Not to take away from her achievement, but little kids are able to hang a lot longer. In videos where trained adults try to out hang children they always lose. A skinny child who trains grip should be able to hold for 7-10 min (watch other hang challenge videos). This is because strength does not even scale to weight. The best pound for pound lifters are always small for a reason. A 4x body weight deadlift is physically impossible for a 400 pound strongman.

At some point humanity acquired a mutation which nerfs out muscle strength, probably to reduce caloric needs to survive two ice ages. A silverback gorilla, for example, can lift ten times its own body weight over its head without straining. In a small number of human beings, this mutation is switched off in a condition called muscular hypertrophy, making them as strong as human beings are _supposed_ to be. Children with the condition have massively muscular physiques without effort, and usually grow up to become famous, record-breaking athletes. Muscular hypertrophy takes two forms. The first form involves more muscles fibres per square centimetre, making the muscles much stronger than is normally humanly possible. The second form, however, involves the muscles storing much more ATP and processing it much more efficiently, so rather than having large, bulky muscles, the person has incredible endurance, able to do things like run marathons or -- as in this case -- hang by the arms for literally inhuman lengths of time.

@@enabler2456 Being tropical, I imagine they had an easier time of it. We know from studies on the human genome that at one point during the last ice age, humanity was reduced to less than 5000 individuals, which is probably why the gene responsible for nerfing our muscles and reducing our caloric needs became universal, as those without it died.
@DJ-ru4im
@DJ-ru4im Год назад
@@NoJusticeNoPeace it has actually been proven that old conceptions of ape strength is incorrect. Chimpanzee muscle power output is approximately 1.35x higher. Due to their smaller size, larger humans actually stronger than chimpanzees. Chimpanzees higher output is largely due to their muscles being composed of a higher proportion of fast-twitch muscle (used for lifting and anaerobic efforts) at the expense of slow-twitch muscle which humans evolved because that's how we hunted prey. Humans can outrun any animal on the planet, and that is how some African tribes still hunt. All humans have variations in the proportion of fast and slow twitch muscle which is why some are genetically predisposed to marathons or lifting. Your gorilla statistic (lifting 10 times their bodyweight over their head) is complete nonsense. Finally, myostatin related muscular hypertrophy genetic disorder has nothing to do with chimpanzees or previous versions of human genetic code

@sailingintosunshine

@@HiImBQ it is really interesting how exercise selection can massively influence such results depending on body type. This becomes expecially clear, when you pair a tall and a short person (of similar body composition) and compare their performance in amount of pull ups vs energy output on a rowing machine. For pullups, the taller guy will have to lift more weight and do more ROM for each rep, but for rows, the longer ROM actually benefits the energy output, and body weight suddenly has no impact anymore.

When I was 18 and 19 I would do 100 pushups before bed, every night. Now 57 years later, I can do maybe 10. To be able to do 100 again would be a hell of a goal. Knowing my body, probably I'd pull a muscle along the way. But at least, hopefully no heart attacks.

I'm 68, and I hear you. In the 80's I could do one arm pullups and I climbed 11a/b. Now I don't do pull ups ever because I just hurt myself, and I climb 11+12-. The power is GONE. But, we can still have fun.
@jhssuthrnmama

Nah. You can do it. I'm a 47-year-old woman and I know I could do 100 a day, so I know that if you work at it, you can do 10 groups of 10 throughout the course of the day, then work at getting them closer together. Baby steps and perfect form all the time will protect your muscles.

Nice to see some humility from Magnus in the pushups challenge. There isn't a high chance some random people are going to beat him at pullups, or especially hanging, even on the muscle beach edit. Magnus should have to do muscle ups while the competitor does pullups, to make it more even 😄
