
Well Jett, if you want to, you can play the undead nightmare dlc for this game. It’s good, and unintentionally one of the best pieces of zombie media ever made in the history of gaming (in my opinion). Thanks again Jett for giving us this playthrough.
Jet you are one of my favourite youtubers thaks so much for this GOATed series...can't wait for the next game but take your time and don't burn yourself out xxxx
John could've absolutely singlehandedly beat the Pinkerton's assault on his home. But to him - it was him they wanted - so he figured the only way that Jack and Abigail could truly be free is if he sacrificed himself. ALSO, remember how I said to remember The Strange Man saying to John "This is a lovely spot."? It's where John gets buried after his death. And remember when John shot 3 times at The Strange Man before his gun jammed? It was signifying the deaths of John, Abigail, and Uncle. The fourth shot jamming was Jack being spared.
I think Jack did become a writer/author If the red dead and gta universe is connected there is a book in Franklins house in gta 5 called red dead redemption by j marston so he didn’t fully commit to being an outlaw it was purely just to avenge his family
1:07:24 Good to see you notice that detail The last place you see the strange man (possibly Death personified) is in the same spot John was buried. And even more, the last thing John did to the strange man was shooting him three times, the same number of graves at the end. One for Uncle, the other one for Abigail, and the last one for himself
I'm glad you loved this series as much as we loved watching it! If you listen carefully, the lyrics of the song in the credits (Deadman's Gun) kinda talks about Jack's life and how his "hand's upon a dead man's gun." Also, I don't know if you noticed but Jack shot Ross with the same gun that he gave John in that one mission. Just a fine detail. Thank you for everything and have a wonderful rest of your day!
I knew when Jettro said on Ep 1 "John better not die in this game" that Jettro would have to make his words soft & sweet, because he would have to eat 'em lol. Jettro, as a nigga that saw you cry to tears in 4 GAMES in a row, I AM happy that I found your channel. Your passion & emotion CARRIES The gameplays. I found this Channel right after I finished RDR2. I am Jettro sqaud until my last breathe.
Also if they do a remake of this game they will have to do some big story changes to fit in the events of rdr2. Because there isn’t one mention of either Sadie, Charles and SPECIALLY Arthur
I have to give the community some applause. We had this man play through RDR2and RDR1 and no one spoiled it for him. No one spoiled Uncle, no one spoiled Jack's outcome, no one spoiled Abigail or where they ended up buried or the Strange Man. Applause.
the Strange Man or Death was standing on the spot overlooking the barn where John and Abigail’s graves are. Also the same spot John and Abigail are standing after you beat RDR2. 🤯
Hey Jett, idk if anyone’s mentioned this but even though Jack’s ending is very bittersweet because of revenge and the “outlaw legacy,” there are references which point to him leaving outlawing and becoming a writer. With RDR and GTA5 being created by rockstar, there’s evidence which suggests they exist in the same universe. In one of the storyline’s characters’ houses theres a book collection with multiple different parody / serious books in usual rockstar fashion. But one of these is titled “Red Dead” by J. Marston. The ‘J.’ Is ambiguous because it could be Jack or John, but judging by the fact that John is remarked as practically illiterate (especially in this game which released before GTA5 and the journal in RDR2 wasn’t implemented until after this Easter egg), this def suggests that Jack ultimately became a writer in the end. I imagine this is him retelling his entire life story, under the guise of it being a western like the ones he loved to read. That or an actual autobiography. It’s super fitting, and adds a bit more happiness to a very VERY sour ending but it’s one of my favorite facts ever and I hope you see this to find out about it.
What’s weird was there was more backlash over playing John in the epilogue which was just weird to me as someone who played RDR first before RDR2, so it was weird people loving John then suddenly trashing him like he was some new character that was unlikable. I love both Arthur and John equally.
when John shoots the strange man he only does it 3 times because the gun jams on his fourth bullet. None of the bullets hit the strange man, but those three bullets represent John, Abigail, and Uncle. The fourth bullet is Jack, he was the only one to live and the worst thing is where they bury John and the rest is in that exact place. And at the end of RDR2 John and Abigail talk about the future in the place where they are going to be buried... Flashbacks of RDR2: Jack kid: when i grow up i want to be a Gunslinger....😊😊😊 Abigail: Over my dead body.... RDR 1....
Like the TLOU series, the RDR series is also sad. Arthur sacrificed himself knowing that he would die from TB to save John and John sacrificed himself to save his family and Jack grown up becoming the very thing that John and Abigail didn't want him to be, an outlaw. Most likely that after Ross's murder, the feds might send someone after Jack. Someone worse than Ross and Milton. If you asked me who is worse between Milton or Ross then I would say Ross. Milton may have been a cold-blooded killer but at least he was honest. When he said he going to do something he does it, like when he promised that he would kill Dutch and the gang and he killed Hossa. Ross on the other hand is not only a cold-blooded killer but he also dishonest. Kidnapping John's family and promising him to leave him and his family be if he hunt down and kill his former gang members only to kill him at the end of it. What Dutch said "they just find another monster", in a way he was warning John that this was going to happen, today Dutch is the monster and tomorrow, John is the monster. Pretty sure that the only reason Ross wanted John to kill Dutch was to give his supervisors a reason to go after John. So... yeah, in my opinion, Ross is worse than Milton and it's a good thing that Jack took him out to avenge John.
I wouldn’t blame Ross really? When agent Milton was giving them chance after chance they kept robbing and killing and Ross was there. Him being so soft with the gang got him killed
Thank you, Jett. I started playing RDR when as a fan of your content saw you start your RDR2 Experience. I stopped watching shortly to experience it also before enjoying your playthrough. I too played the Red Redemption story in chronological order rather that 1 into 2. At the end of it all, I said out loud, "playing chronologically may be more heartbreaking with all the context". What Rockstar did with RDR is quite an accomplishment. RDR1 Still holds up 14 years later, and seeing I am amoung many who were impacted by the storytelling and gameplay added something to it all. John and Arthur are perma-GOAT'S
No leads. Assuming Jack kept his wife and brother alive, they didn't know who Jack was or who he was related to; granted, if they found out that he killed Ross.
RDR2 (1899) Ross: "Enjoy your fishing kid, while you still can". First Meeting of Jack and Ross at the River. RDR1 (1914) Last Meeting of Jack and Ross also at the River. He indeed enjoyed his Fishing.
